    The plastic material used in the pen tips of the Surface Pen are actually conductive and I suspect designed to inductively couple the signal between the active coil deep inside the pen tip and the digitizer pickups embedded below the display to give more accurate positioning when pen is tilting.
    [if you remove the tip and replace it with something non-conductive hovering is not detected over the screen, but a sewing pin inserted where the tip was and hovering position is tracked on screen ... just careful not to scratch up your screen doing the experiment!]

    I had the same thing happen my my surface pen. Ruled out anything Bluetooth / driver etc as my wife has the exact same computer. The problem followed just the pen (body/tip)
    Watched the same video and figured mine got static from the dry Canadian winters. Note to self don’t use the pen while chilling watching movies before bed.
    Took it apart. I used a lot of force to get glue “loose” so my barrel is intact.
    Still haven’t figured out where the MOV is but then again I didn’t spend much time researching the board and components.

    Thanks a ton, even if the pictures aren't as clear as I could use. This is my first experience with tech that is absolutely hostile to repair, and it makes no sense that they'd butcher the design so mangling the cap is the only way to remove it.
    your pictures seem to show the copper antenna wrapped around the metal of the internal pointer but I don't seem to have that. in the process of opening it, that internal pointer also shattered so the piece of seperated, and I'm trying to confirm if that antenna fell out as a result. There's one straight copper looking piece next to the antenna wrapped around?

      Take a look at the blog post in the description, also Konstantin Sackhov's video also in the description. Not sure if they will help. The Pro 4 and the 2017 pen look quite different internally, so it also depends on the pen that you have.

    Do you have any idea whether there's any sensor that could go bad on the screen? Touchscreen (with fingers) on my surface book work just fine, but none of the tips of the pen are detected (proximity or touching the screen). All of my searches point that the pen is detected by the fingerprint sensor array, but it used to show a dot also when coming to the proximity of the screen, so I'm thinking something else might have failed. The top button works fine anyway, and the surface app shows 92% of battery.

      Its not the screen unfortunately. It's the pen. Try a known working pen and it should work OK.

    I have a strange problem with the pen which I found some people also encountered in the Microsoft support page. Every once in a while when I take out the pen and start writing, the screen turn off and turn on again the moment the pen tip touches the screen. After that I can use the pen normally. Do you have any ideas how to fix this?

    Exactly what happened to my surface pen. I contacted Microsoft for replacement along with my Surface Pro 5 but somehow the ordered got expired due to some unknown problems with appointed courier company by Microsoft at my region. When I tried to create new order for replacement, the pen warranty already expired. Unlucky me

      Sorry but this post makes no sense and sounds like something you made it up.
      1. "contacted MS for replacement along with my SP5"
      2. "ordered got expired due to some unknown problems with appointed courier company by MS"

    @oztabletpc This has happened to me twice now and you kindly linked me to this video. Thanks! Do you know of a third party pen or surface pen that won’t have this issue? I think the large amount of static recently in my environment can be attributed to the dry winter weather and my wearing a large coat that is prone to static charge. I just need a pen that will consistently work and I’m not too concerned about price as long as it isn’t ridiculous $75+. I worry about going third party because of possible software blocks and bugs but I think that’s likely more of an Apple issue. Many thanks!

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  2 роки тому

      3rd party pens are fine and may or may not fix the issue. Very small electronics of all kinds will struggle to deal with 30,000+ Volts. Remember this is much smaller than a phone or a tablet, with less area to distribute static electric shock. If that's consistently happening, you need to deal with that too.
      The best option for 3rd part pens to try would be the pens from Renaisser. It's worth a try. Video and links here ua-cam.com/video/-ieMJ0QA124/v-deo.html

      @@oztabletpc do you think the slim pen 2 would be better protected?

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  2 роки тому

      I can't say for sure, it's too early... But the new pens are plastic. Not sure if that will stop transmission of static. It haven't cracked one open yet, and I haven't seen enough of them to find a failed example. No doubt the electronics have been upgraded quite a bit, so they may be more resilient too.

      I also have a Wacom Bamboo Ink that can work with 2 types of digitizers from Wacom. Bought it for Lenovo Yoga (where the Surface Pen does not work), but also works on Surface Go if I use the mode switch on stylus (2 buttons pressed until a light flashes).
      Bad points:
      1. I don't know if it will fail the same way
      2. Does not have magnetic points to stick to the Surface Go.

    Its a much better device than the unfixable apple pencil which can completely die if you leave its battery flat for a few weeks.

      Yes, but teenage UA-camrs say having a digital pen that needs to be recharged frequently and recharges awkwardly is somehow superior to having a battery that you only need to replace once a year.
