    So what happened to the fawn?

  • @mrs.schmenkman
    @mrs.schmenkman 3 роки тому +16

    This is what happens when you don't have enough bird life. Crows and magpies are often chased away by the human populations and they are a huge control factor of ticks. I did notice that where your standing has almost no bird sounds for an area

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 роки тому +8

      Actually, tick populations increase when their habitat improves - like all species. The limited prescribed fire in most area has allowed way too much leaf litter to build up. Ticks need a moist habitat and when fire removes the leaf litter ticks dessicate.

      I came in from a productive day of scouting this week and pulled 20 something ticks off my ankles and legs that had dug into my socks. I had no idea they were such a big problem out here. But the video was right about one thing: I saw a lot more deer and deer sign in the areas where I picked up lots of ticks.

    Absolutely fascinating, I stumbled upon this video and watched the entire thing, I grew up in northeast Ohio and I’m sure there were plenty of ticks but as a kid I was allergic to everything so I was unaware. I moved to Southern California in 89 and in 30 years of owning dogs here in the inland empire I’ve seen 3 ticks, and those had to be pointed out to me by a lady sitting next to me in the waiting room at the vets office. She saw them on my newly adopted rescue dog, I hadn’t a clue. I cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like for folks who live in areas with that kind of tick populations. Wow.

    Another great show guys, and what a great way to show the impact of ticks on deer, we are miles and miles away from.you guys in VT, but this year has been horrible for ticks I've had a bunch get on me while at work, luckily the deer I've seen and had on camera don't appear taken over by them yet, we are hoping for the best and hope for the same for you, eliminate ticks!!! I've found that wearing tall boots (like muck boots) & tucking my pants inside them helps...but my ultimate tick prevention is duct tape! I learned how helpful its was, particularly for seed ticks, while in college doing radio telemetry studies. I tape around the top of my boots to seal between them & my pants. Then I tear off a few 6" strips & stick them to my thighs. If I happen to get a batch of seed ticks (the kind that looks like a black ball & then starts to spread making your heart race) I pull a strip off & pat them with the tape...similar to what was done in the test on the video. Captures them all! I also pat myself down with tape before getting back in the truck to go home.

    If i could a tip from us northern boys. I don't know if you have ever planted alfalfa but up here it is like soybeans. In Canada there are not any forage soybean company's to buy seed from but alfalfa is easy to find. Alfalfa puts on more forage then soybeans and has about the same mineral and protein levels and unlike clover it won't burn up mid summer. One mow and it will stay palatable for a long time and come fall you can drill your blend right into it. With is also being a perennial legume it will fix alot of nitrogen and you will not have to replant it every year.

Not so much this year - I have only seen maybe a dozen this year on myself & my dog total !!! Might just be me but, my observation is that i see less ticks in the woods - than in any taller grass / fields...

    @Growingdeer.tv - Have you noticed any direct correlations with the increased tick populations? Some I have been wondering about specifically are increased deer populations, increased clearings and food plots, etc. Have you noticed any correlations in these things? Also since you have started your Buffalo Technique, have you noticed a dramatic increase in ticks? What do you contribute to increase?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  6 років тому

      The high tick numbers is not limited to our property.This area has always had gad of ticks. Even only a few miles away where deer densities are low and habitat is continuous hardwoods. It is possible, timely spring rains and warm temperature have the most to do with high tick numbers. Ticks need moisture and are active in warmer temperature. The combination of both this spring probably allowed many ticks to survive. -Daniel

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  6 років тому

      No, ticks are not trying to kill deer. They are parasites and need a host to feed. It is not in their interest to kill the host and lose their food supply. But when a great number of ticks find a deer, infection can occur and chances of a tick borne disease multiply. -Daniel

      Fisher Barnett Amen to that. They deter me from predator hunting in the off season, they’re ravenous in Georgia.

      They are an important source of food for opossums and other animals, and the diseases they spread help control populations.

      Elaine - It's illegal to kill a deer out of season. I suspect this fawn did not suffer long. Life in the wild is nothing like portrayed by most.

    We need to eradicate ticks from the face of this earth. We are the only species smart enough to do it and it is our duty to do it.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  4 роки тому

      Easy now - let's improve the habitat and burn on a schedule that replicates fire before settlement to reduce ticks!

      @@GrowingDeerTV I was thinking more like using gene-drive to sabotage their reproduction and lead them to go extinct; or maybe less ambitiously, at least use gene drive to make them immune to many diseases they carry.

      @GrowingDeerTV  6 років тому

      Yes, this year is very bad for ticks. Unfortunately, winter/cold temperatures don't kill ticks. They will simply go dormant in the leaf litter etc. They are a nasty parasite! I how you stay out of ticks this summer. -Daniel

    I hate ticks! A totally worthless creature!!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 роки тому

      Spi - Before European settlement of the States there were very large fires. The early explorers wrote about riding for days across fire scars. This reduced most tick habitat (deep leaf litter) and provided great early succession food for wildlife. The few ticks likely took out any sick critters. In that system, the few ticks were part of a working system.
