When you speak English especially with a native speaker, there is no time to think about grammer. But it is important in writing.

For me I focus on learning English as a spoken language like how sentences are flow naturally like a real conversation whether it's written or spoken. I set plans that help me master the language like listening to a conversation or a story. Then, I write down the phrases/ sentences that I've never heard of them before, checking the spelling on dictionary just in case I wrote them wrong. When I'm done, I read what I've just written even if they're not connected. Next, I give my opinion out loud either by voice recording or make it on a video. Also, I have another technique that I follow to keep going. For example, I put plans for the whole day like when I wake up in the morning I say it loudly to remind myself for what I'm gonna do and in the same time practicing pronunciation.
Grammar came last, only when I try to say something in the meantime or to tell an event that happened in the past. What I want to say that I can speak English fluently without paying too much attention to grammar. I try to keep it simple.

You really encourage me to do this. I feel how you talk from experience and I love it. I'm Music teacher at elementary schools so I'm in contact with children every day and believe me I live what you are saying. That's the normal way. Don't forget that in the school the system is focusing on mistakes our kids make, not on their achievements!

Thanks for your video. It was clear and very well explained. I want to share my point of view with you and all people in this channel. I believe as teacher that simply there are two type of communication formal and informal, which means that those people who learn with repetition without rules, obviously will have a limited structure in the way how they communicate. I mean that the easiest way it is not never the most convenient. I am not say that there is not exceptions, but mostly when you learn English taking account to develop all the skills, listening, speaking, reading , writing and I also include grammar and pronunciation. When you put all of these factors together at the moment you are learning a second language I am sure that the result will be better. Those people that they are saying on video that you can learn a language in 3 or 6 months is only marketing, learning take time, because is not only the language also you need to include culture . They way how people express thing and how the say it.. Well that´s all, if someone wants to give some comments respect to this comment I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Great lesson. I strongly believe that no one needs to learn grammar rules by heart. Application of grammar rules is a hundred times more important than that. I mean, for example, why should anyone learn the names of the different types of adverbs and adjectives if they can just use the different types correctly?

When I learnt English I did the very same. I learnt by association. (Cognitive knowledge) I just listen and memorize. I imitate. I agree with you. The same I did when I learnt Portuguese as I speak Spanish. I think the point for us non-natives is to learn :
    pronunciation
    Phrase verbs
    And vocabulary
    Grammar 0
I imitate brit accent and European Portuguese
And perhaps the one of the most interesting point is to pay attention to body language and intonation

I learned to speak English and Japanese without having to study grammar in either. I only check grammar rules for the occasional reference. A little disclaimer though: I'm yet to take the C1 and N2 proficiency exams in English and Japanese, respectively, so I wouldn't call myself fluent in either.
Conscious grammar study is not an effective way of being able to speak in another language. The subconscious acquisition is the main thing that affects the output.
Just as a side note, my native language is Arabic. All of the three languages have widely different grammar rules and have very different origins, so no specific language has accelerated my learning process of another language's grammatical rules.
Edit: I passed the N3 Japanese proficiency test within 18 months of starting learning the language. Not a world record, but I'm pretty sure that's an impressive achievement. :P

I'm a grammar lover. Grammar paved the way for me to learn English. I often tell my students that grammar is just like the ground we step on while we walk, the more steady it is, the more confidence we have to walk on it (i.e. talk in English). Obviously, I constantly tell them not to fear making mistakes, cause they inevitably will; I myself make mistakes to this day and am learning all the time.
But we cannot fool ourselves and think we can learn the same way a child does because adult brains are completely different. We already have input from our native language and that is something children do not struggle with while learning whatever language it is. I know plenty of people who have gone to English speaking countries and came back to Brazil speaking little English.
Learning a language is more related to the person's attitude towards it than to methods. Of course, there are things (exercises, approaches, etc.) that can be better than others, but in general the will to learn is what makes people achieve more progress as I have witnessed with my students these past years.

It's interesting thing that my experience was, at some point a long time ago. I used to be able to speak English more fluently, less mistakes without knowing a lot of grammar rules.
I have much more understood English grammar now, but my speaks is getting worst, more stutter, and more confusing(in my head) as to which tense should I use and/or which word should be using, all that kind of stuff. Those are making me more stutter when speaking. That discourage me a little bit.

I'm a native English speaker from America. I'm not really aware if I know any grammar. At least not in the traditional sense. I never paid attention in school. I probably make a lot of text book mistakes when speaking. I don't even know what all the grammar terms mean. I probably passively and indirectly picked up grammar. Automatically without actually knowing that I was learning it. I think you can learn English without directly focusing on learning grammar.

Yeah, you just have to spend more then 10 years on being corrected by adults. What is true for any native speaker born in a country in which a certain langauge is spoken. You also have to attend formal education on promary level were you are being tauth all this but never think about twice later in life. So the most honest answer we can give is NO! you cannot learn any language without learning grammar. No human is born with innate grammar knowledge. What's more and we know now from all the rsearch done so far that our ability to produce the concept of grammar within our brains is uniquely human. And that "wild children" which have been abandoned by humans and have spend certain amount of time only among wild animals can never learn to comprehend grammar or produce the concept of grammar inside their brain past certain age (the limit is about 7 years of life). So yes, someone has to teach your grammar at certain point. Otherwise you would utter single words but most likely only nouns (for example this is what animals such as dogs or cats comprehend and learn) but you can of course turn a blind eye to this fact and go through life ignoring the fact that you know grammar beacuse your granny or grandpa has done the work, because you attended a primary school or a kindergarten you don't even recall or because every time you got things wrong your mother would correct you. So remember this- science doesn't have to guess, science already has a lot of evidence that unless you are taught grammar , no concept of grammar or ability to process grammar is accessible to your human brain. And don't fall for empty promises that anyone can teach you any language without teaching you grammar of it.

@@femmeNikita27 I'm a native of America. So obviously I speak English as my first language. I wasn't saying I don't know any grammar. Obviously I do but probably aquired it indirectly. Because I've never studied it a day in my life. In school kids don't pay attention to that stuff. What I meant is I know it subconsciously or intuitively. I don't recall ever learning any grammar. I actually don't understand or couldn't explain english grammar. I know how to speak correctly. But I couldn't explain the underlying grammar behind it. For example why this is correct and another way isn't. Because you can learn to speak. While picking up grammar automatically and indirectly.

I just listen to natives and repeat exactly how they say things. That way I know it's correct. You're indirectly picking up the grammar as well. I'm not saying don't study grammar directly. I need to, and think you should. But only like light explanations to help. I'm just saying I use grammar. But, I'm not aware of it. I couldn't explain it it. I don't know what this or that is on my native languages grammar. I don't know all the terms for this and that. For example I didn't even know what a conjunction was. But I do it in my native language. Without even knowing I was using it.

When you write ,or speak to someone for business ,or formal meetings ...off course the grammar matters ! And off course in our daily lives ! But ,you don't have to worry so much of the grammar to have a real good casual conversation ! Just focus on syllables, accents & intonations 1st ! ( watch her video on that topic ,too ! She made a real good video ! 👍)Concentrate on 'em ! Then make friends to speak in English ,preferably native speakers ! Then build vocabularies ,then pay more attentions on grammar ( learn them more seriously ).💜💜💜💜🥁🐉🎵🎤🎶💕💞P.S.get yourself an English/ English dictionary for kids ! That way you'll learn like kids learn their English ! I did ! I still do !

When you are a kid you are not thinking about mistakes when you are an adult you think about that. You can not compare kids brains to adults brains . they are much faster everything stick into their mind much faster than into our minds and by far. Kids are kids . We are adults already and our brain works diferent .If we do not learn grammar or atleast the basics how are we suposed to talk... Learning a new language requiered effort and patience. And those kids their first languege were english but in our cases it is not. And those who moved to other country to improve their english ofcourse They had to take the basic grammar. they can not play others fool. I recomend atleast to learn how to talk in past future and those times tences. and the rest can come little by little and try to get all the exceptions. because english has more exceptions than rules . i am( on )that team . i am( in )that class. You was mad( at) me. You was upset( with) me. we are in problems, we are at war . Those are the exceptions that i mean ,and there are tons of them Tons of tons adjetive that stick on some prepositions. and those things you have to learn by heart. there aint choise about that. but past future and etc tences are important to learn to be able to discust topics.
