Side Control Escape Series

  • In this video I demonstrate a series of techniques designed to make your opponent posture and thus regain guard.
    Each of these techniques individually isnt high percentage, but the threat of these moves can illicit a lot of responses from your opponent that can set up escapes.
    Having the ability to escape from Side Control all starts with having correct body positioning including your hands being in a safe place.
    It's important that these techniques fit well together against someone that likes to try and Cross Face and keep the hand by the hip. In the event that your opponent does get a Cross Face, controls with the hand over the body or grabs the pants near the knee, you will have to use a different set of escapes.
    besides the hand positioning I talk about the centerline and how to control in Side Control. Understanding what the person on top is going to do and what they are thinking will help you better understand the escapes as a comprehensive system to regain guard or gain the outcome of the individual techniques.
    At any point, if they resist and take pressure off of you, that is your opportunity to slide a knee in, belly down or turn away.
    With that being said, the hand that is controlling the tricep is very important. Most people that practice this try to dominate that hand solely with their arm. There is a combination of moving the hips into your opponent's arm as well as pulling it into you that can be highly uncomfortable. If the person does not feel the need to move their hand from the floor by your hip then that means that your body positioning (specifically your hips) is off. Practice this until you get the pressure right.

    Very nice Jeremy. You really clarified for me that getting an arm on the neck does not mean getting the cross face. Love the detail about rolling away before going for the reverse triangle. I am all about the reverse armbar.

    There is a 5th option from side - Ghost escape. I am not sure if you consider that underhooking and coming out the back, but to me it is different. Thankyou again for the awesome videos, it is not just the videos, but you whole approach of having everything documented and online to share that i really appreciate.

    Tried 3rd option (trap & roll) today but without initiating push-back response by sliding hips away and coming back and was unsuccessful. You definitely can't muscle this, especially anyone with an average sense of balance and base. I ended up going to my move I use too much and owe you royalties for - Elbow Roll & Belt Grab. This works on 97% of all people I roll with regardless of belt.

      It is the kids curriculum. I have a curriculum that I use for the adults as well but there is not a board for it.

    The problem I have with putting the hand on your forehead is that people seem to go to north south instead which seems harder to escape. Instead I've seen putting the close hand like a scoop on the top guys bicep (top arm). What's your opinion of this?

      I highly recommend turning the palm out to scoop the bicep after it has made contact with your opponents bicep. I talk about avoiding reaching out to catch the bicep as you can "miss it" and you end up getting crossfaced. I agree with you and your assessment of North/South and you should try to avoid letting your opponent go there.

    so i know its a huge mistake i likely made but in side control sometimes i find their weight catches down on both my hands or shoulders preventing me from getting the forearm against their throat (framing) ... so im basically flattened out and can only maybe hip bump and they can base , or i could try to shrimp but really not much room to work with it seems, any ideas?

      Remember that space is made on the way down from your hip bumping (bridging). The bridge does not have to be an explosive movement and if you bridge and hold it, then as you drop your hips you may find that it is easier to shrimp on the way down from the bridge rather than after your hips have already hit the floor. Basically, combine the two movements. If that doesnt work out, let me know and I'll try and help the best that I can.
