The "Coming Soon...ish" thing was clever. Cruel, but clever.
***** In my mind, I interpret it as a sort of weird mix between breaking the fourth wall and rubbing salt on our wounds. It's like Mofftiss is saying, "Hey, we know that the wait is damn long, but we can't do anything about it! Sorry!" And I know it's due to Mofftiss' workload with Sherlock and Doctor Who coupled with scheduling between the increasingly famous cast, but it's still a damn long wait. I've actually been asked by friends turned converts (because yes, we are sort of a cult if you think about it) why the show's producers make us wait so long. One even asked if it was a test of fans' loyalty to the show, which is kind of accuate in a way because only those who liked it enough will wait eagerly however long it takes. But then again, what's not to like, right?
I love the choice to incorporate the original Sherlock setting into the series. I am thoroughly excited for what is to come!
The framing of the opening shot and the music is a tribute to Jeremy Brett's Holmes, how lovely!
+NiCoDeimus I'm hoping we'll see a few more references to the Brett series throughout the special.
I would love to see a complete season in this time setting based on the more popular stories from the books!

Wow, that subtle reference to the classic Sherlock Holmes TV series theme in the opening notes of the trailer. That's masterful hommage right there. Kudos to who put that together, hopefully it features in the actual special.
After modern Sherlock Holmes came, the legendary sociopathic pro-phone-user Holmes, the classic became kinda boring and just feels plain TBH.

The really funny thing is I actually watched this after the series ended, so seeing Mary again was quite a welcome surprise

So, This is finally coming! Waited for years and a 1 minute and 22 seconds. Brilliant BBC as always.
This first look reminds me of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes intro" (Granada). I mean even the music from the beginning... No one else noticed that? I think it is a nice detail for the veterans. Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job but Jeremy Brett still is unrivaled as Sherlock Holmes.

Lynda Botez It helps that the framing device of the original stories is that Watson writes them and sells them to magazines, so the novellas actually exist in the world of the show.

+Grim Grin In the books, Watson is publishing their adventures, so it isn't really breaking the fourth wall in the books. It's just referring to the fact that Watson is writing a book, I think. He doesn't say anything related to the fact that they are fictional characters.

I think it's grand that they are going retro on the whole thing, i hope it's only once though because i really enjoy the modern versions. I don't want just one a year, would like to see them do 3 every year, heaven knows there are enough books for them to latch onto
