Speediance currently comes with a lifetime free membership. There's no $29.99 a month. That may be coming in the future, but current owners and buyers will be grandfathered in and remain at $0 a month. That's a huge savings. I own the Speediance, it's great, I absolutely love it. I worked out on the Tonal a few times, I prefer the Speediance. And to counter Travis's point about disconnecting the cables on Speediance vs. Tonal's Arm System, I respectfully disagree. I found manipulating the arms on the Tonal to be complex and cumbersome. The Speediance cables clip in and out so fast and easily. I'd wager you can change exercise set ups faster on Speediance than on Tonal. There's also a lot less plastic on the Speediance, it feels more solid to me. Tonal is a great machine, but when you factor in price, ease of use, portability, membership dues and overall quality of materials, I feel Speediance takes the win.
Great feedback and hopefully this helps others. I wanted to provide the monthly price because I believe that is the long term plan but you are spot on about this being a great deal if you lock in the free membership now. As far as switching, I love the alternative view and hopefully this helps others. I still prefer Tonal but it is very close and I don’t mind d Speediance at all.
Great comparison. I almost bought a Tonal last year, but since I don't own my own house I was reluctant to buy something that had to be professionally mounted to the wall. The portability of the Speediance is just what I'm looking for, and that it's considerably less expensive is also a plus.
Thank you! I would not want to mount the Tonal to location I was not dedicated to long-term either. The Speediance could be a great option and if you decide to get it, I hope you love it!
I wanted the tonal but I didnt love that you couldnt move it and how expensive it was. I bought the Speediance a couple months ago when they were offering free lifetime membership and I love it! For the price savings I surely dont mind the slight differences! Your reviews I think are spot on!
Awesome! Thank you so much for that. Always good to hear what I put out there is accurate as I never want to unintentionally mislead people. So glad to hear it is working out well for you!
I’m really interested to get Speediance but I’m very curious about how squats work for speediance since there is no place to rest the barbell. Doing squats is my main workout routine and I want to make sure I can comfortably doing squats 😊
I have owned a tonal for about 4 years now and there are several features not covered here . Tonal includes weight assessment at the beginning which will set your recommended weight for all exercises no guess work and a lot safer for beginners They also have a feature to connect to your watch/phone to tonal and see calories heart rate etc to help you with your workouts Tonal has a camera that can be connected to your phone and using the camera they can give you live feedback on your posture like a live trainer would I love the programs and work out videos because they are not just motivational the give you pointers on how to safely do the workout as well as where you should be dealing the burn and how to correctly do these exercises. I wouldn't trade my tonal for any of these new machines.❤
100% would get speediance. The whole point of home gym is to avoid “membership” fees and I think speediance offers lifetime membership so you don’t pay monthly
As I already have a Tonal I’m definitely biased , but seeing all the new connected fitness items coming out it’s definitely a tough choice given the price differences. Keep in mind Tonal was also a lower price point a few years ago too!
Those tonal fees would be the biggest drawback for me. I love the convenience of a home gym but adding that on top of our Peloton subscription seems like too much. These videos are super helpful and saving us all some money when making buying new equipment.
They are rough and stacking them with the Peloton subscription is hard to stomach. Fun setup, but expensive. So glad to hear the video was helpful! Thank you so much for the kind words!
@@Learnwithtravis For sure, I live not far from a Planet fitness (eh) but a monthly fee there plus access to so much more, these things are not even worth it at all. In no way what so ever tbh.
It is all situational. If you have a local option that could very well be the much better option for you. But what if you don't? Live out of town? Have little kids where you can't hop out whenever you want? Demanding job? I am not saying the Tonal or Speediance is 100 percent the right decision. I am saying either could be depending on your life situation.
Hello! I liked your review it was really helpful! So im thinking on buying a Tonal because i like how clean it looks, however im not new to gym so i dont even want the subscription and dont want to pay for that, it would be great a review with no monthly sub to see if its only usefull with a paywall, ty!
Thank you so much! Tonal No Subscription - ua-cam.com/video/OQdavZ5C5BA/v-deo.html Speediance (No Monthly Fee) - ua-cam.com/video/0tAdvxc07Qw/v-deo.html
As far as I can tell, there is no ability to cancel. Everyone just has everything turned on right now. However, the product page has a checklist of what it says will and won't be included with a canceled subscription. Included is the movement library, free lift mode, strength assessment, special weight modes, and Spotter mode. Access to the various pre programmed workouts is limited (My guess would be all the workouts labeled as Beginner would be accessible, and the Intermediate and Advanced ones turned off). "Program", smart recommendations, and live workouts (if they start those) will be inaccessible. I'm not quite sure what they mean by program. It could be the multi-week programs you can select, or the ability to create a custom workout by selecting a series of workouts to do in a row. From what I can tell, both will let you set a weight and use it. But Speediance let's you keep access to special weight modes (like chains vs regular), it has the spotter safety feature that I believe Tonal doesn't have, and let's you see the full library of movements to reference and, if my assumption is right, access to the beginner level workouts. The biggest surprise to me is still allowing access to the special weight modes. But that's all theoretical since we can't test it out, and if they're going to grandfather everyone into the subscription, they may very well change that checklist one subscriptions go live.
Ohhh tonal has some serious competition! I tried one out in a Nordstrom and loved it but the price was holding me back. Definitely would like to hear more about this option!
Check out the full review here! Tonal is awesome, but Speediance is holding its own and constantly getting better (Frequent software updates). ua-cam.com/video/0tAdvxc07Qw/v-deo.html
Great review. I have had the Tonal since 2020 and really like it. That said, it’s always good to hear about new things. I would still choose Tonal over Speediance and Oxefit.
Thank you! It is a great machine and if I forgot the price difference I would pick it too. Knowing how much you can save as a new purchase with Speediance makes it a hard decision!
I am glad I got my Tonal earlier and got a discount too ha ha. Mine was a lot cheaper than they are now. Love the machine though and think it is a superior device to the Speediance just based on the pully configuration. However, like you said the Speediance seems to be a lot better value overall. Tonal should consider lowering their subscription price and adding more default not-subscription based features.
Yeah, I think my Tonal was almost half what they are today. Just crazy. Your comment is spot on. You will not be disappointed with the Tonal product but you will probably consider Speediance the better value when you factor in cost.
What about the unitop u-trainer? Looks awesome. Personally I went with the HandyGym because I travel a lot. Plus there's no subscription and it doesn't rely on faulty software.
I don't remember what I said, but I think I may have mentioned that a subscription may be coming. To this point, they have done this and anyone that purchases before one is put in place is said to get a free life-time membership. As of right now, the AEKE K1 is doing something similar. I don't know what the long-term plan is, but grabbing either of these machines and not having to pay a membership is wonderful (compared to Tonal).
Thanks for doing the video. Looking at the Speediance on video it looks like it’s not built with sturdy components. I also see that you are a tall guy like myself and that’s an issue for doing lat pulldowns. I have seen other videos were I see the Speediance shaking while it was being used. I use it was built more sturdy and I wish it higher. Im 6’3” and doing any lat pulldown movements would be challenging. The screen software seems ok. Your a big guy and I see in the video that you had to bend over while using the uprights for tricep work.
My pleasure. Honestly, I feel it is pretty sturdy. The screens hands and moves a little when you use it, but that is by design. I have never felt it was poor build quality or lesser components. As far as the tricep pulldowns, that is just how I do them. I tend to learn over a little, engage my core, and try to pull back into me. Or at least when in a position like that. With the Tonal I pull more down instead of in, but I still lean over and engage my core.
Good over view. If you have already done a vid with a canceled membership for the speediance, could you tell me the name please? If you haven't, it would be GREAT to know how it does without the membership. Thank you. Joshua.
I reached out to them and right now, everyone has the full me membership for free. They don't have immediate plans to start charging subscriptions and with that, have no ability to turn mine off. If you are interested, I would consider getting one while they are offering a lifetime membership. But when things change, I will get a video out there showing what it is like without a membership.
Nice Review Travis, thank you. I am looking at both and notice that Tonal has a "Burn-out" mode. I like the concept but it all comes down to implementation. What I'd like is essentially a "Pyramid" mode, easier and progressively more weight until failure and then back down with lighter weight, until failure - essentially allowing a one set to failure allowing me to be super efficient and on to the next exercise. Do you know if either allow this either as a standard or custom mode? Thanks in advance - and I will use your code when I pull the trigger!
Thank you! You know, I honestly don't think either has this mode, but it would be really neat. My best advise would be send both a message via support and ask if that is a feature they may implement in the future. It is all software so they could easily do it.
Tonal has always had a burnout mode. If you change the rep goal for your sets it’s a pyramid or reverse pyramid. Reps go up, weight goes down or vice versa. Burnout mode is the ultimate drop set
Great review, as usual. One feature on Tonal I don’t like is the way it increases your weight without giving you a very visible warning. Does Speediance do this?
Starting to see a trend, lol. More and more videos showing Tonal is a company that just doesn’t care or listen to the consumer. As a tonal owner, the monthly fee is becoming unjustified, at 59$. And with no lower tier I have thought about selling it. Tonal wouldn’t be the first company to go down over not listening to the people who use there product, and they won’t be the last.
Yeah, it feels like they have decided to stay in the higher income customer space and not make it more viable for other customers. That is their choice but disappointing for me as I do like the product and wish they would make it available to more people. If they don't change, I do think Speediance has a chance to take over the market. It is a great product as well but so much more affordable. Will be interesting to see how things play out!
Hi Travis, I have a very unique situation I’m looking at both of these machines, but I am in a wheelchair. I have no doubt that I could use the. Tonal I do have the ability to transfer for benching, but I cannot get gym Monster to answer any of my questions I would like to know one do you think that I could get a wheelchair over the platform on the gym monster and do you think there’s any workouts that I could do from a chair on the tonal that I could not do on the gym Monster would you think about my situation and give me your opinion I’ve been going back-and-forth for days and they are both on sale right now. Thanks.
Hello! With the Speediance, you have a few obstacles that I think may be a bit challenging. First, is the matt itself. It is thick and you need to be in different positions depending on what you are doing. I have a feeling a wheelchair would be difficult. Second, when the resistance is below you it only has one position and that is right on the sides of the mat. I don't think you would be able to get the cables to move freely. With Tonal's ability to move the resistance points all around, I that that would be a huge help to make lots of exercises work. My gut says the Gym Monster would be challenging. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for responding to my questions. I sincerely appreciate it. I’ve been asking the same questions of gym monsters, customer service for days now none of their attempted answers even came close to my question and it took them days to respond. I really wish I could use their machine, but I was very worried about the platform and having to ship the machine back at my cost according to their customer service if it didn’t work, I ended up going with a tonal even though I wish I could’ve went with the cheaper option and the lifetime membership currently offered by gym Monster I think I will be very happy with my decision. I just wish I didn’t have to pay the expensive membership as I am sure I will be able to use the classes very little. however, I did watch your other video on the ridiculous amount of functionality you lose canceling the membership, so I feel like that isn’t an option thank you for giving me your opinion and helping me make a clear decision you have definitely earned a subscriber.
I am also going to try and make a video review on the tonal from a wheelchair users perspective as I think that would be helpful for people in my situation
@@aland678 I wish you could use the Speediance too. I think they are a smaller upstart and still figuring some things out (customer service), but unfortunately that design is unlikely to work well from a wheelchair. So very glad to help out and hope the Tonal works out great for you. It is really expensive but it is a great machine and should last you a long time. Great idea on the video! I am sure that would help a lot of people!
Speediance seem like the better deal honestly, but I am interested in the rumored Echelon Strength Machine, which is basically a Tonal, but freestanding. Also, Tonal is so dumb.. they've been around for so long now, but still not selling in EU, so.. Speediance is in this market and they are only in the US and Canada, but.. well, if they don't want to earn money, it's up to them. I do definitely prefer free-standing, rather than wall-mounted.
Yeah I showed it to a buddy of mine today. He has been looking at a Tonal for a year. He said.. that’s what he was going to get, the 59$ for life was just not acceptable. His income is above 300k a year, that’s a lot where we live. I think tonal will loose this war or change.
I really wish Tonal would sell the unit only and include eccentric without the subscription... I would pay the extra $2000 over the Speediance if they offered that, but now that Speediance gives you lifetime subscription with the $2500 purchase, (not sure if this deal will last forever) I am all about it. I don't care about the personal trainer or specialty features, I just want to select the weight and workout.
Tonal - ua-cam.com/video/OQdavZ5C5BA/v-deo.html Speediance - I think it is free for all right now, but if they have have a free vs paid, i will look into that!
Some of that depends on what they do. Ideally, they do the right thing and unlock it while making existing content available. But worse case is likely you get the current non-subscriber functionality which allows you to use the machine but with very limited features.
I wish I could! Honestly, emailing them and saying you are waiting for a review from Learn With Travis could really go a long way. I would love to review and compare Oxefit against Tonal and Speediance.
In few decades, we will have to subscribe for for the fresh air we breathe.. every thing comes with a subscription.. companies are just experimenting, how far are costumers willing to pay subscription fees.. and each time they raise the fees even further
That is one way to look at it. While I don't agree with the price, a lot of functionality subscription-based devices provide, and on-going improvements comes at a cost. If you don't want a "smart" gym option, get a rack system that is what it is. Nothing wrong with that at all and they are great options. But "Smart" does have a cost to maintain.
Maybe. I need to play with it a bit more. Everything disconnected and I thought it was bluetooth but the batteries all died. I was surprised at how quickly they died but as soon as I put new batteries in me handles started working (not bluetooth). I have not worked on the barbell adapter since and I need to play with that to see if it was battery or bluetooth but hoping it was battery like the others.
Bluetooth issues has been resolved. It now comes with a ring that both activates and changes the weight right at your fingertips (literally). The connection has proven stable for me and countless other users I interact with online. The older "Smart Accessories" have had some issues for sure, but they aren't even available anymore, they pulled them and instituted the ring for all new Speediance packages.
You really should do an update because the speedience blows away the tonal I've had the tonal I've had the vitruvian and the speedience gym monster is so much better The amount of different angles you can hit with the adjustable bench blows away anything you can do on tonal with its flat bench. It has a lifetime membership 2700 out the door its not even close .
Neither of these make any sense at all unless you are tight on space. For the price of the Tonal you can get a decent Functional Trainer, which will let you do all these exercises, and a power rack, bench, barbell, and a pile of plates. No subscription fees no worries about stuff wearing out or the electronics going kaput, last virtually forever (I have some plates and db handles from the early 70s that I am still using).
Can’t completely agree with that. I get where you are coming from and there are plenty of reasons a functional trainer would be more than enough for people. There are other reasons to still consider these options. Compact, personal trainer, great at teaching you new lifts (no to lifting), ease of use, smart resistance modes, and spotter mode.
@@Learnwithtravis Fair enough. I can't (or, at least, shouldn't) pretend my preferences should be universal. Still, the "personal trainer" and spotter mode and all that just seem like gimmicks to me. And how long will these things last?
@@richardmather1906The so-called eccentric mode of these devices is not a gimmick, but a complete game-changer. Not possible with free weights or traditional machines. The amount of extra pump you get is incredible, and you will get faster and better results.

If they don't change, I do think Speediance has a chance to take over the market. It is a great product as well but so much more affordable. Will be interesting to see how things play out!
700 a year for subscription only that's nuts... is it possible to use without subscription?
All good points!
Echelon is $5k though
Yeah I showed it to a buddy of mine today. He has been looking at a Tonal for a year. He said.. that’s what he was going to get, the 59$ for life was just not acceptable. His income is above 300k a year, that’s a lot where we live. I think tonal will loose this war or change.
Agree! Hopefully it pushes to a more affordable pricing model.
Got my Tonal used from somebody local for $1800 + $200 install haven't had any issues in 2 years.
It does seem to be very long-lasting high-quality machine.
Did you get someone from Tonal to install?
I really wish Tonal would sell the unit only and include eccentric without the subscription... I would pay the extra $2000 over the Speediance if they offered that, but now that Speediance gives you lifetime subscription with the $2500 purchase, (not sure if this deal will last forever) I am all about it. I don't care about the personal trainer or specialty features, I just want to select the weight and workout.
I agree! Speediance has a chance to really take over this market because of their pricing model compared to Tonal.
you should do a video on cancel machine....
Tonal - ua-cam.com/video/OQdavZ5C5BA/v-deo.html
Speediance - I think it is free for all right now, but if they have have a free vs paid, i will look into that!
If the company that makes this ceases to exist, can one use this device, and to what extent?
Some of that depends on what they do. Ideally, they do the right thing and unlock it while making existing content available. But worse case is likely you get the current non-subscriber functionality which allows you to use the machine but with very limited features.
can u buy the oxefit pleaseee
But "Smart" does have a cost to maintain.
out of curiosity, have you had any bluetooth issues with your speediance? That's one thing I'm hearing murmurs of...
Great to know! I will have to look into that!
Yeah, that price difference is huge. I will try to revisit this a little down the road.
What happened? I remember this thing was like 1500-2000 now it’s 4000 geez
Yeah, the price increases really caught me off-guard as well. I bought it at the original price and could not believe how much in climbed.
The monthly fee of tonal is 3x what it should be.
Definitely high.
I love my tonal
It is a great machine
The amount of extra pump you get is incredible, and you will get faster and better results.
total gym wouldnt reccomand anything else
People are selling their tonals like hot cakes on fb marketplace dont buy one.
The biggest problem with Tonal is the price. If you could find one at a steal, I would argue the opposite.
