Al, a while back you talked about Banks power and recommended we check out their channel. I did, and one of the things they talk about is black smoke in a diesel means you're running waayyy to rich and just spiking EGTs through the roof. A properly tuned diesel should only have the tinniest hint of smoke at full power, "rolling coal" isn't really cool and isn't good for your motor. Not sure how good that tuner is, but I wouldn't be taking the vehicle back to him. As always though, loving the build and the content. Cheers
Tunning for max power (which is what they showed in this video) and tunning for economy and long engine life (banks) are not the same. If the engine can handle the egt spike you can use excess fuel to spool the turbo much faster, this is why they did the max power tune and mentioned using afc live a dozen times to be able turn in down for normal purposes. Yes you can make the same power without the smoke, but it will cost a fortune in parts upgrades. And even once that's done if you add fuel, you will get a gain of power again. A max power tune will always smoke, this is what things like variable geometry turbos help with so you can get the quicker spool and not have the fueling set as aggressive. However vgt turbos are expensive, hard to tune, and are far less reliable. This is also a old mechanical throttle, if you mash it to the floor it dumps in the max fuel. Banks uses a 6 thousand dollar Bosch ecm and a electric throttle to ramp in fueling to keep it from smoking, thats just simply not an option on the old Cummins. Don't get me wrong I watch banks as well, its just not as simple of a thing as "smoke bad" as some like to think. "Max power running clean" and flat out max power for the same setup are not the same, running clean will always be the smaller power level. It just depends on what you want from the engine. My daily diesel, I drive truck, is tunned clean. I want a long engine life and the best fuel economy I can get. My old 1 ton plow truck at home, that runs a programmer so I can "set it to kill" and it will smoke like a train and make great power if im out having fun, I also have milder no smoke tunes for when I'm plowing snow or towing so I don't melt my engine. This is not a right vs wrong question, its a "what do you want from the engine" question.
Well this has a mechanical fuel pump so itßs really hard and timeconsuming to fine tune it like an electronic injection system, if it´s even possible to do so. Nonetheless good call Banks is like the diesel tuning god. Great to see more people spreading around that roaling coal isn´t cool.
Correct black smoke us from overfueling, but mechanical injection pumps and big turbos don’t really work well together. Not like modern common rails that have more control over injection quantities.
@@jaydunbar7538 so what I hear you saying is that it is a dyno queen. To tune it without the intended AFC in place on the premise that it is going to do what you expect it to do when it is fitted is not the work of a decent tuner. A decent tuner would tell you to come back when you have it fitted then we will talk. It is well known that P pumps are not very efficient across a wide rev range, but this doesn't even come close to having any portion of the rev range right. Having it billow out black smoke to make max power is a misnomer. When copious amounts of unburnt fuel occupies space in a cylinder it can not possibly produce peak power. If that was true the same would hold true for petrol engines as well, and we all know that past a certain point of over rich it starts to lose power. This is a half assed tune, that is overly rich because the tuner doesn't know how to get it close without risking mechanical failure. I would bet dollars to donuts that Gale Banks could get more power with less smoke using the same P pump. Tips and tricks acquired over the period of a life time is the difference between an expert tuner and a wanna be. But don't piss in our pocket and tell us it's rain. Ordinary is ordinary, and that tune is ordinary.
