I had a 2000 200 ficht on my old ranger. It had around 700 hours when I sold it. Only issue I ever had was a crack in a capacitor that made it hard to start below 20ish degrees. Got that fixed and it was all good after that. I actually liked it, quiet, powerful, and sipped oil and I mean sipped compared to my Optimax. To my knowledge it's still going!

DO the lower HP (90 HP) have the same problems and are they just as shitty? Im asking because im considering purchasing a boat with a 2000 90HP,. Everywhere online says the FICHT are trash but the problems were mostly with the larger HP 6 cylinders and the lower HP 4 cylinders should be fine. Would you agree with that statement?

  • @andrewmaris3938

I've commented before about mine. 99 200 ficht pushing 1200 hours. New power head at 700 hours and new lower unit at 950 hours. Aside from those 2, all else has been regular maintenance.
One good thing to add is, any boat powered with an evinrude most of the time is significantly cheaper than other boats powered with mercury or yamaha. Run it hard and if it ever goes, then repower with something different of your preference. If it doesn't then you got a boat at a decent price. I've also always been a fan of how quiet and powerful the etecs were too.

Appreciate this video very much. Thanks. As of this month I have been a marine mechanic for a half a century... OMG time flies lol... anyway,.....
Was a mechanic and service manager in central florida for stratos , bayliner and a few other brand names. First year ficht we sold some 300 of them. 9 out of every ten died within hour 1. No shit. OMC ended up delivering semi truck loads of replacement powerheads and lowers. Those as well jsut ran for a short time and boom.. gone. I was ashamed of my beloved OMC. I have zero doubt that ficht was the final nail in the casket for OMC. VRO was bad enough, ficht cost them tens of millions of dollars that first summer and they never recovered. Recall after recall after recall and never did they figure it all out. What a shame. The idea was fantastic to a point. Just had a reality issue that blew everything into oblivion.

I had a 1998 Johnson 150 Ficht. It was upgraded for free in 2000 to the new Ram Ficht which changed the amount of oil injected. I ran it on a 18’6 Hydra Sports until 2014 when I traded for a Ranger with Mercury 225 Pro XS. I must have got lucky but engine was never in the shop the 16 years I owned it except for the Ram upgrade. I had many more issues out of the Mercury. Went with my Dad to buy a new 1999 sprint the dealer told him if your going to go with OMC buy the carb Johnson 150 , by the way it’s still running one power pak replacement in all the time. The dealers knew in 99 that the tech was junk. I may be very wrong an I usually am but I’ve had a g2 150 for 3 years now an have been very happy with only time will tell if this engine was solid engine or not? But I do know one thing the big price increases for the boat an motors plus interest rates will hurt the new boat sales in the future! Which means people will be coming to you to keep there used stuff running! An again always love your channel!

All engines of different years. Maybe he got lucky and somehow got 10 amazing etecs ? Same as all the etecs running tournament circuits here ? They must have all been extremely lucky and the optimax guys here must be super unlucky since most are on their second or third powerhead. The only reason I bought my etec was from multiple mechanic opinions and guys who actually run them. Every single guy who hates evinrude and shits on them are guys who have never owned one. I'm not brand loyal and think they all make good outboards. They all have issues especially when not maintained right. I can say that based on local all the info from owners and mechanics here the last engine I'd buy is an optimax and even they aren't that bad. Now....Fitch engines ya they were scary bad but that was OMC being cheap. They had amazing technology but tried to use the cheapest parts possible. Hi, thanks for your video. I guess I'm lucky I've had the boat new since 2000 we've used it for years. No real problems at all until now. 2023 is when it started cutting out. When you take off wanting to die when you you put it in gear we've spent couple thousand dollars trying to get it fixed. Once you get it going it goes okay. It's just taking off. We do ski with it too so that's screwed that up. They've changed the spark plugs 've always garaged it. It's always been inside. Taking good care of now. We just can't get it fixed so wanting to sell it. Pat, after watching your video, I'm not too excited about selling it to somebody. Is there anything you can tell me about why this issue is happening? Or maybe a quick fix that Mike? Let us sell it. It's really weird. If you hook it up to water in the shop it runs fine but you put it in the lake. It's never been in the ocean only lakes. You get the issue of it dying when you put it in gear and cutting out as you take off. Any help with a fix issue on this would be great

You should do a video on Verados. And another video on repowering. More than half the used freshwater boat market is flooded with overpriced boats with two strokes. I need to know how much it'd cost to repower, after trading in an Etec/ProXS and then labor for the repower.

I had a 1998 Johnson carb'd 150, how many years did OMC co-manufacture and sell the carb'd motors as well as the Ficht's?

Best thing is to ask a great mechanic about stuff before you make a Boat purchase. Perfect example. Thanks for the info.!!! But who does not like dual exhaust sound!!

Question concerning emf overheating on the water cooled version:Wasn't there a Re-Route of the Cooling Lines to Help or Eliminate that particular issue?I vaugly remember a Friend telling me that his 175 Had that problem and the fix was a change to the way the water was sent to cool them down better???

  • @checkity1

Like others have commented, its a crap shoot with the Ficht. Some grenaded immediately while others are running today with 1000+ hours on them. I have a 2000 225 with 500+ hrs. It had the injector bolt recall completed by the dealer in 2004, and one EMM rebuild in 2014. Other than that, only routine maintenance. If you regularly check the the water lines to the EMM for blockages, you will never have an emm issue. The FICHT is all about preventative maintenance. And if you get good enough at outboard repair to keep a Ficht running well....other motors are absolute cake to work on. OMC put out two lowers for the ficht..the Lightening and the Magnum. The lightening was the one that failed most often, while the magnum was built heavier and much more reliable. The issues you mentioned affected different year models, not all fichts. My 2000 isn't known to have the reed box issue, exhaust blowout, or the head bolt issue. Many FICHTs are junk. But if you did get one of the good ones, you have one hell of a motor. The thing hauls ass and the hole shot is unmatched. It's never left me stranded, and I regularly go offshore from the Texas coast....I do keep my SeaTow membership up to date though...🤣

So I have to ask you at this point. What motor do you actually like? A really good power to weight ratio in something between 101 and 150 hp. I have an old StarCraft Chiefton.

Sooooo the old normal 2 stroke non electronic evinrude motors had a awsome reputation . I had two. 135hp long shaft 4 cylinder v motors. Great power to weight ratios. I thought I wanted a E-tech but heard nothing good about them from anyone that had one for more than a year

I have had 2 fichts a 98 175 ficht and a 2004 150 with a jet foot. The 98 got the repinned heads from factory and has almost 600 hrs on it. they both suck fuel and eat oil like its candy but both fire up first turn and runs every time. The worst part of both is the mid range fuel map issue if its not idle or wide open it sounds like a popcorn maker spittin and sputtering. Not a good motor at all but cant be mad at the years ive got out of them.

A little late on the video, but just wanted to add in. I recently purchased a 97 ranger comanche 482vs with a 98 150hp FICHT motor on it with about 800 hours. Very clean and well maintained, but now I'm a little concerned. Did I get lucky with a good one or do I need to rip this thing off and buy a new motor?

Andy, in Maryland many Johnson's and Evinrude's. Had a 200 Ficht 1998, only problem 700 to 1500 rpm run ruff. Dealer updated cpu, ran great for 450hours, sold it and new the new owner put another 450 hours. Purchased a 2008 200 G1 no problem, another 450 hours, best feature self-winterization. 2017 purchased a 225HO G2, another no problem motor, great hole shot, speed, light weight with lithium batteries, kept up with any 20 foot 250. Don't understand, why 4 strokes are popular slow hole shot, heavier, changing oil every 100 hours, costly and 3 days in the shop.

I didn't know about powerhead bolts being shot out, I'll try to stay away from anyone w/ a fitch don't wanta get exploded.

The V4 OMC motor was probably the last great motor that came for the Johnson / Rude camp.
Yamaha copied the OMC V4 design and most everyone I know that has them will never get rid of them.
As far as I’m concerned Yamaha picked up the torch that OMC / BRC dropped and did something amazing for outboards.
The G2 was ahead of it’s time (in my opinion) and concept just never reached full potential. Quality control was sacrificed in life of greed and profit. Evinrude took the gamble and lost.
Perhaps one day someone will acquire the Evinrude name and make it great again.

We had 2 in our local club back when there were local clubs (whole different rant). I have always thought....they can't be THAT bad...I worked at a local boat dealer and one of the girls at the front office got one in the lot....the owner came out and lost his mind!!! He just kept yelling "who let that POS show up here"!!! Hahaha
