Among Mel Gibson's best work. Easily.
So much star power, too.
A syndicate called The Syndicate? Its called The Outfit. Porter keeps getting it wrong and gets corrected each time.
"You see me reaching for my Freaking' wallet?!?!"
I'd love to drop that line in a real-life situation but I'd be worried nobody would get it and I'd just sound like an asshole!
@@OverdueReview lmao I know it's hilarious... my all time favourite for sure..
*Fucking* wallet!
@@OverdueReview yeh, but then you could say, "I learned it from Mel Gibson!" (Ok, I know he didn't say the line, but ....)
Great review, great dialogue. Subbed
Keep up the good work you the best
Thanks!
I love this movie. I rewatch it like once a year :D
Gibson went through all that crazy shit because he dared to tell ppl who and what jews are
I actually thought Kristofferson did a hell of a job in this. That line about promising he won't know what his ball tastes like is exactly what you'd expect out of the head of a crime syndicate would say to a guy in that situation. If you've seen Kris in other movies, I bet you'd agree this is probably his best acting job of all of them.
He will always be the Rubber Duck
From Convoy to me.
I've only seen him in this and the Blade Trilogy. I'd have to agree with you
I love his part in The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico.
Ugh. It is just generic big boss man stuff we've seen before, just not as good. The truth is that Kristofferson was brought in at the last minute because the script as originally written was deemed lackluster or faulty. The director's cut is superior.
@@wet-read Saw it once. Hated it. This version is better.
I love this film it's one of my favourite Mel Gibson starring movies.
This was a great movie. Always loved how they would refer to the $130 000 but Mel would always correct them and say it’s just $70 000. And they would be like what????
My suits are worth more than that! 😂
It was robbed money anyway. That is why it is so funny that he now does not want more than he is offered.
Porter is a great character, dark, challenging and yet still relatable and fun. And Mel does a fantastic job as usual.
Brian Helgeland was fried from the project and the scenes you complain about were all in the rewrites and reshoots. I suggest you take a look at payback: Straight Up (the director’s cut) and compare it with the theatrical. It’s a very interesting comparison because they are practically two different films!
exactly
Most times I prefer a director's cut, but in this instance the theatrical release was superior.
This film is a love letter to the gritty action movies of the 1970s.
It's a fucking remake of the much better Point Blank but this fact seems to have eluded our film genius. Based on a Richard Stark novel. The same character is in the Outfit too. Parker in the books but never Parker in the films (until Jason Statham). BTW The Outfit is 10x better. Tho Payback apparently has a 'blunch' of style whatever the fuck a blunch is.
I totally agree with the 4/5 star rating. A movie I love watching over and over again.
I love how its impossible to figure out the decade. It has aspects from 60s-90s. The rotary phones everywhere are great.
There are many memorable lines/moments in this film.
They even mentioned president Nixon in this movie (one of Resnick's scenes)
Yeah, that was one of the interesting quirks of the movie. It certainly gave off '70s vibes, but could have been early '80s, too. Excellent movie with great writing and pacing.
@@WobblinGoblin1 And the limo he was driving to pick up the kid at the boxing match was a late 80s Town Car. ‘87-89.
Mel kicked ass in this movie
Nice review, man. Came here to see an honest review of Payback and got what I wanted. However, I do recommend you check out the director's cut. I just watched it and it's a completely different movie than what I'm seeing right here. Kris Kristofferson isn't even in the Director's Cut but I do think that version is superior. Either way, great review
Thanks! This theatrical version is the only one I've ever seen. I saw it when it was in theaters as a kid (my dad took me to everything) and this is the only dvd version I've ever had. Sounds like I really need to check out Helgeland's cut.
One of my TOP 3 Mel Gibson movies......totally under-rated.
"I promise you won't have to find out what you're left ball tastes like"
That's just mean, man!
Ok
I did not really see anything that was so horrible about that line.
Neither did I. The lines he pointed out were perfectly fine.
It is so noir, so funny, and the writing is so good, it's hard not to love it.
One of my favorite movies ever. Best mel Gibson movie next to lethal weapon.
Next to mad max
@@detomasopantera1966 next to Braveheart
This is a remake of the 1967 movie "Point Blank" with Lee Marvin.
That walk…
I'm not sure that is an accurate way of putting it. Both are based on a novel.
@@wet-read
U obviously haven't watched both movies.
@@motorcitymanman7711
Yes I have. My point was it wasn't simply a remake of the earlier movie because they both come from other source material. Just like the TV version of the Shining isn't a remake of the movie so much as another adaptation of the book of the same name.
Great film and a great review, my favourite line from the film where Fairfax said "Man that just mean that's mean man!"
The way he says it just makes that one great.
It's one of my favorite catch-phrases of all time.
(6:20) Nah, you're way too hard on the romance entry. She is what rescues him from the abyss.
at that time , he was my man for a MAX PAYNE movie...
Lutz Rieken rather gibson play max payne than that other guy
Fucking walburger ruined max Payne for me. I mean the fn cringe in his acting is unbearable.
Wasn't it supposed to be a re make of Point Blank? Another classic.
Bravo. It is.
They're both adapted from the same book
Val's wallet line is one of the best... I catch myself saying it all the time to people🤣
You absolutely cracked me up with the Kris Kristofferson stuff. I was dying, One of my all time favorite movies. Great review
-So Boil an egg-. Mel Gibson
Not the Syndicate. The Outfit.
Hey--2019 might be the time to start revising your reviews--the directors cut of Payback throws alot of your criticisms out the window, especially in regards to casting. Just a suggestion if you are still functioning.
I think I'm going to have to buy this I didn't know it existed (although I never really looked lol)
@@mopartron3030 the directors cut is awful. Totally different movie. Would love to listen to someone compare the two. Also explains the drama between the director and the studio.
From a book by Richard Stark. He has a whole series with Porter, or Parker actually. For some reason they changed his name for the movie.
They changed his name because Donald Westlake would only allow a film adaptation to use the Parker name if they were going to adapt all the books, not just one. His estate changed this for the 2013 Parker film.
@@MichaelDavis-bj2bs interesting. Thanks. What was the 2013 film?
@@muchoed5119 It's called Parker. Jason Statham plays Parker and it's based on the Flashfire novel.
Mel Gibson wanted to make a Charles Bronson movie, and he did just that.
Man, you missed a lot of the meat of this flick. The reason this film is so one note and different from the writer/director's other movies is because Mel Gibson decided he didn't like it, waved his Braveheart Oscar around to bully a first time director, and went back and reshot scenes and shot a whole new ending. The kristofferson character was originally a woman, and it ended with a shootout at a train station. Also, you should check out Point Blank, the movie this was based on. I haven't read the book, so I can't really speak on that.
What's wrong with one note?? The dark and serious version is fucking boring and unrelatable without Mel or Porter's voice over. The experienced Mel Gibson knows what makes a movie effective and timeless... unlike some first-time director. And even more so than this critic.
Luke M Hear hear! I freakin LOVE this movie, it's the ultimate guy flick for me. Never fails to make a shitty day better EVERY time. I think it's the format, he gets his ass kicked in the beginning but then pretty much slowly climbs all the way back nonstop till the end. The 'only 70 thou' thing KILLS me every time too.
ghostdog2041 The director’s version with the woman as the head of The Syndicate is weak sauce.
@@LukeLovesRose -- THE DIFFERENCE . . . | is that Gibson's version is for sensitive suburbanites, whilst the Helgeland version is for mature adults in The City of Chicago.
Then Mel does Get the Gringo. Payback in mexico.
I disagree with you about Kristopherson. I like him too. Seen it a dozen times.
They’re no good guys in the whole movie…..I like that!
u see me reaching for my fuckin wallet lol my fav line too
So great!
LMFAO, that guy almost stole the film.
Really enjoyed your review!
Thanks! I wish I had time to put more of these together.
This film is a loose remake of John Boorman's Point Blank with Lee Marvin, who played a character called Walker, hence the Gibson character being Porter.
Which are all based on a pulp novel called "The Hunter" written by Richard Stark (Donald Westlake), the first in a series of novels about a career criminal with the single name of "Parker".
always been 1 of my favourite ever films
Carter's death scene was probably the worst death acting ever. Lol!
Mel Gibson does revenge well.
Still love this movie! 🍿 🎥
You are weird!
It's a top five Mel Gibson movie. It's was fast pace with a story line . I've watched it about seven or eight times.
Mel says 70,000,its 70,000.
Payback was a great movie. To this day my toes are still deathly afraid of hammers.
You said that right😮
They should be afraid of snakes!
I was only 8 years old when this movie came out but I remember my grandpa buying it on VHS when it was released in stores and watching it with me, talk about one cool-ass action movie to watch with your grandpa, we both LOVED it and it's one of my all-time faves. RIP Grampop thanks for the memories... OH YEAH and shout out for all the classic Mopars ('68 Road Runner and '68 Charger!!) and other muscle cars in the film, just another finishing touch that adds to the raw gritty feel.
Sounds like he had great taste!
how did he explain the leather wearing hooker to a 8 year old???
@@19brittani he probably skipped ahead and/or I already knew by then from watching other action movies it was just 'weird sex stuff'.
@@mopartron3030 lucy liu was hot AF. FISHNETS BLACK PANTYHOSE...
If u like payback go get cell block 99!
Very tough to buy Vince Vaughn as a brawler but I may give it a look. Thanks!
One note? One note??!
How DARE you
This review is for the inferior theatrical version, the one most people are familiar with.
I like the movie I like the reviews I think the movie was very good and mail was on his top
Mel Gibson not mail in the movie payback it was good.
Very fair review.....
You do realize this is a remake of Point Blank.
No did not! I will definitely give that a viewing. Thanks so much for providing!
Fuck what anyone says; K.K. calling buddy, "a fuckin' nipplehead." in Blade 2 is cinematic gold.
"Before his reputation went in the crapper?" Really? He went on to make Passion of Christ & Apocalypto.
No mention of it being a remake which is odd. Check out the OG with Lee Marvin ... you won't be disappointed.
There's that, but even more pressing is that there is the actual version of Payback as it was originally intended.
Here's why I think everybody is saying hubba hubba in this movie ready okay
James Coburn who has the lead in this movie was in an episode of Combat called Masquerade. He played a German soldier who spoke English and whose mission is to infiltrate sabotage and murder as many Allied soldiers and their offices as he can.
He learned his English watching American Cinema as so many World War II characters seemed to do.
As Kanga, it seemed that every third thing he said was hubba hubba he used to this hurry up let's get a move on when Sergeant Saunders squad are just chilling playing cards playing cards for instance.
So maybe it's an homage . maybe it's an inside joke nod to Coburn
So Riley O'Reilly Hollywood Insider saying Hubba Hubba.C u later
🍦🍉👍
Where are MEN Today With These BALLZ and Principles? Another Classic Like The Movie FALLING DOWN. One of the Last Real Films Ever Made. 😎
Payback is old school Noir.
1 of my top 10 favorite.
I agree with 4 stars out of 5. My favorite scene is when Porter tries to imitate the ID card of the guy he just pickpockets. As a matter of fact I like the whole opening sequence.
I gave your review a thumbs down.
Despite it's weaknesses, Payback is a much stronger film than your review is a review.
Maria Bello, my favorite lesbian.
Damn shes a lesbian??
Well....wouldnt mind her and Debra Unger going at it!!
Well.. rumour has it that Gibson did some reshoots himself in order to make himself more likable. I'd like to see Helgeland's director's cut.
You are supposed to be a movie lover and you don’t even know that Brian Helgeland has nothing to do with the Kris Kristofferson role. It wasn’t even in the movie. Then the studio asked him to change the movie cos Mel Gibson is so brutal in the original picture, he refused, they replaced him and totally reshot the third act. In the original porter dies, he doesn’t get the money and the dog dies too. You can get the original directors cut, it’s on the fucking DVD. I suggest you spend 10 minutes researching before you spout your opinions.
“Bello plays a prostitute Porter’s gone soft for”. Lol dude, I think it’s totally the opposite if you know what I mean?
wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more...
Just sent this on dvd to my old boss My old job short changed me £80 made me think of this film ....get your shit fucked up for some small change just pay what you owe ....oh well
MEL is one of the last stars in Hollywood. Great Actor and Great Director and zero percent woke.
Have you seen the directors cut? It's a completely different movie.
Better, too.
Couldn't make such movies today... A few years from now they all will be banned
If you seen payback I cant believe the mistake they made mel Gibson goes threw the windshield when the Chinese run him over when they back out the windshield is new lol check it out?
A remake of Point Blank with Lee Marvin another Hollywood legend.
A movie with only bad people in it and I fucking love it.
Fuck Mel Gibson but this is a good movie
I give it a 10 out of 5 in my review! Still to get the directors cut edition!
This kid actually called the Last Jedi awesome...let that insanity sink in.
It was a prequel to "Sin City".
If you steal $70,000 from me, Im going to be pissed.
One of my favorites! That's just mean man, it's mean!
In this film every body was doing very good, bad guy looks badly, the director was doing wonderful jobs ,like it 👍😂
How is 100 minutes short for a film? Jesus, what are you on
One of the worst films I've ever seen Lucy Liu is hot though
He just wants his 130 grand back.
Good movie, but the Directors cut is infinitely better.
he doing miracles too and cured criple on the floor
It's not called the syndicate it's called the outfit.... Man I maybe watched this great movie once too often ;)
Nah.
I had watched the movie in the movie theatre in 1999 watched it again and got confused. I learned that the version I watched today was the director's cut from 2006, which has many scenes in common, but a lot was missing and other scenes were added. Kris Kristofferson for example did not appear at all in the version of 2006. Even the music and the colour grading was different than in the original.
I might watch the original version again tomorrow to be able to compare both of them, but from what I remember, I liked the original more. Maybe because it had a more satisfying ending and no killed dog.
I like the director's cut more. I hated the kidnapping element, the first person narration was not necessary, the struggle mentioned by the crooked detectives was never seen, the blue tint was not as nice as the rich colors, and the soundtrack was emotional and tonal spoonfeeding.
It's his money if happens to me you better hide
Everyone's a phucking critic
val's best line was "they don't feel pain like we do." great movie, mediocre, smarmy, self-absorbed review.
it makes my top 10 purely on this character.so gritty.gritty character, griity shot.
dirty. awesome narrative.
I gotta fish called Porter - evil little shit .
Shut up I cured you didn't I. 😆😍
Porter does not have a heart of gold.
good review but I don’t agree about your points about the romance & the torture scene… they were both brilliant scenes
Which torture scenes?
You really dramatic to review a movie
And a great comedy too, had me laughing quite often.
there are two versions- the longer version is better with Mel doing voice over than director version imho
Hubba-hubba-hubba!
The entire book series is actually really good and Gibson has always been a perfect casting in my min's eye. I still wish they'd have kept going and made the second book, The Man With The Getaway Face.
The movie is awesome
