- How to Plant a Shrub in a Container - In this video I cover the basics of how I plant shrubs and trees in containers. In the video I plant an Autumn Bonfire™ Encore® Azalea into a terra cotta container. I like to amend the potting soil to create some additional drainage when planting woody ornamental plants in containers.

Needed your advice for container planting today. I just love you playlist. Thank You Jim 🌳🌳🌳🐕
That’s going to be gorgeous! Because of you, every time I plant anything I chant, “Plant it high, it won’t die; plant it low, it won’t grow!” 😆 New t-shirt slogan? 🤔
Good idea really
Perfect timing for this video as I just bought 3 azaleas! Thanks for all that you do.
Good to know they can go in containers.
Thanks Jim!!
I always thought the rule was to fertilize all pots and flowers every 1-2 weeks during growing season. This is great information! I’ll save enough to but more plants! Lol. Thanks, Jim. 💕💕💕
Thank you!🌸
That was a lot of very useful information! And the azalea looks great in the pot!❤
It really does. Thanks for watching 😊
Always love the videos. Great info

Good info. Thank you.
Love , Love this Channel!
Thank you for that😊
i've seen shrubs in pots, but never paid much mind. I'm going to have to give this a whirl this year. Great video, thanks!
Thanks for watching 😊
Good information...thank you !
Thanks for watching 😊
Wow 😍 those muscles 💪
Genius.
I love the autumn bonfire. I have some autumn twist I'm putting on the foundation of my house. I'm going to have to give container planting an azalea a try as well. I live in zone 7a. Would I have to bring my 1 gal azalea in during the winter months of I planted it in a 3 gal pot? As always Jim thank you for all your advice.
like the shirt! cleveland county here
Nice!!
Happy Spring Jim!
I’m potting up some Swamp White Oak seedlings from my state Conservation Dept.
I haven’t been able to find “Pine Bark Soil Amendment” where I live. I recently purchased a block of Cocoa Coir mulch (neutral PH)
It is MegaMulch from the PlantBest company. Do you have any idea if that is a suitable substitute for Pine bark fines? I *do* have some hardwood “fines” ....how about these as a substitute for the pine bark?
Thanks - it’s a joy to watch and learn as you transform your new property.
🙂 Kim
Older video but Im researching how to create a garden oasis on my patio and which plants, shrubs and trees work best. Ive worked for years getting the inside of my home the way I wanted it and now, its times to move on to the outside. Im going to use some of your suggestions to get some greenery on the patio but my question is, are these plants going to be okay outside in pots? Because I certainly wont be able to bring them inside. Also, do we just treat them like any other shrub, perennial, or tree that is planted outside? I know watering in the summer is very important but Im more worried anout winter months. Im in same zone as you, well almost 😊
Do you habe a bideo for Container planting for small trees to go on patio? Thanks for the help ❤
👍🏼
Hey there Jim, Vivian zone 7b Alexandria VA. Was checking out Plants By Mail and they seem to be out sold out of most everything. Is that normal for this time of year? If so, any other online sources you can recommend? Was looking for a Witch-hazel tree, golden redbud tree and some variegated red twig dog wood Shrubs. Also any recommendations on a variety of white flowering dogwood tree would be greatly appreciate. Thanks for all you do!!!
I bought what is called Christmas cheer azaleas. Can I use compost
Will it winter over in an unheated greenhouse? Zone 4 Colorado on the plains
I just purchased a Euonymus japonicus 'Happiness'. I want to transfer it to a container. What type of container do you recommend?
How many gallons of nandina shrub can I plant to 18-inch terra cotta? Thanks in advance for answering.
What brand of potting mix is he using?
Hi Jim! Can you let me know if I can use Plant Tone to refresh regular potting soil from last year that I want to reuse for annuals or perennials? Thanks for all of your help!
Yes, that would work. A lot of times o take half old soil and half new soil. That is a good strategy.
@@JimPutnam Half old and half new in addition to Plant Tone? or do either strategy by itself?
Do you sell any of these? If not where do you purchase your Azaleas from?
What do you recommend to do in order to keep a container lighter and more portable? Can you put something lighter than soil in the bottom?
You could consider using an Ups-A-Daisy insert.
For Azalea, How long will it be before you need to upsize the container? The one you use doesn’t seem to be much bigger than the root ball. Thank you.
He explained in the video.. have a tendency to water too much.. rule of thumb is usually 1 to 2" bigger than the plant.. can always upsize
Jim, what do you do with it in the winter?
It is cold hardy enough that it will be fine with limited protection. I may just putt all my pots close together.
Jim, do you need to put rocks in the bottom of the pot to help with drainage?
Definitely not. I wish I had talked about now that you ask. The bottom of the soil is always to wet. Gravel actually raises the wet area up into the root zone. This is one of those myths that can actually damage your plants. I may talk about on Sunday. Thanks for asking.
HortTube with Jim Putnam thank you
I'm glad you asked that question Debbie! Holy cow I've been putting rocks or styrofoam on the bottom. Ugh. Jim, I think yea that would be a great topic to cover on Sunday.
@@FriedaBabbley I'll do it
One thing I do put in the bottom of the pot over the drainage hole to keep the dirt from draining out when watering is a coffee filter.
How long can it live in that pot? And do you put it in larger pot or ground?
At least a year. Then it can be repotted or planted in the ground
Do you run drip to your containers?
I will for sure, but I am weeks away from that. Future containers will have the tube run through the hole in the bottom.
Pearlite or vermiculite. What's the difference? Does it really matter which to use? 🍃🌱🌳🌹
Perlite is far more porous so much better for this application. Good question
What was the name of the fertilizer you used?
Espoma Holly Tone
Will the azalea remain in the pot, and will it come back year round in the pot?
It can stay on that container a year for sure. Then it either need a little new soil or be repotted
If I could stop gazing at your grass I could pay more attention to what you are saying.
Jim off topic but the 3 comments with the name Tyler is a spam bot that is attacking other channels. Please report and block. Thank you.
Yeah, I figured after I responded to the first one. Thank you
