@donna d Normally, animal diseases don't infect humans, but there are a few, and they are called "zoonotic" diseases for that reason. Trying to think of a few examples...cowpox? Related to variola (smallpox) and carried on the udders of cows. I think some others would be salmonella, Yersinia Pestis (plague), and rabies would be a few. Monkeypox is related to smallpox and chickenpox, but is found in monkeys--and humans that come in contact with infected monkeys. And these wouldn't be diseases that scientists tinkered-with to make them infectious to humans, simply because there's hundreds of years of history showing they pre-date virologists by a long shot. So, generally speaking your uncle is correct, but there are notable exceptions that we have long histories for.
