I used to sing this song to my first long term partner. She brought our son into world but tragically she died 5 years later. This was the last song played at her funeral. Hands down the saddest day of my entire life. Every now and then I come back to this beautiful song and think of her and times we shared. Life is a truly incredible experience.. both the good and bad. I'm grateful for both of those extremes, because as much as its hurts to look back and remember.. It does remind me that I was lucky enough to experience something as precious as the love expressed within this song.

I’m 57 years old. I love music and I had known the fist line and tune of this song for most of my life but never listened to the whole thing until just recently. This is an incredible love song written by a legendary studio pianist/artist named Leon Russel. As I heard Leon sing it himself I thought, it’s beautiful but I wanted to hear it sung with a little more traditional flow. Donny really did it justice here. Thanks for sharing. Music is such a great expression of life. Leon’s words and music came together here.
Donny Hathaway may not be as famous and best-selling as Stevie, Marvin, Sam Cooke or even Ray Charles. But Donny's soulful voice reaches deep.

Fell back in love with this song after hearing it again on Euphoria. After seeing that show, I realized there was a reason the song was put in there. Donny was a guy with issues just like Rue and all the others in the show. This song really held deep with Donny cause it described who he was as a person and what he wants to say to everyone he loved, his fans included. I just heard a young man sing this at his mother's homecoming and this young came extremely close to Donny singing it . OMG I'm a let it go here but that young man did something remarkable and that's one of the only times I give props to someone singing their version of someone else's song . I think it must have been around 4 days after my mum passed away, I heard this song through my headphones. She passed while we were not in communication with one another, long story short - the relationship was toxic. I had mixed feelings ... feelings of deep sadness but mostly anger, because I felt like I had tried so hard to fix things but it was never successful. The last time I had played this song, I played it for my mother because I wanted her to hear how amazing it was ... turns out she already knew it, then she began to sing it to me in the garden. When I heard this song, I already knew it was her - "I treated you unkindly, but darling can't you see ..." then the song continued. I have never been so sure of contact from beyond the grave as I was with this song.

In my opinion, this is the most romantic and soulful love song ever sang. Many years ago I was told that Donny committed suicide shortly thereafter.
My heart broke into a million pieces. I sat down in front of my iMac computer and chose to listen to his creation on a loop. I chose the old iTunes visualizer, turned off all the light and began my grief process. I sat there for about an hour and couldn’t help having concern for his soul. My eyes were transfixed on the screen. The random images were so beautiful as they moved and changed as the song continued. Now I am going to share something I Know for a fact I had a spiritual awakening. Suddenly I saw Donny at peace laying still upon the floor. Hovering over his body was a heavenly host with wings that spanned further than the length of the body. At first it frightened me but then a feeling of love peace and comfort overcame me. From that point I knew he was at peace as my fear and grief was lifted immediately. Now this is a true story. Take what you wish….. I hope you find comfort as I did. I am now 65 years old and the memory has never changed. Thank you Alma
