The song is about the wisdom and insight of old age. The old man is disappointed by the young man throwing a stone into the water, and says that only when the water is smooth, you will be able to see how many fairy tales you have left, and then you will ask for salvation. A possible interpretation of this is old people's understanding of themselves and the secrets of life, as opposed to the chaotic lives of the young. Only when you are in the world can you see what it is. As soon as the old man (representing the older generation) dies, the young man will become older and wiser, and will take over the old man's job - keeping the water/life smooth. In a sense, this is the cycle of life.
jeez, Sehnsucht is 25th years old now...Man, I'm old lol, cheers for this Rick, years since I heard this, on ideas for your two song vids, how about 'Seeman' and the cover by Nina Hagan/Apocalyptica ? its one of my fav's
This song is about an old man waiting for the afternoon breeze to come and smooth the water. Every day he works with a fan to achieve this contemplative calm. A young spectator notices the old man and throws a stone into the water, causing it to ripple. The old man looks sadly at the young spectator and uses his fan to return the water to its former calm state. The young spectator notices the old man's effort and finally plucks up the courage to ask him why he is working so tirelessly. The old man replies that the water should be a mirror and that it is only when it is calm that you can see your true reflection and the desires that are still in your heart. Ultimately, this song encourages us to take time to pause and reflect on our lives, to look for the things we need to find peace and to seek liberation. 😓😓😓 This song has so many metaphors. Too bad this song was only played live once or twice on the "Sehnsucht-Tour" 97'
For me, the song is about a built-up image towards others, “the old man”, which has nothing to do with one's true nature. A small mistake, a stone in the water, can destroy this false image.
Your reaction your emotion you talk to your follovers you not afraid to show yourself . And you listning to your follovers , Thats what i meant Rick. And you are always nice and humble. Thank you for being You. 🌹👍🏻🤘🏼😁
It's so odd that people suggest these relatively obscure songs when you haven't even done some of their official video hits like Zick Zack, Auslander and Adieu.

I love this song a lot but even I (as a German native) have problems understanding the story behind the lyric...but hey, it's Rammstein 😉😂
da geb ich dir absolut recht. es gibt wie immer mehr als eine interpretation, was es nicht gerade einfacher macht

Especially in this song, I hear Clawfinger-riffs from start to finish.
