god I fucking love the Lost Children chapters; it's so visceral, horrific and violent, yet it has beauty hidden within its deeper meaning and between the pages
I find the saddest thing about Rosines story is that since she was an apostle, she was damned; meaning she will suffer in the abyss forever as a child.
What I also liked is Guts in Black swordsman and lost children is becoming the same as Zodd, and it's why he is such a threat to the apostles he is losing that human side. It's that old adage of never pick a fight with a man that has nothing to lose. So it's a reverse guts is really the one who is truly unstoppable in these fights. Sure, he can be slashed and stabbed, but as long as he isn't outright killed, nothing can stop his rampage.
I understood Nina as someone who was envious of the strength and character of others, but in a way that made her resent it. It's why she professed to dislike Luca despite. Like how others grow bitter and envious over wealth. Luca distributed wealth, but there'll always be a disparity of character.
Nina is an interesting character to me because of the hate she gets and that's the point imo. We dislike character flaws of weakness, cowardice, and conformity because it reflects those flaws on ourselves that we may have. Act of courage can inspire us but also deflate us when one is still bound by fear, so I get why she spites Luca. However that is just more self projection of her own self loathing. Azan was definitely a good boy and a breath of fresh air in the darkness. Luca was another character that I surprisingly liked to and was glad she survived by sheer luck and the skin of her teeth. It shows that even in gritty, grimdark worlds, you can still have characters with morals and bright personalities.
At 2:32:42 that “thing” is called a “Man-Catcher”. They were often used in battle to capture enemy commanders and noblemen by dragging them off of their horses and pinning them to the ground. It’s rarely ever considered in media, but a lot of the time, knights could be worth a nice sum to whoever captured them.
And the best tactic against a knight was to dismount them and stick weapons in the weak points of the armor. You already plan to take him down. As a peasant mob or men at arms, you’d definitely enjoy getting your hands on that armor if nothing else.
I think it’s ironic how skull knight kinda causes the new world by not immediately killing the egg of the new world and instead saying “he’s weak enough” when he takes Luca. Showing that he’s just as big a part of the flow of causality as anyone else
Then when griffith baits his attack and uses it to destroy the separation between dimensions? Yeah Skull Knight seems super cool, but I think he’s a lot like Guts. Fairly hot headed and easy to bait out with anger.
The quiet, sad, introspective moments in berserk are so good. Far better than any of the fights. Godot's speech really influenced Guts till the very end of the manga it's hard to say much else has in the same manner.
Honestly, with Farnese's character, that is probably the first and only time anyone has ever told her not to pray. Her whole life when faced with anything I'm sure the thing she heard most in her life was to sit and pray about it, and now in a time like this it is a complete inversion of her world, from the horrors surrounding her to the words the man protecting her is saying, everything has changed. So I really like the don't pray line for that alone.
@@shadowofhawk55 I think the spanish inquisition did a good job considering that after defeating the moors, the iberians were still handling the remaining muslims and jews. They had to keep them in line until they completely expelled them.
Fun fact: that weapon whose name you didn't know, the one that closes around the neck, is called a mancatcher, specifically because it actually wasn't traditionally used for killing, but for capturing.
4:19:20 I think this quote sticks out to her because praying (and religion) is the blanket she has used to cover herself when she is scared since she was a child. She was absolutely scared of the situation (which is completely understandable) so she resorted to what she knew. However, Guts spurs her into fighting. It's not just Guts going "shut up and fight" but rather Farnese beginning to understand that she has to take action into her own hands if she wants to survive or just live a life of her own.
Ha, i was going to reply with this to someone else, but I think the best example of doing as much as you can, and asking God for help was Where the Red Fern Grows where he has to cut down the tree to get the coon, so chops on it all night with a hatchet, and all morning with an ax he's given. He stops after hours of working most of the tree down. It's always been a great scene to me that you can do so much, but when you've used up your all, you can ask for God to help with what you cant finish. ua-cam.com/video/MXhPrQbZQgQ/v-deo.htmlsi=wFrD23vTnMcC1wZD
Holy shit.... that's some damn good writing. The story of pekaf isn't just a story of guts, but it's also a foreshadowing of Rosine. The IRONY since Rosine loved that story.
Hopefully Susan Wobbajack can let me finish watching this time. I don’t come down to where she works and tell her how to wear her small hat correctly. 🎩 🐍 no step on Snek! 🇺🇸🇭🇰
Don't want to bring religion in and start a flamewar, but I'll just provide some clarification relating to the theological interpretation of "Thou Shalt Not Kill" In the original Greek, it doesn't say "Thou Shalt Not Kill". It says "Thou Shalt Not Murder". This is very important. In the Old Testament, the faithful kill absolutely tons of people - just look at Samson. The idea isn't that you don't ever take a life, no matter what. The idea is that you don't just stab someone for no good reason. So you can kill in self defence, or because they have committed heinous crimes, or in a righteous crusade, but it's not open season. It's just that the good ol' King Jimmy Edition uses the word "Kill" in the commandments, and that's where a lot of the confusion comes from. I mean obviously, it's been twisted many times throughout the ages to justify the unjustifiable, but the Devil can quote Scripture too, so it's important to have a proper understanding of the texts, so that people can't use it against you.
@I'mSneedingBro if I had a dime for every time I saw that claim... yeah no, see there are at least 3 views on why the OT lines you have in your head are not understood to be literally from God. In any case, all religions have a predominantly positive moral compass, so ''Loli'' here is right. So let's leave the theology to theologians, k?
@I'mSneedingBro oh no, oh my God. An internet atheist did a quick google search and found a quote that scholars have known about for centuries.... how could I have missed it? It's not like the 3 views that I mentioned have addressed those very passages that the internet atheist has found by doing ''research'' (aka literally typing ''bible bad'' in google and calling it research, then bragging about it like a child that found a rock). How many books have you actually read that deal with those topics and show why you are still wrong? I'll give you a small hint and then you can do actual grown-up research: what does the 1 Sam quote exclude? Do you know? Didn't think so
It's not just the "original Greek"; the Hebrew translated into Greek has the same "kill-murder" distinction. I'm guessing you have a preference for the Septuagint, which... putting aside that Jesus and His apostles used multiple Scriptural variants, 👍. Also, Samson isn't the best example, since he was at the tail end of a line of increasingly morally dissolute judges. The Hebrews warring with the "giant clans" on God's command is a better example, especially with how ritualistic their war procedures were.
gotta love the tendency of Guts...the guy literally on the verge of collapse with bruise / bleed / poison and no days of sleep...yet he still standing fighting like a fully recovered soldier. the guy is too literally too angry to give up
"...and it's also the longest arc in all of Berserk. Aw, dear sweet fucking Christ!" You can hear that realization sink in, it's great. Take your time and continue to do it right, man. Damn fine work.
I think that interpreting Miura as anti-Christian is hyperbolic, and interpreting him as Marxist is just profoundly incorrect. In common with a lot of Japanese writers, I think he just saw Christianity as a curiosity, and included a religion somewhat similar to it only in the capacity that it was appropriate to the kind of setting he had made. He certainly doesn't completely condemn religion. As for calling him Marxist, that's ludicrous. Guts is the most Byronic, self-actualized of heroes, and vehemently fights against authoritarianism and Griffith's collectivist ambitions. I would say he was far more anti-collectivist even than I am.
I think its a bit if a kneejerk reaction for people to just see religion in stories and think “Religion=bad” because… to be fair, it is done very frequently. Unfortunately most religious conflicts in fiction revolve around “religion good vs religion bad”. Personally, for my garbage tier personal writing, I decided to make one of my characters a practicing catholic because i thought it would be interesting for the character and had an SJW blow a screw loose one me claiming I was one, to which I had to politely inform them I was not.
Miura has stated in interviews he wanted to explore the idea of fanaticism in context of religion due to the sarin gas attacks by Aum Shinrikyo that took place in Tokyo metro in 1995. I would say he was anti-fanaticist, if anything.
Agreed. The point I got from this arc was that sitting around doing nothing and just praying isn't the solution even alot of religious people get this wrong. You are supposed to struggle and actually face your hardship and burden the same way guts does.
Honestly I think the fanatical evil Church in Berserk is one of the more sympathetic ones found in anime and manga. The heretics they persecute are a sadistic cannibal cult, Mozgus dies trying to save hundreds of people and Azan seems like a pretty decent bloke.
I'm very happy with Berserk's seeming dedication to remembering potential jobbers, and having them recur. It makes me attach myself to everything more.
This is really interesting. Prototype’s story is so cliché and by the books, and golden age is such a masterpiece. It’s honestly inspiring me. That I can improve my writing if I work hard enough.
I truly appreciate you putting in the tremendous amount of time and energy to make this. I just finished re-reading through Berserk again for probably the 15th time but will probably also watch this a couple times. There can never be enough Berserk, thank you Miura, you will never be forgotten
This is my favourite arc and it’s a shame it never gets adapted. Probably because more than any arc it shows the effect of the twisted world on normal people. Jill is a very relatable character.
If you were still wondering the plague doctors weapon is called the *man catcher* It was used in the all the way from the medieval ages to the 18th century to dismount cavalry and funnily enough in modern day to disable drunkards in some parts of Asia
"Her whole two years spent chasing guts and it all amounted to jack shit and Jack called into work today" oh it's lines like this that make me watch your videos
You've enlightened me. You've opened my eyes to something genuinely magnificent, I never knew Berserk was this deep and rich. I'd always assumed it was another edge-fest and I'm so pleased it wasn't. I'm truly thankful. Berserk's easily now up there with Warhammer as one of my favourite franchises.
The Lost Children Arc had to have been one of my all time favorite story arcs in the series, its so amazingly good and for some reason I just felt like it related to me in a sort of way.
These videos feel like a good balance between reading the story and understanding the importance of context; it's like if your bud who's really into the series was helping walk you through it, just awesome
The Conviction arc is one of the great peaks in a series of almost nothing but great peaks. I've been an Update Struggler for years now and I love the Read Along style of this latest episode, I was pausing on every panel. Also, what are the chances you'll ever make a Spotify playlist out of the Berserk video song choices? Your taste in music is killer.
I know this isn't a new video, but seriously this is easily the fourth time I've watched this one alone. Conviction is my favorite arc, but they are all great. I just love Berserk and don't get tired of hearing about it. So thank you for all of your videos, but this one in particular.
Its not a clever joke, there are many reasons why a famine can happen, in the Russian Empire, before the USSR, there was a famine every 3-5 years every time in different regions, and because of specific reasons, far beyond "lol, its just socialism, lmao". Google the UN statistics, there are 43 countries currently experiencing famine, are you sure that these are all socialist countries? I LOVE TheAlmightyLoli, but that joke looks a bit far fetched. And I wouldnt have written that if I hadnt seen this comment with a like. Well, at least there are people here willing to laugh their a*ses off at anything as long as its against something they dont like, so it wasnt for nothing, I guess.
The ending of the Conviction Arc is really bittersweet, compared to the endings of Berserk’s Golden Age and Black Swordsman endings, which were more depressing and tragic. In the end, Guts saved Casca from getting burned alive after she was believed to be a witch, but momentarily lost their demon baby after it got injured and it had been swallowed by the Behelit Apostle to heal it to give Griffith/Femto a physical form. Even though a lot of villagers and innocent people had been killed, there were still plenty of survivors, which included the refugees and prostitutes. Farnese gave up on being a holy knight after she was party responsible for the lives of the sick, innocent people children that Mozgus tortured and killed inhumanely. Even though she’s got a sick mind, Farnese eventually became a better person and a companion for Guts. Nina, despite of her cowardly and disgusting actions, eventually learned and regretted what she had done and faced the fact that no one like her would survive a cruel world like Berserk’s on her own and presumably became a better person by sticking with Joachim, despite her suffering from syphilis. Luca managed to survive the events of the Arc’s last chapter, same goes for Jerome. From what we can all assume, is that the two became an official couple and Jerome made Luca his mistress. Although they don’t plan to get married, they’d still be together. Azan survived and became one of Guts’ companions, even though he felt awfully guilty for letting many innocent refugees die by the hands of Mozgus and his fellow torturers. Mozgus and his disciples are finally killed for their awful actions, but they left a huge impact on some of the survivors, including Farnese, Azan and even some of the other remaining refugees. Overall, this ending feels like a bittersweet break from the downer endings from the last two arcs of the series.
I'm loving this series. I'm also loving that it essentially a read along. Hearing the story again is great. Falcon is massive. Don't be afraid to make it stupid long. I think i speak for a lot of us by saying this is essentially a radio show to me. I listen at work.
finally finsihed. Yeah keep a good balance between analyse and read along. That's exactly why I want to watch your video to Berserk so bad. Like in this video. There's no better way to show us why you love Berserk so badly. You potray everything in a way so that I basically feel what you feel. Or I feel what I think you feel. It keeps it engaging. The story, your narration, your presentation .. all of thiose things don't let me stop watching even if I wanna to (because of headaches, needing to sleep. etc.) I'm thankful you made this series and put the effort in!
There are two types of edgy. There’s edgy and then there’s Guts edgy. One wears all black, broods, has a tragic past, and kills BAD things. And the other wears all black, broods, has a tragic past, and kills…just kills…there is no grey area for this guy.
@@AcesahnEdgy is a problem if that’s all a character has to describe them. Berserk is the best example I can use for an “Edgy” character done properly, while most OCs on Tumblr or Twitter are the most generic bland garbage I’ve had the displeasure of seeing. Guts is the framework on which I base some of my own ideas on, as like his sword, while he has edges there’s still the core that holds it together. Following this analogy, Guts starts off rough and violent, much akin to the Dragonslayer itself. Then after the sword is reforged and Guts has his talk with Godot, he too is reshaped and refined, more efficient with a dedicated goal.
Only seen the movies before this series and have never really read any manga throughout my life, but I've been absolutely PLOWING through this series, you're commentary, music choice, humor, analysis, and narration mixed with the absolutely astounding story and artwork of Berserk have been absolutely fucking amazing man. So much so that I was crushed, no, devastated to see there isn't a part 4 yet. Needless to say I'm looking forward to it with baited breathe man, please do keep it up this shit is incredible!!
Probably my favorite arc of the series. Introduced new, great characters, a ton of progression for Guts as a character, imagery that is on par and I would argue more gruesome than the Eclipse at certain points, and the use of religion as an antagonistic force I see as more being against mob mentality and letting fear consume you. I argue that because the time period that Berserk is based on was notorious for those mentalities to flourish. Falcon of the Millennium Empire is probably the best arc of the series (though the trilogy of Golden Age, Conviction, and Falcon is rather equal imo) but this is the arc that hit me the most with its themes and dark explorations.
Man, that deconstruction of The Lost Children arc made me feel something... powerful. It's a shame that it'll never be adapted, nor continued upon now that Miyasaki is dead. Edit: It took me two days to realize it was Kentaro Miura, not Miyasaki.
AMAZING arc. For me it is the peak of Berserk, so many moments and meaning behind the scenes. The turning point for Guts and also the introduction of the new crew. THE INSANITY of everything that happened and it is much more to come, hope to see you cover the next arcs as well since I listened to this from start to end and your commentary is hilarious and entertaining.
I still didn't manage to watch part one, because copyright shenanigans, so I'll download this one before watching it. Your choice in music is also splendid as always.
If berserk ever continues. This will be the first place I go to analyse and think about the effects of cause and effect. Your videos are healing for me and my coming to terms with Miura's passing. You've done more than I could ever dream of. Thank you.
Love this video, thank you so much bro for making it a easier experience to read berserk and experience in a more laid back enjoyable edition, thank you for making this, really is some amazing content brother, edit: its just amazing the music and your narration, you may never see this but thanks so much you have to be one of the only youtubers I have watched most of your content and all of it lol all to the end no interruptions, enjoy the watch time :)

Incredible video, masterfully written. Have been waiting for this one since part 2 and I just needed to say that it’s almost insane the effort you put into this video and I’m legit thankful for these videos. Great job
This is your best Berserk video yet. I can tell that you are passionate about the series. The Conviction arc is one of my favorites, but your take on it made me aware of details that I missed even on my rereads. Thank you, you've earned your break
"That device" that plague doctor uses is called mancatcher and it is a real device that was used in middle ages by guards and such as a non-lethal takedown for armed people. It was used the same way as in manga - you thrust it into armed guy and catches his neck . Of course, real life either had a lot smaller and shorter spikes or doesn't had any spikes at all.
@@jackdaone6469 The thing about anything that is hundreds years old is that it probably was used by different people in different times and probably has a few dozen names that ultimately describe the same thing. xD
1:33:41 I might be crazy, but it looks like the behelit was starting to activate in that panel. The eyes don't look as far away from the nose as they usually do, which leads me to believe that Guts' hatred, as well as his self-doubt that was probably in the back of his mind while the demons were taunting him, were strong enough to make the behelit respond. I had this pointed out to me when I was showing this video to a friend who I introduced to the series back in high school, and I haven't been able to shake the implications of this (potentially not even real and we were just thinking about it too hard) detail.
Late af I know but just finished part 3, equally impressed as everyone else is by your ability as a storyteller, mate. Cant wait for part 4, much love from Aus you chief.
I also didn't mind it, because like most things coming out of Japan involving western religion, it's so laughably incorrect if it wasn't called "The Holy See" you probably wouldn't even know they were trying to parody or make a commentary about any real religion. Love Berserk though.
I’ve only just discovered & watched the 1997 berserk series. Now I’ve found this channel and I’ve watched from part 1 to this. Coolest shit I’ve ever watched
This series has followed me through my fair share of stuff in life, and even now it does. Having recently found your videos covering the whole saga, I'd like to thank you not just as a fellow fan but a person who tries to take as much as possible from this story - and Guts' adventures, what messages the author once wrote across all the masterfully crafted artwork in his pages. These videos too, being a journey that takes me back to all of it, start to finish, have brought me important thoughts and ways of dealing with them as the days pass. They've followed me for precious hours on the side, while I write or practice or well, simply watch them. Thank you, once more, for all the hard work. I'm sure it has helped or brightened the day of many more "strugglers" out there!

@@BarioIDLwell I mean the whole band is overkill personified

Don't want to bring religion in and start a flamewar, but I'll just provide some clarification relating to the theological interpretation of "Thou Shalt Not Kill"
In the original Greek, it doesn't say "Thou Shalt Not Kill".
Thanks for writing this out I've been trying to explain this for people since I found out the original text
People that don’t realize mis-translations exist are the most annoying
Aw, dear sweet fucking Christ!"
You can hear that realization sink in, it's great. Take your time and continue to do it right, man. Damn fine work.
Could we get a list of the original music in the description? I always add them to my spotify
You wouldn't happen to know the name of the song at 1 hour and 8 minutes...would ya?
Reminds me of the situation with Evangelion, since they're similar in that regard.

Lost Children is my favourite arc in the entire manga.
It's just so gnarly and Guts is at his most animalistic.
I'm loving this series. I'm also loving that it essentially a read along. Hearing the story again is great. Falcon is massive. Don't be afraid to make it stupid long. I think i speak for a lot of us by saying this is essentially a radio show to me. I listen at work.

I'm thankful you made this series and put the effort in!
There are two types of edgy. There’s edgy and then there’s Guts edgy. One wears all black, broods, has a tragic past, and kills BAD things. And the other wears all black, broods, has a tragic past, and kills…just kills…there is no grey area for this guy.
Edgy is only a problem when the plot doesn't make said edginess valid.

I'm really happy there are people in the world who are willing to give Berserk the time and appreciation it deserves.
So glad to see this back. Keep up the amazing work.

"That device" that plague doctor uses is called mancatcher and it is a real device that was used in middle ages by guards and such as a non-lethal takedown for armed people.
