So what happened to the fawn?
This is what happens when you don't have enough bird life. Crows and magpies are often chased away by the human populations and they are a huge control factor of ticks. I did notice that where your standing has almost no bird sounds for an area
Actually, tick populations increase when their habitat improves - like all species. The limited prescribed fire in most area has allowed way too much leaf litter to build up. Ticks need a moist habitat and when fire removes the leaf litter ticks dessicate.
Now I feel like I have ticks all over me LOL
Haha I hear ya! -Daniel
I came in from a productive day of scouting this week and pulled 20 something ticks off my ankles and legs that had dug into my socks. I had no idea they were such a big problem out here. But the video was right about one thing: I saw a lot more deer and deer sign in the areas where I picked up lots of ticks.
So what happened to the fawn!!??
what did yall do with the fawn yall dont seem like the guys to leave it for the coyotys
Absolutely fascinating, I stumbled upon this video and watched the entire thing, I grew up in northeast Ohio and I’m sure there were plenty of ticks but as a kid I was allergic to everything so I was unaware. I moved to Southern California in 89 and in 30 years of owning dogs here in the inland empire I’ve seen 3 ticks, and those had to be pointed out to me by a lady sitting next to me in the waiting room at the vets office. She saw them on my newly adopted rescue dog, I hadn’t a clue. I cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like for folks who live in areas with that kind of tick populations. Wow.
Jennifer - It would be nice to not have to worry about ticks! I hope your rescue dog is doing well! Thanks for your heart!
Permeth works great, a few summers ago we were logging during that time I had maybe 4 or 5 ticks. Stuff saves us for sure.
Yes it does! -Daniel
Another great show guys, and what a great way to show the impact of ticks on deer, we are miles and miles away from.you guys in VT, but this year has been horrible for ticks I've had a bunch get on me while at work, luckily the deer I've seen and had on camera don't appear taken over by them yet, we are hoping for the best and hope for the same for you, eliminate ticks!!! Lol
Glad to hear that your deer are clean! -Daniel
I've found that wearing tall boots (like muck boots) & tucking my pants inside them helps...but my ultimate tick prevention is duct tape! I learned how helpful its was, particularly for seed ticks, while in college doing radio telemetry studies. I tape around the top of my boots to seal between them & my pants. Then I tear off a few 6" strips & stick them to my thighs. If I happen to get a batch of seed ticks (the kind that looks like a black ball & then starts to spread making your heart race) I pull a strip off & pat them with the tape...similar to what was done in the test on the video. Captures them all! I also pat myself down with tape before getting back in the truck to go home.
Great tips Cody! -Daniel
If i could a tip from us northern boys. I don't know if you have ever planted alfalfa but up here it is like soybeans. In Canada there are not any forage soybean company's to buy seed from but alfalfa is easy to find. Alfalfa puts on more forage then soybeans and has about the same mineral and protein levels and unlike clover it won't burn up mid summer. One mow and it will stay palatable for a long time and come fall you can drill your blend right into it. With is also being a perennial legume it will fix alot of nitrogen and you will not have to replant it every year.
Crazy.... Awesome video tho and the host reminds ya of your favorite science teacher 😁
❤️🕊️💙
Amy - Ha! I'll take that as a compliment!
Watching this made me itch badly
I can’t imagine a tick population that big! Here in northern IL I find 1-5 ticks a year at most!
We have plenty to share with you :) -Daniel
Like the tips on a new plot processs
Thanks Brian!
Great video!!
Thanks! -Daniel
It has become this way as well in Nova Scotia. When I was a child in the 1990s it wasn't like this at all I hate it.
There's not enough fire to reduce tick habitat!
I didn’t know how grateful I was until tonight I was checking trail cams and saw that there wasn’t any ticks on the back of any of the deer’s ears * I’m in mostly agriculture , flatland area instead of mountains*
That's great! It's always good to see clean deer! -Daniel
Wow that's a lot of ticks! They don't seem to be too out of hand where I live in NW Ohio
That's good!! -Daniel
Did I hear him say the Permethrin stays on for several 'warshes'!?
Yes!
I went boar hunting down in Arkansas and in one i had 11 on me in a 12hr day . 8 another and 5 another. I used off deep woods and that helped tremendously
Ticks are bad this season! Sounds like you found a few in AR. Glad the OFF worked for you! -Daniel
I love this channel
Im From New York and the ticks there's a lot of them as well in 2018 and now this year
Ticks....
I live in northern Ontario. I've seen more ticks than I have before this year. It's October and I've pulled 4 or 5 out of my own body this year and dozens out of my barn cats.
Tick populations are bad in many places. There certainly needs to be more prescribed fire!
Do you guys ever hunt small game on your property and if so do you think it affects the deers pattern
Rae (Grant's daughter) often hunts squirrels on the property. We are out on the property so often that the deer are used to our presences whether working, walking, or small game hunting. -Daniel
Man!! Poor fawn! I've seen more ticks also here in SE Oklahoma. I've barely been able to hunt because of the ticks!! I also got a new 15 ft" tree stand today!
Whew! Ticks are bad this summer. I hope you are taking precautions for ticks while out in the woods. A new stand is exciting! I hope you can get it into a tree soon! Keep us posted on your preseason projects Rylie! -Daniel
I've seen more in 2021 than I've ever seen in my life. It is may 29th and we have picked about 200 off ourselves and our pets
B - Wow! Sounds like that area needs a prescribed fire!
I can't stop touching my head. Sheesh!
Me too!
Ok thank you
We used to have a doe that would come to are house and beg for good
Are you allowed to remove the ticks when you see the deer full of ticks?
Jen - It's illegal and a bad idea to capture wildlife. It is wise to manage the habitat so critters are healthy!
Will you do a video on Japanese beetles and everything you know about them. We have an absolute INFESTATION here in Illinois and they’re gonna wipe out everything it seems
Very sorry to hear that they have been such a problem in your area this summer. We've had a few problems with them here. You may wish to learn more about Japanese beetles here: extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/japanese-beetles -Daniel
Up here in northern Wisconsin I am seeing far less ticks this season... I usually get ticks from standing in the driveway, get a lot of them walking thru the tall grass.... Not so much this year - I have only seen maybe a dozen this year on myself & my dog total !!! Might just be me but, my observation is that i see less ticks in the woods - than in any taller grass / fields...
Fewer ticks is great!!! Glad this summer has had few ticks in your area! -Daniel
Permethrin helps a lot. Spray your clothes, socks, hats, jacket, orange vest, backpack, blind. Let it dry. Then you will find few if any ticks at the end of the day.
I'm blessed to be so high up in the mountains that we don't seem to have ticks or fleas. I have butcher three deer in this location and non had a single tick.
Very lucky to have so few ticks! -Daniel
In Maine the moose have so many they compared it to shingles on a house
The bad long winter we had here in wisconsin not many ticks.
Glad to hear you have few ticks! -Daniel
So you guys just left the fawn like that??? Would have been great to see you remove the ticks
It's illegal to capture wild deer and this is a sad reality. Few are outside enough days during the summer to see such.
It's illegal to capture wild deer and this is a sad reality. Few are outside enough days during the summer to see such.
wow, what a mess that little one had going on. Nature is cruel!!
Life in the woods is a constant fight for survival. -Daniel
Up here in northern Minnesota the tick numbers seem fairly low this year
dustin schaefer same in wisconsin
You are blessed! -Daniel
I've been outside working the woods since basically May 1; I've had 1 tick on my knee. S. WI
Wow
Kris - Ticks can be horrible!
Por favor ayuden a los animalitos gracias
Chispi - We use lots of prescribed fire to reduce tick populations.
Me and amazing dad are going for youth season in November in Vermont got any tips?
P.S. can I get your autograph for my dad?
Andrew,
That sounds like an amazing opportunity for you and your dad! I wish you the best of luck. I would identify the food and bedding in the area you are hunting and figure our how deer are moving to and from those locations. Play the wind and try to enter, hunt, and exit your hunting location without alerting deer. Keep us update on your hunt! -Daniel
Every itch I get now I think it's a tick. Lyme disease is scary to me. I couldnt think of anything worse than an allergy to red meat
Ha! It is important to always check for ticks soon after being outside.
Ok
What you need to do is get some ice Packers and put it from Africa and breed them I'm telling you they'll you'll eat up so many ticks the problem will go down drastically
You lost me on this one.
After watching, feels like I am itching. Duh!
Chris - Ha! It's almost tick season. Be careful when outside! - grant
Was the fawn put down I hope?
Do ticks have a natural predator?
Spi - the way to control any species is by improving or reducing the habitat quality. Without fire, leaf litter builds up and tick populations expand.
Where is this?
In southern, Missouri!
Agree ticks are bad every time I get trail camera pictures of one doe, she has even more on her.
Yuck! -Daniel
Ticks suck I spent 3 days ,two years ago in hallucinations because of limes disease.
Whew! Glad you recovered. That would not be a fun thing to have. -Daniel
Had a family member get Lyme Disease.....she still has lingering effects from it and that was over a decade ago.....
That is crazy! Can't you spray the grass and kill the ticks?
Tennessee Bowhunter A pesticide type of spray! like when they spray crops
You don't want to kill the ticks that way. You'll harm other animals and removing that many ticks would affect other animals in the ecosystem. They should make sure they're not harming or deterring opossums. They're natural tick eaters!
What can be done to reduce the tick count?
Jonathon,
There is little that can be done. Wildlife can not be medicated. There are some feeds on the market that have ingredients like garlic and others that help reduce ticks on deer. However, feeding is not allowed or legal in all areas. -Daniel
Jonathon King Part of the problem is they trap their possums. One possum is estimated to eat 5,000 ticks in a season
What state is the proving grounds located?
The Proving Grounds is in southern Missouri near Branson. -Daniel
GrowingDeer.tv Thanks, im in NC and I haven't seen any ticks much. Of course I haven't been here but 3 weeks out of the summer because I have been in Alaska. I really hope it gets better there, I was grossed out looking at that Fawn and that doe. It's really just sad
It's good to hear that you haven't found many ticks! Yes, ticks can be very bad for deer. I hope you enjoyed Alaska! -Daniel
GrowingDeer.tv, Thanks
My boyfriend comes home from work everyday with 2-3 on him. And I find them all over the place through the house! He does construction and comes in frequent contact of weeds and the woods. I hate them.
Ha!
That really sucks! Maybe try to treat all of his clothes with permethrin and get him to tuck his pants into his socks.
Makes my skin crawl....
Mine too! - grant
How about releasing pray mantis's.
Small areas like gardens may work well! -Daniel
Or chickens, turkeys maybe. and you could hunt if they grow in numbers
Lyme disease and other disease is a problem, much more than a little bite.
Yes - ticks can carry many nasty diseases!
So glad I live safely in the city away from ticks. I do however have to worry about typhus from homeless people lol
I believe I rather fight with ticks than live in a city. That's just my thoughts.
Hello to the Growingdeertv team my name is lane Russell and I have a exotics ranch known as the lucky 7 ranch just outside of Eden Texas I would love to have y’all come down and hunt to help grow our hunting please get back to me
Lane, thank you for the invitation! We have hunted Texas many times, often for deer and hogs. We love hunting both! Sounds like you have a neat ranch. We wish you the best and hope our paths cross soon! -Daniel
Lots of ticks this year
Yes! Unfortunately. -Daniel
scratchiest episode ever lol
HAHAH yes it was!! -Daniel
I have no ticks deer
Wow - Do you hunt in a swampy area, ag country, or where it's very dry?
Why's there so much ticks this year?
Ticks need moisture to survive and are active during warmer temperature. We had several timely spring rains and have had warm humid temps. There is also prime habitat for them in the leaf litter. I'm sure these factors as well as others have resulted in the many ticks at The Proving Grounds this summer. -Daniel
Climate change.
Mid Northern Michigan ticks have been getting worse ea year since 2009.
Now they’re feeding on us. They’ve never done that before, choosing us over the dogs.
Ticks were very bad here this year! -Daniel
@Growingdeer.tv - Have you noticed any direct correlations with the increased tick populations? Some I have been wondering about specifically are increased deer populations, increased clearings and food plots, etc. Have you noticed any correlations in these things? Also since you have started your Buffalo Technique, have you noticed a dramatic increase in ticks? What do you contribute to increase?
The high tick numbers is not limited to our property. This area has always had gad of ticks. Even only a few miles away where deer densities are low and habitat is continuous hardwoods. It is possible, timely spring rains and warm temperature have the most to do with high tick numbers. Ticks need moisture and are active in warmer temperature. The combination of both this spring probably allowed many ticks to survive. -Daniel
Climate change. Monarch butterfly population is down 80%, great increase of ticks, polar bears are struggling for food due to ice melting, ocean rising in temperature & sea levels. Etc.
Food
Do ticks try to kill the deer
No, ticks are not trying to kill deer. They are parasites and need a host to feed. It is not in their interest to kill the host and lose their food supply. But when a great number of ticks find a deer, infection can occur and chances of a tick borne disease multiply. -Daniel
How is it that y’all have nice luscious food plots, but don’t have a hog problem..? I can’t seem to get rid of them every year my plot gets destroyed...
We thankfully, don't have hogs at our farm. They are close. In fact, some of our friends have a farm 30-40 miles from us, have removed several sounders. -Daniel
GrowingDeer.tv thanks for the response I have a hog problem every year, I can’t seem to get rid of them.
Hogs are destructive critters. The best way to effectively manage is to trap. -Daniel
Deer hunting idk which is worse falling out of the tree or getting Lyme's disease for a nasty tasting meat.
i got five ticks walking a half a mile in the brush to get to a pond Bruh i thought it was bad up here
Wow! Those critters are every where this summer! -Daniel
That is a lot of ticks I thought up here in pa getting up to ten on a hunt was bad
I wish that was the case here haha -Daniel
Ticks are one animal that I wished god did not creat
They are not fun! -Daniel
Fisher Barnett Amen to that. They deter me from predator hunting in the off season, they’re ravenous in Georgia.
Sigh.
They are an important source of food for opossums and other animals, and the diseases they spread help control populations.
I put chiggers at the top of my list. At least there are critters that eat ticks...
Lyme Disease, not “Lyme’s Disease”.......
Umbellus - Thanks - named after Lyme Connecticut - where it was first discovered.
@@GrowingDeerTV Yep, that is correct.
So you just let the fawn suffer????
Elaine - It's illegal to kill a deer out of season. I suspect this fawn did not suffer long. Life in the wild is nothing like portrayed by most.
This is so sad.....
We need to eradicate ticks from the face of this earth. We are the only species smart enough to do it and it is our duty to do it.
Easy now - let's improve the habitat and burn on a schedule that replicates fire before settlement to reduce ticks!
@@GrowingDeerTV I was thinking more like using gene-drive to sabotage their reproduction and lead them to go extinct; or maybe less ambitiously, at least use gene drive to make them immune to many diseases they carry.
We need a good cold winter to kill off these ticks
I live in Missouri to and it's pretty bad
Yes, this year is very bad for ticks. Unfortunately, winter/cold temperatures don't kill ticks. They will simply go dormant in the leaf litter etc. They are a nasty parasite! I how you stay out of ticks this summer. -Daniel
I hate ticks! A totally worthless creature!!
Spi - Before European settlement of the States there were very large fires. The early explorers wrote about riding for days across fire scars. This reduced most tick habitat (deep leaf litter) and provided great early succession food for wildlife. The few ticks likely took out any sick critters. In that system, the few ticks were part of a working system.
the music sucks as bad as the ticks.
