  • Over the years I've tried lots of Surface Pen alternatives. And I'd almost given up... Until now! This is the first Surface Pen alternative that I'd consider superior to the Surface Pen for note taking.

Precisely the content I was looking for as I'm trying to figure out which new pen to get for my new Microsoft Surface Go 3 that's on the way. Thank you for the concise, thorough, realistic commentary. I am admittedly super envious of your giant Surface Studio!!

Happy Renaisser user here too, it's a lot cheaper than the new Surface Pen and the side eraser button makes a lot more sense for note taking. I'm glad it exists because it means other companies want to get into the Surface ecosystem. Hopefully it will make pen-enabled tablets more common.

I just bought a Rena 520 and can't wait to use it! Personally the reasons you didn't like it are what I liked about it. The fact that I have to turn it on to use it only serves as a reminder to myself that it's truly a stylus and not just some random pen I picked up from around the clinic! You see; I'll be using this device along with my new surface Pro 7 Plus at work while taking notes, jotting down memo's and information about patients that I need to have in order to complete my internship and a lot of the pens used in clinic look similar to these... They don't have buttons of course. Lol. Thanks for making this review and ultimately saving me $70.00 +.

I am very curious about this pen. I like the fact it has tilt and I'm loving the idea of an eraser button. I find flipping the surface pen 180 very slow and can send it spinning across the room 😂. I like how it's cheaper than the Surface pen and I'm curious about the software included. Thanks for the review!

I like how the eraser tool works when using GoodNotes with the Apple pencil on the iPad. The way GoodNotes works, you can set it up so that you tap an icon on the screen to switch to the eraser, erase what you want, and then it automatically switches back to whatever tool you were using beforehand. So you click the erase icon, erase what you want, and continue. To me it feels very quick and natural, and I miss it when using other applications.
Also, i agree with you, I think it would be awkward to have to turn my pencil around to use the eraser.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your experience with the Surface Pen alternatives. It sounds like you've been on quite the journey to find the right one for your note-taking needs.
The Raphael520 from Renaiza seems intriguing, especially with its magnetic attachment feature and familiar pen tip. Tilt sensitivity might not be your priority, but it's nice to have as an added bonus. However, the need to manually turn it on and charge it could be a bit inconvenient compared to the Surface Pen.
I'd love to hear more about your experience with the Raphael520. How has it been working for you over time? Have you noticed any other pros or cons that you'd like to share? Your insights could be really helpful for others considering this alternative.
Thanks for the recommendation and your honest review! 🖊✨

Great review. I'm not a fan of anything that requires thinking when turning on. Having to explicitly turn on a pen, and having to think about whether it's charged - for a heavy pen user like me, that's a deal breaker. Passive charging (like the Surface Slim Pen) or a replaceable battery that lasts a year (like other Surface pens) are much better.
As for the eraser, I find the eraser button at the back of the Surface Pens to be natural and fast. I don't find I need to be erasing so frequently and with such rapidity that it slows me down. It's also, as you say, "intuitive". If I need a more precise eraser, I'll use the app's UI to select the eraser tool and use the regular pen end of the pen.
Finally, I've become very dependent upon the clicky rear button on the Surface Pen. I launch OneNote, do screen captures and launch Sticky Notes, all using one button attached to my pen. I'm glad the new version of the Renaisser has this, but versions without it would be a no-go for me for this reason alone.

I already had two of them. Now I am going to buy a third one or the surface pen. The problem with my first one was that I dropped it and I lost the button on the back side. Without the button it wasn't chargeable anymore. The second one just stopped working after a year or so.

I just realized while I preferred the top eraser while what you said does make sense... I tend to annotate with the screen in vertical position (well, more like at an angle), not on a table and I just rotate the wrist to erase, not my fingers, which for me is actually faster than looking for a button to press... I never use the pen on an horizontal screen, but if I did the button makes more sense.. By the way I also have some non surface devices that use a button instead... and for the reason I mention I prefer surface...

    • @oztabletpc

Good points, though with the hardware button you learn the feel of it and it eventually becomes muscle memory. Fun fact: The Apple Pencil V2 has a ridiculous implementation of a button eraser.. . It's virtual, with no physical reference and it requires you to let go of the pen to activate. It's so bad ergonomically!

@@oztabletpc Yeah sure, when I used it with my surface pro 3 (which I still have) I got used to it, but I still preferred the new one. Also I like than the new one had only 1 battery and not a separate one for the Bluetooth functions. With my pro 3 and HP X2 elite I use pen loops to have the pen always available... I know about the iPad I have the 11in and hardly ever use the button. Still it's much better than the 1st gen pencil I use with my 2015 12.9 iPad pro and mini 5 (you have it too, if I remember correctly). The new pencil feels much better in terms of size, weight and magnetic connection than gen 1 (I use all my iPads with matte screen protectors that make the pencil feel better). I actually use a screen protector on all my devices, including the Surface Book. Over time I have found a reliable brand that does not compromise the quality of the screen and removes reflections and fingerprints.

In general, the pen works well.
I tried it on different software: 1) in windows WhiteBoard the eraser works too. 2) in Gimp and in Krita the eraser does not work.

The eraser needs to be recognized by the software, so if your software doesn't recognize it you should contact the vendor or developer. And it doesn't look to me like the Raphael 530 supports pen tilt. Again tilt is only recognized in apps that support it. A simple way to test it is in Word with a pencil tool.

  • @sam.merritt

I guess everyone has their own preference, but I much prefer the eraser on the other end of the pen. It's not a matter of efficiency of movement, it's a matter of how much you have to think about it and how fiddly it is. The little button on the side method? That requires you to hold the pin at a certain orientation and when you have fat fingers it's hard not to press that button accidentally, but when you do need to press the button I can't just move a finger, I have to reposition the whole pin. It's sooooo much easier to flip the pin over, erase, flip the pin back, and keep writing.

None of these pens use Bluetooth for pen functions. If you have the right pen, they work immediately.

How do you keep the page from going to landscape when you're in the other direction? This is what keeps me from using my pen. I have the Surface pro6. I love my pen otherwise

Hi Brenda, what app are you using? Do you want to write in Portrait mode - like a notebook?

Use Rotation Lock. It might be available as a button to toggle in Action Center. You can also access it in Settings > Display > Rotation lock

But does it work on Windows 11? My surface pen doesn't work at all so it is now basically a $100 toothpick.

Does the manufacturer advertise active pen support? If not then it is highly unlikely.

Does it work on non-surface & non-apple devices?

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  2 роки тому

Yes, there are many other devices that use the Microsoft Pen Protocol (fromerly known as N-Trig). This pen would work on any of those. A current example is the espresso Portable display that I reviewed recently. ua-cam.com/video/0KINo4tlOmk/v-deo.html

It would work on Surface Duo 1 or 2. This is an active pen, not a touch screen stylus. Most phones do not support active pens.

This Renaisser pen suffers from interference jitter, while the Surface Pen had none, on the the latest Surface devices.

@@JohnSmith-gb8hd hey John, can you share what you are referring to? I am in direct contact with the Renaisser people so if you can define the problem in more detail I can see if it's a defective stylus or if it's something that can be improved

Please be aware that the Renaisser pen suffers from random interference jitter, while the Surface Pen has none on recent Surface devices like the SP7.
I had to reluctantly go back to the Surface Pen, since I really liked to have 2 side buttons.

0:55 was that engineer being disingenuous and self-aggrandising, or were they just woefully ignorant when they had no reason to be?
As Wacom have had erasers/rubbers on the backs of quite a few of their digital pens for many years now.

That's true, we were using them on Wacom Penabled devices 20 years ago. But you have to acknowledge that the design is far more pencil eraser like than Wacom ever was...
