      @@SamsTrains are you going to get the new murphys models 121 class? I had an 071 class made by them and i found it to be a great model. It came out a good few years ago but it was a spectacular puller, very detailed and very sturdy. It survived falling off my table in which i had my layout a good few times. (Im very clumsy) It eventually broke (not exactly suprising considering how i treated it) when it fell off the table i had my layout on. I have since stopped the hobby because i dont have enough time for it. I have all my engines still and i dont think im going to use them anymore. The 071 has seen better days. I loved that locomotive a lot and its unfortunate that it has become so damaged. I have a few others including an A4, An LMS patriot, a gwr 5700 pannier etc. if you want them just say so. Id prefer to see them lookiled after than rotting away in the attic. I just dont have the time nor money for the hobby anymore. Great video as always. :D

    I think the Stanier Moguls look absolutely incredible, you could easily mistake it for a Black Five, but only has one set of bogey wheels instead of two sets, and it’s a lovely locomotive. The preserved example, 2968, was once based on the Severn Valley Railway, but I don’t think it is there anymore, as far as I know. It’s a lovely locomotive and it’s not something you see everyday.

    A nice model of a rather important mid-line mixed traffic type. The numbers of Moguls built by BR speaks to their utility. Also, I have a Bachmann Ivatt 2mt TANK engine that weighs 340 grams. Sometimes Bachmann makes these things bricks - which they should do more often!

    Nice review Sam! This Stanier mogul reminds me of the Black 5 due to it's shape. It also has the almost exact same power classification which is a 5P but the Stanier mogul is a 4F while the Black 5 is a 5F or 5MT. And when you mention about the wheel set being similar to the LMS Crab you're right it does look very similar to the LMS Crab locomotive. So this locomotive was probably from the Black 5 and the LMS Crab even though the Black 5 came out later than the Stanier Mogul did. :P

  • @StaxRail
    @StaxRail 4 роки тому

    Just to let you know Sam, most people would prefer engines not to speed up suddenly as it reduces wear on the wheels, and also the motor. I reckon it's most likely because of a large brass flywheel, which also aids slow speed performance. My Hornby model of Tornado does the same and is fine after a fair few years. The play in the axles is usually to accommodate smaller radius curves, but it can be a pain if not done properly

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      That's not true with this one - no flywheel to my knowledge! I agree you don't want models to speed up suddenly, but you achieve that by careful controlling, not by having an underpowered motor! ;)
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

So if it seems to be struggling then I'd take another look at the valve gear. Also as for curve I find bachmann engine don't always go round the curves they say they do.

    Even better 4 yrs on I’ve picked a secondhand one for £80 (looks like it was never run accessories bag is untouched). Purely bought as this was a gap in my Stanier collection. I’ve watched too many of your reviews, first thing I did was to check if the buffers where sprung.

  • @robmasterman
    @robmasterman 4 роки тому

    That's a fine model Sam, interestingly, when I started modelling in the 1950's the best then available was HornbyDublo..later Wrenn and they were of all metal construction. However, they were very expensive, and something I longed for for many years. Triang introduced the Plastic molded bodies which were produced at a much reduced cost. So the relatively high price for these finely detailed models today, in real terms, is comparable with these top end models all those years ago. I don't quite understand why not having sprung buffers is an issue, as the cannot be used as such...we'll be looking for working brakes next...lol.....Bob

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Thanks a lot Bob - oh yes, the Dublo stuff had a great reputation didn't it?! No sprung buffers isn't a problem at all - but I'd expect a much better price when features such as those are ommited!

    Reason its £50 off is because Hattons are trying to shift their remaining Bachmann stock for cheap. Bachmann no longer supply Hattons due to a dispute over them making their own 66 to compete with the Bachmann model.
    Once all the Bachmann stock is gone from Hattons it won't be restocked and no new Bachmann releases will be on Hattons.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      I don't think that's why it's discounted though - most of their other Bachmann products are back at the RRP or close to it - which suggests that they're trying to maintain their stock!

    Hi Sam as a new enthusiast to the model rail sector just wanted to say how much I appreciate your model reviews, especially the rating system you have and how thorough, fair and objective you are. I feel that when the models are so relatively expensive in consideration to the number and variety available, it's critical to have a benchmark as a prospective purchaser to work from. Do you publish an up to date list of your ratings for reference purposes? Also you test pre DCC chip installation. In your opinion are the models better performers after chipping? The cynical part of me feels that manufacturers may seek to increase value in the product by deliberately not fitting chips wanting that secondary DCC chip market to increase overall profit. May it also increase their desire to fit less sophisticated motors/bearings etc as in, once fitted, the chip gives more satisfaction in the product performance? Would value your thoughts. Cheers.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Thanks very much for that mate, you're very kind - glad to hear these videos are of use to you! I'm working on having the ranking list publicly accessible from next year - it would be great! That may well be a possibility - but I'm sure Hornby and Bachmann (for example) are aware that their decoders aren't the best - so I'm certain they don't expect to turn a greater profit by not including them, since most would buy better decoders if forced to buy them separately. This year Hornby have been making DCC versions of most of their models, which do seem to sell well!

    I’ve had that problem with West Country class locos. It’s a bastard. I’ve never really overcome it either as there’s not enough room and or too much flex on curves to allow enough clearance at each extreme and across all in-between positions. Such a let down. I did notice on yours when you shot it on the bench power supply, that the right middle wheel is quite distorted and that would give a moment of beyond its normal maximum flex. If your brave and can be bothered; you could carefully machine that true and i think it would really improve yours. Or change that axle if you have a correct one to replace it with. 😉

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

    It is a nice model to buy and see in action on both model or real life forms. 2968 on the Severn Valley Railway is going to be painted into LMS black livery and she will be in steam hopefully during next year.
    It strange that this model of this loco is very expensive as I think it should be £139 instead because this model as you putted out on some of the details, but it never the less it is a good model.
    However it unfortunate that the model has a three pole motor instead five pole which would make the loco a great performance, I think Bachmann should really use the same motor from the Hornby LMS Black Five.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Thanks a lot Joe - and for the info on the real one! I agree - £139 would be a much better price for something like this, with a retailer price of below £100! I think so too - Bachmann have no good reason to stop using their 3 pole motors - based on their replacement price, they're incredibly expensive and not that great!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Stanier started learning that everything GW wasn't necessarily right. The engine as originally out shopped even had a GW coffee pot with combined safety valve and top feed cover. It was no better than the Crabs and many thought it inferior. He learned to increase the number of superheaters and provide domes. In my opinion this engine does not look as well balanced as the Black 5.

    Hi Sam. I had a dumb question on the subject of pick-ups. I would think that as long as the loco runs reliably over points, it would be ideal to have as few pick-ups as it could get away with. After all, more than necessary is just more to clean and more wiring. I wouldn't know about how much it would reduce cost, but I feel that easier maintenance would be a nice advantage. So, I would like to ask, is there a serious advantage for having more pick-ups? I enjoy the content; keep it up.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Trent - yes I think there is an advantage - the more pickups means less current passing through each wheel - less current means smaller sparks on the track, which results in less oxidation, which in turn results in cleaner wheels! It also guarantees the best continuity with the track! :D

    Nice review as usual. The clicking valve gear is not a design flaw after all its a scaled down version of Stanier's design. I would go as far to say the model was mishandled at some point in the past possible when manufactured and the rods were bent in to each other at that point, especially as the other side was ok. My N gauge Flying Scotsman suffer a similar problem and I think it was caused when testing in the model shop. You say you don't like bending the parts like you did, try it on an N gauge loco, that is really nerve racking.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Hi Rob - but the valve gear isn't a scaled down version of Stanier's design - it's just designed to give that impression! It could well have been mishandled, you're right! Blimey, I'd really hate to try that with anything N gauge!

    I think the crank is ever so slightly too close to the connecting rod as well. This is especially odd from Bachmann since they make dents in their connecting rods on the older OO and the super-detailed N models to prevent that issue. Really a is shame.

      @@SamsTrains , yes this is easily the best Bachmann steamer I own for a few reasons and your review was spot on! I haven't had any of the linkage problems you encountered thank goodness and it goes round 2nd radius curves with no problems. The mechanism seems to have greatly improved even from recent similar models like the J11 and the 4F that have bearings, tender pickups and a lot of diecast weight and it is so quiet I can't hear any gear or motor noise (my J11 is like yours e.g. DCC-fitted and sounds like a coffee grinder at all speeds). The slow runnning is the best of all my Bachmann steamers and even compares with the high-end Hornby models. So in a way for the first time this is a better all-rounder for me than say even the Hornby King Class or the Lord Nelson as it runs almost as well and is a lot more robust without bits dropping off when handling. I'm scared to even pickup my King Class as it is so plasticy and fragile so it doesn't get run (I too have a big circle of track on a wooden floor in a spare bedroom). If Bachmann could produce steamers to this standard for a good price then it would be a win-win so Hornby should take note and maybe stop making extremely fragile plasticky top-end models with great chassis but 'cheap' superficially pretty exteriors that I don't think will stand the test of time and repeated handling.
      And thanks for the reviews and that you are unbiassed and fair - I won't now buy a model until you have reviewed it and given it the thumbs-up as they are just too expensive now to take a gamble on as it can take me months to save for a high-end model these days and it is getting tougher trying to justify the spend to the missus so I just tell her that Sam likes it so must be good!

    I've had a somewhat similar experience with a Bachmann 2251 (Collett Goods), mine specifically has a very difficult time on 2nd radius curves, the front axle is absurdly stiff and the rods being done up too tight from the factory didn't help things either. Strange that some of the Bachmann USA Spectrum locos seem underpowered as well.
    I wonder how Hattons manages these deals, though!
