- Memorable scence from series 1 of Sherlock in which Doctor Watson meets an intimidating man at a warehouse, who seems to know all about him. Great HD clip from Sherlock, starring Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch.

I love when Mycroft says "You're not haunted by the war, you miss it"
So do I. I'm not haunted by Iraq, I miss it.
@@deltausmc8366 Iraq sure doesn't miss you, fellow.
@@stepanserdyuk4589 Nice.
Yep, this is real PTSD - when you in fact miss the war.
@@Egill2011 Or perhaps when service has just changed you so much you feel like war makes more sense to you than soft civvie life.
That moment when we all thought Mycroft was Moriarty
Exactly! I literally thought Mycroft was Moriarty, but until Sherlock said that he was his brother.
+Jasmine Corpin In fact I asked myself in all the first episode "is he Mycroft or Moriarty?" It was driving me mad until the "it will upset Mommy" and I was "oohhhh"
I'm glad. I thought I was the only one.
Honestly the umbrella should have given him away.
Nah. It was totally done that way on purpose by the makers of the show.
I remember when I first saw the episode I was pretty sure this was Moriarty (he behaved so much like canonical Moriarty). when I rewatch it now, I can't help admiring Mark Gattis' acting skills
I thought it was Moriarty too! Glad to see I wasn't alone.
I love John. I love how he was not intimidated or flustered by Sherlock's "arch-enemy" and brought the sass.
That was his arch enemy I thought it was Mycroft
Jasmine The Fighting Kitty Mycroft said he was Sherlock's arch enemy; John reports it back to Sherlock.
''Met a friend of yours.''
''A friend?''
''An enemy.''
''Oh. Which one?''
''You're arch enemy, according to him. Do people have arch enemies?''
''Did he offer you money to spy on me?''
''Yes.''
''Did you take it?''
''No.''
+ᏰᏗşιℓ "Pity, we could have split the fee, think it through next time."
Exactly the moment where I fell in love with this John. He's the strongest characterisation of Dr. Watson that I've ever seen.
I love him so much!
I was almost convinced he was Moriarty, respect to Andrew Scott, but Mark Gatiss is also very talented at being slightly evil.
When I first watched this, and I hadn't seen or read anything Sherlock Holmes related in over 25 years, I thought Gatiss' character was a villain as well. Very well played. Yes, Mark Gatiss is very talented.
I think the director did this on purpose :)
Well Steven Moffatt wrote the script, so he's the one to blame really haha
My friend, when I asked him for a name, said, “M.” Not knowing the name Mycroft and knowing the name Moriarty, I thought this was going to be a new take on Moriarty, a nicer but still evil version. I’m glad I was wrong.
"Welcome back."
That was defenitely one of the scariest scenes in that episode and this line...it gave me the creeps. Gatiss IS good, isn't he? I mean, his acting is really good and I bow to him and Moffat for the marvellous writing.
I love this scene... It's so creepy. For those that already knew the Sherlock Holmes characters it was a bit like "Did we just meet Moriarty or Mycroft?"
I was expecting Mycroft to appear as a softie like an accountant first, before we see his real face. So I was convinced this was Moriarty lol
Sherlock is self-destructive, Mycroft looks out for him. Mycroft is the smarter brother, and he knows how to get along with society, Sherlock doesn't... or doesn't care.
In the season 3 final, Mycroft admits this. He loves his baby brother, through the entire series he has been looking out for Sherlock.
+Gabri'el Alexander Love is human error.
Gabri'el Alexander That's... what Sherlock says...?
+Got Back in the Kitchen
ah
+Gabri'el Alexander I don't think Mycroft knows really how to get along with society. Because he doesn't really mingle in there. He sees himself above it at bit (not in a psycho way, just because he is smarter an deals with bigger things). But he sure does know how to make sure he fits in/isn't noticeable in society...
Sherlock can't/doesn't want to do that indeed. But that may also be because he always had a smarter big brother to compete against, so he does want attention...
hahahha indeed, Microft doesn´t like weddings, Sherlock told Microft about wedding, and he said no. He is smarter because he has goal higher than Sherlock. Sherlock is always in competition with Microft because he is jeaulos of him. I think so.
This is the scene that honestly sold the show's premise to me - a wonderfully contained John Watson under pressure and a charismatic yet honest Mycroft. The characters have evolved beautifully yet retained their core essences in three series.
"You are not haunted by the war, you miss it."-- we should have known John was indeed addicted to a certain lifestyle years ago .
Brilliant writing. Explains why Watson puts up with Holmes. He loves The Game, too. Holmes realized that out right away. "I said dangerous and here you are."
We were told all along, but we didn't listen.
This clearly shows the writers aren't randomly making shit up as they go like many other shows do.
They have a very detailed plan... and they keep fooling us about it! XD
It makes second viewings so much more fun!
See, that's something that really caught my attention, back in His Last Vow.
It really made me question if John was actually atracted to Mary in the first place:
Like, when Sherlock, John and Mary have That Conversation, Sherlock tells him "you're addicted to a certain life-style", as if it were some big reveal.
But we already knew that. Mycroft knew, Sherlock knew, and John knew that, too! John was *very* aware of that. That's why all his relationships kept failing, like with Sarah.
EVEN SARAH HERSELF, WHEN THEY FIRST MET, told him "wouldn't this be too mundane for you?" And later John refferred to that interview as if it had been about her. And it was true, it had been too mundane for him.
Even in John's blog, by the time he and Sarah broke up, he wrote that it was clear to him that his life-style of crime-fighting with Sherlock was not compatible with long term relationships.
By the time His Last Vow happenned, he already knew that!
So why did he look so deeply hurt, and so *angry* about Mary's deceit? (Despite the obvious betrayal of shooting his best friend and actually killing him for a while, knowing *full well* how his death had devastated John the first time)
He even looked miserable the day he proposed to her, to the point Mrs Hudson asumed he was terminally ill! XD (but I digress)
So what was the point of all that? Why was John so furious with *her* that time?
If he believed she was "normal" until that point, and he knew he was attracted to dangerous people, but he still chose Mary "because she *wasn't* supposed to be like that", then he already knew it wouldn't end up well. He CONCIOUSLY CHOSE HER BECAUSE OF THAT. (?)
So, then, he chose her because he thought that would be safer? That a Safe Person like Sarah or Jeanette wouldn't hurt him? In wich case, did he even love her at all?
Cause their relationship didn't really change after he found out about who she really was. He didn't behave more passionate and open with her, or looked happier than before he found out.
In fact, when he found out, he even looked as if he hated her! At first, he did 't even call her "his wife", just "the woman he married, who's lied to him since he'd met her, and who's *carrying* his child". Not even "the mother of his child". And that glare he gave her after Sherlock collaped on the floor was utterly chilling!
He took over six months to even speak to her again! (And it's funny, cause Steven Moffat said in the commentary of His Last Vow, that we only "buy it" about Mary, because watched those scenes out of order)
And the words John "thought long and hard about, and chose very carefully" actually feel really ambiguous... And even after "forgiving her", he said he was still very bloody pissed at her, and it would show.
But also, even Mary herself, acording to Sherlock, was "bored of being The Doctor's Wife", and never showed a single trace of regret, or shame about her "dark past" (only afraid of John leaving her), until she was shot.
And then, somehow, said all she'd ever wanted was "a peaceful, normal life". Like... what???
So, was she bored or does she want a simple life? ...WICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WE KNOW JOHN WANTS.
Or was she.. just lying? What reason could she have to lie about that?
Why couldn't the both of them have dangerous adventures together? What was the point of forcing John into a civil life at all, when Mary was very much aclimatized to violence as well?
What did she really want?
And why did John have to be so unhappy in their marriage (having war dreams only a month after the wedding, and apparently spending too much time on his blog, on his own honeymoon), instead of having it be a happy, romantic reveal, when he found out who she really was?
Why portray Mary so villanous (and still hurting John), only to have her be a normal, loving wife at the very end?
It doesn't make sense, and this scene here proves that the writing and forshadowing is very detailed and consistent.
So I can only guess she lied (as she's known to do, like, a lot) , and all those loose ends are coming back later next season... or she just randomly changed her mind, offscreen, after having Rosie or something... and changed it again when her coleage came back, and again right before getting shot.
???
@@wandanemer2630 nigga, wut?!
I LOVE John's twitches when Mycroft mentions his PTSD. This scene is brilliantly played by both actors, Martin knocks it out of the park.
When I first watched this, the way Mycroft described himself as Sherlock's "archenemy" had me assuming that he was Moriarty. Sherlock saying that he was the most dangerous man in the world seemed to confirm this... until the end of the episode when they are talking about their mother.
Amber Rizzi, lol! True. “Mummy”. I love how they both know what each other is capable of.
Mycroft in this scene.......pure power......Gatiss has played him to the T
You're not haunted by the war, Dr. Watson. You miss it. Welcome back.
And yet, he married Mary... *because* "she wasn't supposed to *be* like that." (???)
No wonder he was having war dreams, not a month after the wedding.
when i first watched this I remember thinking "ooh i don't like him he's nasty" but now I love him so much !:D
I just love this portrayal of Mycroft! Great acting by Mark Gattis!
Whats with me ? :( :)
I love this scene between the two. Each trying to get the upper hand. Mycroft by insults and veiled threats; Watson by remaining cool. Watson seems to be winning - droll, amusing comebacks - until Mycroft brings up details of John's sessions with his therapist. It's Watson's first sign of fear. Mycroft sees that he's getting to him, then Watson starts recovering. Only to see Mycroft walk off triumphantly. Self-declared victory.
Probably in my top 5 favourite Sherlock scenes of all six episodes so far.
I don't understand why I love Mycroft so much...I seriously love him
For me, he is very difficult to understand. I really do not get him and certainly do not love him.
+Chitra Sahai but that is what is so alluring to me, he is a character that can figure someone out so quickly yet is so hard for onlookers to deduce him
This man has the coolest umbrella/walking stick I’ve ever seen. Along with that walk. Call me a fanboy but I respect that
One of my favourite scenes from the first episode. Brilliantly played by both Freeman and Gatiss!
"You're not haunted by the war, Dr. Watson. You miss it"
is my favourite line of the entire show.
This is probably the first moment I realized how amazing this show is. Brilliant writing, and the acting is simply excellent.
Angry/unimpressed John Watson is seriously sexy
Seriously tho.
That scene shower scene in The Sign of Three, when he's so pissed and bosses everyone around is so surprisingly hot...
It's so cool how Mycroft is smarter than Sherlock, but lazier.
Was he always a jerk?
vodkagal28 probably
vodkagal28 Yup. He was always mean to Sherlock when they were children
how is he lazier....
flawless He doesn't like doing any 'legwork'. Plus, it's written in the books.
Chilling scene, superbly performed by both actors, I can even feel how odd would be to confront something like this
"I can tell from your left hand that's not gonna happen."
I can see John think: oh GOD not another one.
What Mycroft says at 1:33 is, in my opinion, the best quote yet from Sherlock!
I think the best is:
"Don't speak out loud, you lower the IQ of the whole street."
I think mine from Mycroft is at the very end with: "Sherlock Homes and Dorctor Watson"
I just makes me happy for some reason. :)
"I'm to take you home... Address?"
"Baker Street... 221 B Baker Street"
I like how John refers to Baker Street as his home already, even when he just met Sherlock a few hours ago.
Mycroft, the protective older brother, made sure of that. :D
His address is actually 177A Bleecker Street
Mycroft is one of my favorite characters in this series. Way too lovable.
I love how, when mycroft says "I can see from your left hand that's not going to happen" you just see John thinking "oh God, not another one like that"
Imagine if Mark Gatiss was Moriarty and Andrew Scott was Mycroft.
Andrew Scott: "Dear Sherly! How are you?" Pffft
+Sledge115 Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the plot twist for season 4.
@@1TrueJuliet I only fucking wish.
Mycroft: He does love to be dramatic.
John: Well thank God you're above all that.
I love John's reaction to Mycroft. xD
Fantastic scene! I bet everyone who first watched it felt sure that was Moriarty - I know I did. One of the best things in the modern adaptation, if you ask me: the greater prominence lent to Mycroft.
I find Mycroft incredibly hot in this scene i just
you're not the only one. His "fire her" gives me chills
He is his most dangerous here....not creepy but plain dangerours.
It's the Power he exudes...
Both smooth and intimidating.
@
Because in men it tends to be more physical, that allude to a desire of a sexual interaction.
In woman, it's more the sexual&sensual mental fantasy/stimulation, rather than the physical.
That's why it's considered less "threatening" and not as objectifying.
She's not seeing him as "hot" physically, but rather how, his presence and how he executed that line, exuded power and confidence.
Nothing about his physical "attributes".
In almost all the Sherlock quizzes I've done I come out as Mycroft...
I take it as a sort of compliment but I have also learned a lot about myself.
I think Mycroft is one of the best characters in the show. And that this particular show made him even better thani in all of the other films/series (I won't say anything about the books because that feels sacrilegious).
The line, brings tears almost every time..
"If the art of the detective began and ended in reasoning from an arm-chair, my brother would be the greatest criminal agent that ever lived. But he has no ambition and no energy. He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solution, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right." - From 'The Greek Interpreter'.
Martin Freeman kills in every role
I love how at first we all thought, Mycroft was a villain
"It was one Sunday evening early in September of the year 1903 that I received one of Holmes's laconic messages: 'Come at once if convenient - if inconvenient come all the same. S.H.'"
- From "The Creeping Man"
“You aren’t haunted by the war… you miss it.”
I love the character of Mycroft when he acts creepy.
John was so badass in this scene!
I love him so much!!
Spectacularly well-written and well-acted.
Watson: "So when you say you're concerned about him, you're actually are concerned?"
Mycroft: "Yes of course"
And he was.
I love this scene! Martin Freeman is fantastic! I saw all the serie and I'm waiting for the 4th!
John is so badass and brave - I think sometimes people forget that because he's kind, loyal and wears ridiculous jumpers.
Wear ridiculous jumpers LMAO, ngl I love his jumpers 😂
i love the look mycroft gives john at 1:24
Martin Freeman is awesome!
First time I saw this scene I was CONVINCED it was Moriarty. Incredible acting! LOVE this series!! Can't wait for the third season to come out!
Marvellous and of the highest order. Such a good acting.
Mark Gatiss. Not a wasted move or syllable. Impeccably played. Watch what the man acheives with nuance, stance, and frankly a magic umbrella. If John Watson exhibited any possible threat to Mycroft's younger and brasher brother, I sincerly doubt that the man would have left the building alive that night.
I remember thinking like, "oh, it's the criminal mastermind out to kill Sherlock." But now I just watch it thinking, "wow, I love this guy."
Mycroft Holmes: The only man that can bring that much swag to a baggy suit and an umbrella.
I'm not a huge Mycroft fan, but the whole "You're not haunted by the war, Doctor Watson, you miss it. Welcome back." was the line that truly hooked me on this show. I finally realized "DANG. THIS IS INTERESTING."
"I worry about him. Constantly." - "That's nice of you."
John being sassy...
All the time. XD
Mycroft is my favorite character in the series. :) Masterfully played by Mark Gatiss.
The best scene out of the series. I wish the whole scene was here. :(
A perfect summation of Gatiss's acting. One rarely, if ever, sees this in an American actor--at least not today, though I recall similar TV actors in the past such as Robert Stack in "The Untouchables".
I always find my way back to this video
Love you #Mycroft ... Sherlock will be just too dry without you.
God I love this scene. Both actors are great, their acting is just perfect. I first thought that Mycroft was Moriarty too.
And I can't help but think that Martin and Mark are sooo attractive here.
I'm losing myself because of this show x)
(sorry for my poor English)
I'm starting to suspect that this was some sort of test...
Like, if John did take the money Mycroft wouldn't have let him return to 221B in one piece. Or at all, for that matter.
+Ajia Toth that is certainly an intriguing idea.
It was a definite test to make sure his brother surrounds himself with people who care about him. He says he doesn't care but I don't think anyone loves Sherlock more than Mycroft not even John.
Man, if that was the case, I'd failed b/c I would've said yes just to stay alive only to call the cops to report him. XD
We got the confirmation later, that it was in fact, a test.
In A Scandal in Belgravia, when Mycroft asks for their help, he talks about needing someone he can trust to handle it.
John asks him if he doesn't trust his own Secret Service, and Mycroft says: "Naturally not. They all spy on people for money." And John just smirks.
It's a nice little detail.
One of my favorite quotes from the show: "You're not haunted by the war, Dr. Watson, you miss it. Welcome back."
And then when he finds out it's Sherlock's brother he must have been like, 'Oh, sweet Jesus, it's hereditary!'
Martin and Mark, they are just great!
Hmmm...I so love Mycroft. definitely my favorite.
I kind of freaked my wife out when we watched this scene together when Mycroft says, "You're not haunted by the war; you miss it." and I said *"God yes!"*
I did two tours of bomb disposal in Iraq. War is actually a lot of fun when people are trying to kill you unsuccessfully. I remember the first adrenaline rush I got after I got back from Iraq the first time; it was a short public speaking thing I did at church, and I was nervous about it. Then I stepped in front of everyone, the adrenaline hit, and that familiar feeling calmed me down.
Trying to explain this to civilians and even some military folks is hard, but it is so real. I never did stupid stuff for thrills, but damn, I loved the thrill ride of taking down IEDs. I still miss it.
Amazing Mark Gatiss. His interpretation of Mycroft dazzles me; proper, tactful when needed,distant... He achieves to nail the stereotype that people from outside UK have of a British gentleman but adding that sort of dark-powerful edge to it.
I love Mark Gatiss' performance. Mycroft is my favourite character in the series.
He's my favourite character no matter what, which is odd, really. Stephen Fry's portrayal could not be more different from Mark Gatiss.
Dammit, John is so SEXY in this scene...
Oh my god yes!!
I LOVE to see him all badass and unafraid and in Warrior mode.
And I love that others love it too. Sherlock called it "the Only Feature of Interest (in the most perfect and baffling locked-room murder he'd ever seen. The only thing that mattered in the whole thing, like DAMN) And Mary called it "a tiny bit sexy".
...and John said "Yeah I know". XD So he agrees!
Also, knowing he's attracted to danger makes it even better for me!
Same here, it was the exact moment I knew I would love this show.
Mycroft....you and your cake diet....you and your umbrella. I love this guy. I love this show
Mycroft: "It's strange"
Watson: "Maybe, but who am I to judge"
I was in love from John's BAMF face at 0:55. xD
Brilliantly written.
2:47 I love the look on John's face when he looks at his hand: "Yeah, he nailed me there!"
same!! i love at the end when they start talking about 'mummy' and john's just like...whaddafukk
It really was a disappointment that Mark Gatiss did not portray Moriarty in this series. One can fairly see through this scene how powerful and sinister the character would have been , someone who is a cold psychopath and brilliantly cunning at the same time (and having an aura of respect: like a BOSS). Also it would have been more faithful to the original Moriarty as portrayed in the novels.
Electrifying scene. Both actors look particularly handsome here, too.
"We have a...difficult relationship."
Me: "No, REALLY?"
I wonder if that's why Freeman portrayed Biblo Baggins so flawlessly ;-) Wonderful actor!!
There's something about the way Mark Gatiss plays Mycroft. It gives the character more substance than it normally has. I think he is a great Mycroft!
Which is funny because Sherlock already made the same observation. We, the audience, don't know about it until Sherlock realizes it was Watson who shot the cabbie from the window in the second building.
strange.... I thought he was Moriarty xS
I did too at first. I'm glad I thought so too because sibling rivalries like this, especially with Sherlock and Mycroft are usually hilarious.
hehe yep
Well, I think almost everybody did. Phenomenal introduction of Mycroft's character.
+Eliza Liza You and plenty of others. Respect to Andrew Scott and all, but damn Mark Gatiss is just phenomenal!!!
"I worry about him. Constantly."
That never fails to cracks me up. XD The first time I heard him say that I thought, dang, that's one creepy stalker dude.
John refusing to admit he was smitten the moment he meet Sherlock 😂
John Watson. Soldier returning to battle. Amen to that.
I dont like to think about the lengths I would go to for more Sherlock content.
Probably one of my very favorite scenes in the whole show, and that's saying something. This scene alone would have gotten Martin the BAFTA.
Too bad there's never going to be another episode!
Freeman is so good here, it's almost scary.
You can never ever have enough of sherlock holmes. Sir conan doyle hope you are reading this !
side note: Mycroft (in the books, and I'm sure in the show itself, though unmentioned) has deductive reasoning skills that surpass Sherlock's. He may not have needed to look it up.
me too. that's why finally he moved in 221B and chose to stay with Sherlock to face the battlefield in London.
feeling like a genius because you knew his relationship with Sherlock at first glance.
This says plenty about Watson and his need for chaos.
This is Brilliant! I just love Mycroft! I want to smother him in motherly love XP
