What I really appreciate about these guys is they hunt like many of us. They put in the time and effort but don't always get the get the deer. I love the camaraderie between one another and the love for the sport. This is why I hunt! Stay strong and true to who you are and safe hunting fellas!
DAD GUMMIT!! Hindsight is certainly 20/20 my friend. There's is so much happening at once that it all becomes a blur. I like these guys, not gonna lie with a shot like that I would not have put that much effort into trying to find a deer. Admirable. Also the editing on these is imo significantly better than a lot of the other recent meateater stuff. Maybe because it's longer.
I hit a 8 point in same spot almost exact angle in 2021. However I shoot Iron Will 125 (cot on contact) with a fairly heavy arrow set up. Iron Will went penetrated shoulder blade & stopped against offside shoulder. As deer ran it cut and cut till the main artery was cut.
If you hit the exact same spot, it would not have hit the shoulder blade. The shoulder blade is significantly higher than that. It would have most likely hit the humorous or the humorous/scapula joint. A good arrow will penetrate that anyway.
@@awwjr29 Right. That is what I figured. The blade sits at an angle, so 'under' it is actually all vitals. Ho a lite bit forward though and you hit the humorous.
Glad they chose to do this episode 45 minutes long. Plenty of interesting content in here and in the 30 minute episodes they always feel like they're rushing through them.
Need heavier arrows. No excuses for lack of penetration. Mechanicals are a huge point of failure too. Cut on contact fixed blades are the way to go. If your arrow doesn’t fly straight with fixed blades, you have a poorly tuned bow/arrow. The Ranch Fairy has some very good stuff on UA-cam.
The Ranch Fairy has good advice for high F.O.C arrow setups. A heavy arrow, for the sake of a heavy arrow, is moronic. RF pushes that point as well. (I.E. the FMJ hate)
I desperately wish it was deer season. I am going all out this year in search of a big buck with a bow. Don’t get me wrong I will happily shoot one with a firearm but something about doing it with a bow is the ultimate experience for me. It is an amazing sport and feeds me at the same time
Absolutely... I've hunted for 40 years but didn't start bow hunting until 15 years ago... I'm hooked for life now... It makes you a better hunter because you have to get closer to the deer.
@@kygreenskeeper8326 exactly! Its a very tough sport but ultimately rewarding if you keep at it. I work for my step dads farming company so I am very fortunate to have access to many farms here. I am in the midwest where we typically have some of the biggest whitetail in the world. In fact a county near me still to this day holds the record for the biggest whitetail ever taken with a bow. Anyway I have been working hard to set up a lot of bow spots and making it a deer haven. That and I spent the past few months looking for sheds. Found some decent ones but then one day I was hiking down through a bottom and found a shed with the most mass I have ever seen. I am praying that I get a chance at him. The antlers themselves are my “trophy” along with the food it provides. This buck is something I would spend the money on for a mount though for sure.
Great video. A lot of learning lessons, such as shot placement and broadhead choice. This most likely would’ve had a better outcome on the deer if a better broadhead was used.
I have thumb issues that cause torque. I shot super sharp two blades and nearly 600 grains. It’s too much imo. Sometimes this kinda stuff happens. I’m never closed off; always thinking about ways to get better. Thanks for the question Paul! What are you shooting?
@@TheElementWild sharp two blades sound like a single or double bevel . What does “they were too much” mean? My experience with expandables have been similar to yours. When everything goes as planned they work. But it’s when things don’t go as expected. The animal jumps. You don’t make a perfect shot , maybe hit forward. My recoveries seem to have gone up when I moved away from expandables. I currently shoot a single bevel cutthroat. Thanks for responding. I really appreciate your open mindedness.
No matter if you’re using a fixed or expandable, there’s always a chance something could go wrong. You’re not invincible because you use a heavy arrow with a fixed head.

lol no, fixed blades don't help make any more of a blood trail. they actually make less as they're less efficient as cutting and don't carry as far thru the animal. won't fix bad shot placement, but undeniably increases how many viable shot options you have.
