On behalf of myself and all the future CDL holders, THANK YOU! You just gave us the BEST tutorial on downshifting I’ve ever saw. I’m currently enrolled in a local trucking school, paying thousands of dollars. No instructor has shown us what you have in this video. Simply the best! 👍🤘🏻
For real. I paid $5200 for CDL school and it's mostly them showing videos from other truck training schools on UA-cam. Lots of illiteracy as well. If I hadn't done my own studying outside of school I wouldn't have passed the written part.
I got my license six years ago and haven’t been on the highway cents today. My new job handed me the keys told me to hop in the truck and take it 70 miles of the state. I experienced a lot of confusion and frustration in missing gears. But the time I took this evening and watching your video helped bring back a lot of my training and give me some comfort and peace to the point that I am looking forward to getting in the truck tomorrow morning and applying what you have helped me remember. Thank you.!
I'm in the same boat. I haven't driven a semi since 2018 and it was an automatic. I've been offered a job recently and the truck is a 9 speed. Not only am I panicking trying to get an idea of it before getting in the truck but I'm worried about laws and things that might of changed and I'm trying to figure out how to catch up lol.
The terms you used “low 8/high 8” etc really helped me to understand that Shifting UP rpm’s can be lower but downshifting they need to be higher! That’s huge. Nobody ever described it like that. I’m going for my CDL soon I drive for UPS and i am thankful for your efforts to help us. 🙏
This guy is great. I was struggling with my down shifting and was concerned for my road test. After watching this video, I aced my downshifting and passed the test. I watched several videos, but this is the best one by far.
@@JimmyR83 that's wassup man hopefully you pass this go around. I passed today after second attempt, had no issues on any part of it except the skills part doing 90 alley dock. His pre-trip video from a few years back helped me greatly, thank you Ace!

Thank you for all of your helpful videos. I am a 59-year old (covid related) displaced aerospace engineer. Needless to say, it is hard to find work in my field at this stage of my career and I'm not quite ready to retire yet. So, with the encouragement of a trucker friend, I decided to get my CDL and become an owner-operator and work with my friend. I signed up with a local school here in So-Cal and my test is on 10-23-2020. I don't really feel like the school is giving me enough training, but I already paid them in full and I am committed to staying with them. It seems like most of the schools in my area are more committed to taking your money, than helping people get their CDL. One of the problems I'm having is occasionally losing my place in downshifting when coming to a stop. I grind, then I panic and brake to a stop in neutral. Anyway, I wanted to say your videos have been a great help. I see you are in Texas. I just wish your school was in the So-Cal area. Thanks for all of your help on youtube.
Hello everyone. First of all let me say thank you for your help and I’m glad to have watch your videos. I pass my test with zero points only because I watched your videos day and night. God bless, and now I need to learn how to float up shift and down shift.
I am currently in school and I completely bombed on my first city drive learning. This video helped me so much I can't thank you enough. It's simple, no need to panic and I was.
I been driving automatically for 10months now, I just remember how to down and find gears watching this guy. First time seeing your video. Asi es como lo haces!!
I done my UHR last December & the instructor was such a tense tosser if I missed a gear he’d freak screaming to rev right up, take the stick off me & keep screaming to rev to the point I was revving up to 17 then he’d slam the gear in then scream how I’m wrecking his truck & no one would ever hire me because I’ll be destroying their vehicle. I was so nervous about getting a job because in my mind I’ve missed gears and never drove perfectly. I had an interview today, I get trial days next week & today I’ve been watching video after video and while each one has helped, yours and another fellas about missing gears has absolutely settled my mind. I now know missing gears occasionally is just part of the drive. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Great video ! I’ve had my cdl for over 4 years, but as a company driver I was always driving automatics the whole time. because that’s all the big companies had. Now that I just bought my first truck and it’s a 10 speed I had to come here and get a refresher. 🤣🤣👏👏👏 You should do a video about downshifting going uphill !!!
This is the BEST and most helpful video on shifting, down shifting, finding “lost” gear, and driving a 10 speed in general. You seem like a great instructor too so thank you for this video!
Hello, I passed my CDL A skills and road test Monday. I paid for classes at a driving school. They never taught gear recovery. I found your video and watched it many times. I am extremely thankful for your video. Muchas gracias!
I only have 3 days of total driving to practice my CDL because I'm a full time truck mechanic and this helps so much more than the overcrowded driving school I'm in. Thank you.
Some of the best explanation I’ve seen. Really helped show me there’s plenty of time to recover. Initially learning it’s easy to panic and try to rush to fix your mistakes

Hey, I've been watching your videos for about a month now. I just went and took my road test to get the manual restrictions lifted off my license and I passed the first time. This video will help anyone with that test. Thanks a lot
@lollis family. Did you have to do the pretrip inspection too or just the driving test? I'm also going to test to get my automatic restriction off next week. Have been watching these videos. He has the best explanation on how to drive manual
@@sweetness2689 I agree he has the best one's I have seen anywhere. No you don't have to do a pretrip just test the air breaks but you are not scored on it they just have to see if they work properly and do the whole road test again, that's it though nothing to it at all. Good luck
@@lollisfamily2170 I appreciate the response. So when making stops, do you have to downshift before stopping or can you stay in gear and just use the brake to stop at a red light?
I’m about to graduate from truck driving school today and I just want to thank you for your videos. You really helped me to learn how to drive a 10 speed manual truck better than any of my instructors could have ever done. I just want to let you know that I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I hope to be as good as you one day when it comes to driving. My cdl class a dmv test is on December 3rd and I’m going to use everything I learned from your videos to try my best to pass my test. Thanks again from Stockton California. 😁🙏🏻
Thank You- that video made sense, if my instructor taught me the way you just did in this video i would have gotten the theory and techniques then, I've bettered myself from watching yours and some other veteran drivers on tips and techniques to shifting so thank you for taking your time making and showing these
Best teaching I've seen on youtube shifting up, down and recovering. All the things I would've wanted to learn in a youtube instructional video when I was first getting my CDL. Easy manner of speaking, great visual aids for the shift pattern over your shifter, the tach and speedo. Great job!
Thanks for the informative videos! Currently, I've got a CDP, working through CDL road-test training sessions, & working towards testing in a month or two. Having not any experience with commercial vehicles, it's been a challenging journey thus far. However, I've embraced each hurdle with a hopefully good attitude. Through it all, I'm happy to say that things are slowly, but surely looking encouragingly towards success. I go into each session with an open mind and hardy work ethic. When I leave, I always look for things to study up on at home to hopefully come back better informed and motivated each week. I refuse to accept failure and am motivated that when I obtain my CDL, it will open so many doors of employment opportunity that I'll theoretically always be able to provide for myself and others in need as God wills. These videos have found their place in my supply of great study material. Thanks for investing your time in sharing!
Passed my CDL skills test yesterday, Sunday, February 21! Thank you so much again for your videos! They have played an important role in my at-home studies, especially with adequately and thoroughly explaining shifting a 10-speed transmission, which I tested with.
Thank you 🙏 Don’t forget to leave your good feedback on my google page. Will greatly appreciate it. Be safe ACE Trucking Academy would love your feedback. Post a review to our profile. g.page/r/CZChj-n-GDAVEAo/review

As a first-time cmv operator, I have missed gears up shifting and down shifting. My instructor has told me this method you have shown in your video. Watching it repeatedly has really helped. Thank you Ace!
No joke!! This UA-cam on shifting. Is the best!!!...watching and reading your instruments is the key.....This video was the reason I just got my CDL. This guy know his stuff. I watched it like 100 times to get the shifting process down. Just wanted to say I passed ....no problem shifting because of your online instruction. Thank you! Keep making your videos as future drivers need them. Regards, BC
Good training. To avoid confusion you just have to know your truck's downshifting speed and rpms combinations and every vehicle may be slightly different. For instance, the truck that I drives downshifting speed in 6th gear seems like is from 20mph down to 15mph which means if I've missed a gear and decide to downshift to 6th gear, I would have to do so BEFORE THE RPM NEEDLE REACHES ANYWHERE BELOW 15MPH ~ SCENARIO ~ So I've missed a gear upshifting from 6th to 7th now I'm coasting in neutral watching the speedometer and it reads around 17 mph so blip the throttle little over 10 rpms ease the shifter in 6th.
I've been driving for ten years and instructed a lot of new people. You make a good teacher, you instill confidence. I watch the learning vids to recommend to new drivers you are one them gracias
This video was very helpful I’m currently in school for CDL and you gave me a better example and a better explanation than what the instructors from school give me and I just wanted to say thank you very much keep up the good work on your videos and God bless you

Thank you!! Gracias por la enseñanza. I will definitely share this with my CDL class mates having trouble with their shifting.
I take my cdl skills and driving test on the 23rd of February! I have amazing teachers that are helping me a lot but man oh man do I wish you were my teacher. You’re patience and ability to teach is just high class. Keep up the content!
Super helpful!! I got my class A permit and been practicing before I enroll to take my driving test. Just wanted to be better prepared first. Now I can show my husband I’ve learned a little extra on my own. Thankful he’s so patient with me while driving.
Hey, I've been watching your videos for about a month now. I just went and took my road test to get the manual restrictions lifted off my license and I passed the first time. This video will help anyone with that test. Thanks a lot
Lollis Family congratulations my friend. Glad to help
@@lollisfamily2170 did you also have to do a skills test backing?
I’m about to graduate from truck driving school today and I just want to thank you for your videos. You really helped me to learn how to drive a 10 speed manual truck better than any of my instructors could have ever done. I just want to let you know that I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I hope to be as good as you one day when it comes to driving. My cdl class a dmv test is on December 3rd and I’m going to use everything I learned from your videos to try my best to pass my test. Thanks again from Stockton California. 😁🙏🏻
I've been trying to find a video like this with the gauges and gear pattern thanks bro
Don Smith hope this helps my friend 👍
Thank You- that video made sense, if my instructor taught me the way you just did in this video i would have gotten the theory and techniques then, I've bettered myself from watching yours and some other veteran drivers on tips and techniques to shifting so thank you for taking your time making and showing these
Best teaching I've seen on youtube shifting up, down and recovering. All the things I would've wanted to learn in a youtube instructional video when I was first getting my CDL. Easy manner of speaking, great visual aids for the shift pattern over your shifter, the tach and speedo. Great job!
Used this video for my retake on my test a year ago and passed with ease thank you
You just fixed my frustration! Gracias
Good luck and thanks for your comment
Passed my CDL skills test yesterday, Sunday, February 21!
Thank you so much again for your videos!
They have played an important role in my at-home studies, especially with adequately and thoroughly explaining shifting a 10-speed transmission, which I tested with.
Such a great video! Thank you for all the pointers that my CDL school does not teach/ share.
Thank you 🙏 Don’t forget to leave your good feedback on my google page. Will greatly appreciate it. Be safe
ACE Trucking Academy would love your feedback. Post a review to our profile.

Best videos I've seen so far, the videos look great and the instructions very easy to follow. Keep up the great work.
Got my CDL 2 years ago haven’t touched a manual since. Got laid off picked up a job driving an 8 speed dump truck with no ac no speedometer.. guy just handed me the truck told me where to go that was about it lol first day was rough but watching your vids gives me confidence for tomorrrow
Helpful! Thanks for the cam on the speedometer and RPM that was a good touch
Keep on rolling on Hansel, eres lo mejor de instructores del CDL. Me encanta sus videos instrucciones. Eres Maestro Señor Hansel. Dale Gas.
The expanded guages you use are great Hansel
I have my class A licence but I learned on a 6th speed . I haven't drive since I got my license and that's about 12 years ago . company wants to hire me but I was not interested . I have to say you're the best instructor I have seen so far . although I have my license I would have problem driving the 10 speed . watching your video I believe I can drive it know
Good luck my friend, it only takes practice
You are the man sir! Phenomenal video. Helped a rookie like me out big time
Glad to hear it!
Thanks a lot for your videos. I got hired on my first company road test. You did this for me I’m truly grateful. Thanks so much.
And I still watch your videos every day. May God bless you.
You are a great instructor. I really enjoy learning from you.
Currently in trucking school and for someone like me that had no experience double clutching nor shifting. You really know how to put it easy and simple. On my 3rd day and shifting got way better and my gear recovery and downshift have improved . Thank you 🙏
I failed my road test 3 times because the school didn’t teach me this. Thank you so much sir
I failed 3 times also because one instructor telling me to shift like a nascar driver another asking me y im shifting like a nascar driver ... hopefully i pass next time
Makes me feel a little better im not the only 1
@@victorcordero1458 yea definitely bro I went in the automatic truck it was much easier because the school sucks at giving us time behind the wheel for practice so I just took the automatic you’ll still make good money and can go back and get the manual
@@kingmaine2159 i want to go automatic but my school told me i would have to start all over again..
@@kingmaine2159 bestof luck bro on your new career be safe out there
Thank you for helping me. I'm in CDL School in Conway, SC. This video helped me with traffic.
Take care, Sir.
Thanks for this and responding fast.
joseph moorer You welcome brother, Thank you for suggesting the video and supporting my channel.
I have a question in Florida do they give the driver test for cdl a in spanish????
Excelent video
I'll subscribe man
If you loose gear and give throttle a blip are you still using clutch to push it in
I have always had a challenge of missing gears and I panic on the road. This is very helpful, you are very good at teaching. Thank you man.
"It's like a dance"
true
That addition trick of numbers to know what gear your should be in is golden 🙏🏼
You do a good job explaining it my dude.. been driving for 10 plus years and the way you explain it is dummy proof
Thanks 💪
I wanna let you know that you helped me more than my teacher at the driving school... After my sessions, i sat in front of my computer and listen to your videos and everything was more understandable ! So, Thanks a lot my friend you are the best !!
I'm a current clp holder right now, and this has been a game changer for me hands down! My road test is in 2 weeks and this has for me has taken a HUGE weight off of my shoulders now that I know how to recover gears properly. Thank you sincerely , thank you
As a first-time cmv operator, I have missed gears up shifting and down shifting.
Regards, BC
You're channel has been so helpful for me. I have 3 days left in CDL school. I'm still learning from your videos.
Thanks
This is the most informative video I've seen on youtube about shifting a truck.
This video was very helpful I’m currently in school for CDL and you gave me a better example and a better explanation than what the instructors from school give me and I just wanted to say thank you very much keep up the good work on your videos and God bless you
Amazing examples I’m currently in school and they haven’t simplified this how you have. I just failed my second my road test and I hate I hadn’t been watching your videos prior to taking my test, this next time is my last chance and I’m looking forward to leaving with my class a partly because of this video . Thank you 🙏🏾.
The simplicity of adding the m.p.h to equal gear(s) is great. I can now focus on what I can do to correct the mistake of downshifting or simply missing the gears I need to be in. Thank you.
currently applying for my CDL Class A, I have 30hrs. under my belt, 20 to go so far. I am getting it down. 90, 45, strait & offset backing no problem, the hardest part so far is catching miss and downshifting gears.. You explain it so well, been searching for an on-line instructor, you are it! Thanks!! ese ~ keep on trucking !
2 year CDL holder, getting ready to go from automatic to 10 speed. I haven’t had to use them since double-clutch school days. You are providing an invaluable service with these lessons! Thank you Sir!!!
Thank you 🙏🏾 you are a great teacher. I obtained my cdl a in December 2023. I haven’t shifted since then. I’ve had two jobs and both were driving automatic trucks. 5/23/24 this past week I’ve had two opportunities one being today. I can shift up but every single time I lose the gear, the grind I guess makes me nervous and I absolutely don’t know how to get in gear except but to stop and start over. This is very discouraging. I will get another chance this Saturday morning. Your videos are great and I will continue to watch this for most of the day and try to put this all together on Saturday.
You explain things we’ll! Very helpful, I wish you the best in your UA-cam ratings! Getting ready to slow down towards retirement and drive truck part time. It’s hard to learn new tricks when you’re older but your videos are making it easier! Thanks
thank you so much for your knowledge about downshifting, uspshifting and finding the gears. I am new to the Trucking workd and I want to be a proffesional Truck Driver and you have saved so me from so much future headaches just by watching this video. May God bless you and your familly and the ACE Truck King. You know how to teach and thank you.
You're by far the greatest teacher on the planet. I love you videos, been watching your videos everyday prepare for my state exam 12/15 from Pennsylvania.
I really love how this guy explains by detail and he’s patience with his students
