"A Song for You" is a song written and originally recorded by rock singer and pianist Leon Russell for his first solo album Leon Russell, which was released in 1970 on Shelter Records. A slow, pained plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover, the tune is one of Russell's best-known compositions. Russell not only sings and plays piano on the recording, but also plays the tenor horn that is accompanying. It has been performed and recorded by over 200 artists, spanning many musical genres. Elton John has called the song an American classic.Merry Clayton in 1971, Carmen McRae in 1972, also in 1972, on June 22, 1972, The Carpenters released “ A Song for You” signed with the Record Production Company of; A & M Studios, in Los Angeles, and ranked Number 26, in 1972, on the Billboard Charts. Aretha Franklin in 1974 as well as Donny Hathaway and the Temptations have recorded highly acclaimed renditions. One of the first versions of the song that brought it broader attention was by Andy Williams, whose single peaked at number 29 on the adult contemporary chart and number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971 Ray Charles recorded a version that earned him the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
On January 17, 2018, "A Song for You" was added to Grammy Hall of Fame.

My dad died a few days ago, day after Christmas, and I can't stop listening to this song.
I’m sorry !! My dad a few days after New Years last year and before his birthday. I was only 20 and I feel like my own world is shattered. I was more closer with my dad and he was a little more patient and understanding towards me than others. I just want him to be able to have him hug me again or come back home through the front door. It’s been over a year and some people have said I am kinda being “emotional” with the way I’m coping about it, but others have said that’s just them being ignorant and insulting because people handle grief differently!!
Everyone grieves differently I lost my dad a few years ago I think of him every day he was my hero but I know he’s looking down over us saying keep on doing what you do and don’t give up Continue to Rest In Paradise Dad we love & miss you no more suffering 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️

ANYONE ... would have been there that day to grab Donnie, to urge him to come away from the window, to tell him how much he was loved by so many, to beg him to just give it one more day, to tell him about the huge hole he would leave in the Universe if he were to leave us before his time. Surely not then, not that way.
The pivotal, the absolutely best rendition. Mr. Hathaway squeezed every meaning, every emotion out of that song that could ever be found, nothing left for the remaining singers to render, so sit back, shut up and learn from the master. Learn to sing.
Excellent cover, but I prefer the original with Leon singing. It's such a great song that it is hard to screw up, so there are many really good versions of it out there.
Kodi Lee from American Idol was great. So sit back, shut up, and learn acceptance of all versions.
