My unique strength is academic writing but I am not very good at running experiments. Now I have become a medical writer, and it is fulfilling to being able to work my stronger "PhD muscles", make a living, and be part of something bigger than myself. In my case, I enjoy reading and writing about clinical trials. Knowing my work is a part of a bigger effort is a very important reason behind this choice. I guess I am a "beta" type who likes to serve an assisting role. I would add, talking to more people in another sector and learn if their day-to-day life is something you see yourself doing. Therefore, don't search alone and talk to more people and balance the risks of the decision-making process (we all have blind spots!). Great video as usual, Andy!
Thank you for the addition! Great advice! Your level of self-awareness is important to understanding where your real talent lies and it seems like you have found out what will work for you! Really appreciate you supporting the channel and love seeing yours grow too!
Hey Andy. Hope you are doing well. Once again I really enjoyed your content. I often find myself loving academia+research+rehabilitation. I'm still finding which one really suits my interest. Hope I will find my right career path 🙂🎓
I'm doing great thanks. I'm pleased that you are exploring options - keep going until you find something that you're happy with and works to your strengths!
Omg! Your tips are just on the point! I’ve been struggling with almost all of those problems for the past two years. I’ve moved to Brisbane to do my Master of Philosophy program at QUT. If possible, hope to catch up with you in person someday! Thank you for helpful sharing.
Thank you! It is awesome to hear your life experience till you find what you really love to do ;) Right now I am looking for a job opportunity or a doctorate. I haven't had any real work experience yet and I've been thinking that before I decide to get a PhD, I should try a job.
Have you seen how video clips are used in the online demonstration of VISTA's (Virtual International Science and Technology Academy) Year in Health Sciences or Socratic Arts knowledge management systems? I'm looking for content and licensing agreements like a publisher but although this video is great it's too long. In terms of presenting, I would like to see a shorter version of this video in an ASK hypermedia system with a visual search interface that helps people unfamiliar with subject vocabularie/keywords etc.
Hey Andy!! Thanks for all your advices you gave me and to other people who are following you. However, I don't know actually what to do! I am a physics girl working in an agency as a consultant but it is not what I planned to do. I am actually stuck in this well payed job even though I always wanted to do a PhD in my field, just for curiosity and passion. Now I won a phd application in astrophysics and computational science and I am afraid to do it. I can't catch what I think I want... Could you give me some advices? How can I solve this problem? Should I risk and accept this challenge? How will I discover which activity/career fits to me? Thanks for the help and video you posted. These are very helpful!! 😊
Hi Andy! Thank you so much for this channel. It has helped me look at my Ph.D. objectively. I have tried registering for your newsletter twice but I did not receive the follow-up e-mail :(
Some contradictions. I will paraphrase: "If you can't see yourself doing this for 10 or 12 years, don't do it" contradicts with "Loyalty isn't rewarded and you're just a cog in the machine. Things are moving very fast." "Ask your boss to tailor-make your job" contradicts with "the actual best way to do things is to be self-employed (as evidenced by his career path)." Secondly, who will do all the crappy jobs if everybody is looking for the great jobs? In my opinion, it's better to find the crappy jobs because it will give you job security.
however lame it sounds, going out of your comfort zone should be at the first place of the list because without that, the other points you have mentioned are impossible to do :) anyway, great content as always, keep going! 👍💪

THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO! I'm currently in a dead end job. I'm considering moving, but I'm scared to do the change. Your video is so encouraging!

This was awesome for me!! The fear of starting again from the bottom is what I’m experiencing. Your words were helpful in knowing that it’s okay
One of your best videos. Specially liked the questions and the story about your friend and the sunk costs fallacy.
Glad you enjoyed it! They are real clarifiers for me!
