WLS Channel 7 - AM Chicago - "Anthony Geary at Northbrook Court" (Complete Edition, 2/23/1981) 🧼

- Here's raw footage of a complete edition (albeit not the broadcast version) of AM Chicago which originated from the Northbrook Court Mall. Host is Robb Weller, and the guest was Anthony (Tony) Geary (a.k.a. Luke Spencer) of General Hospital fame.
NOTE: There are no commercial breaks or promos, nor opening music or titles (or ending credits or lower-third supers), but this is shown as went out from the mall, and shows what usually goes down "in the studio" between segments (which the home audience usually never sees).

Includes:
Behind-the-scenes countdown directing audience to applaud, followed by Robb coming out, explaining they will originate from the mall for the week to come, and doing a "spell-out" in introducing Tony by citing his character's name, before taking a break
Audience fires up again on cue after first break, Robb explains how most seats were sold out but welcomes passersby to come look, after which the man of the hour arrives to screaming fans; upon entering the stage he makes like a rock star and explains how he "always wanted to do that," before settling down for business; Robb goes on about all the preparations they made for his appearance, and asks other probing questions to the star including whether he thinks it's frightening, his plans after returning later that night to L.A., and how he sees himself in later years, before the host signals for the next break
After the usual off time, the audience comes alive again and the action resumes, with Robb asking who of the women at the mall would Tony pick, whether he always had "this effect" on women, when "this effect" clicked for him (and him speaking of his co-star Genie Francis a.k.a. Laura), after which Robb fields questions from members of the audience including Debbie from Elmhurst (about how much of Tony is in Luke), before going to the next break
After this down time, where Tony gestures to one Kathy Cardinello (sp?), we pick up again with Robb fielding questions from Linda Levy from Glenview (about where he was the previous night), Jack Chenowicz (sp?) from Skokie (about being adored by millions of women), then Robb asks him about things he cannot do now because of his fame and standing, and what his life's about at the (then-)present time; next Renee Schneiderman from Des Plaines asks a question relating to Genie, before the host asks what it's like to do a love scene; then Leslie Krachowski (sp?) from Highland Park asks if Tony has a girlfriend (he says the time he works on GH cost him at least one relationship), after which Robb signals for another break
After the "Applause" command, Robb previews next day's edition with real-life Chicago playboys, before asking Tony about how he sees himself five years from now, and how long he would continue on GH, after which Robb signals the end of this edition (which would have had a copyright notice superimposed on the screen on the broadcast edition).
After the host and guest and audience leaves, a lady comes out to apologize it couldn't have been longer or that anyone else couldn't talk to Tony, but the mall was lucky to have gotten him at all, and she invites the attendees to stay around to watch if they wish, and she has assistants out to get audience members out in a quiet, orderly manner; she continues her instructions as the recording ends.
With the usual trappings, this aired on local Chicago TV on Monday, February 23rd 1981.

If you weren't around when the Luke and Laura phenom was out you missed something that we will probably never see again, they were every where, TV, mags, newsoapers, imagine if social media was around back then, a blessed witness, Tony Geary and Genie Francis, we will never see the likes again sadly..
I remember GH,L&L,glued to the tube. We couldn't wait! Still in our minds and hearts.
Could not believe how big GH got in that 1980-1982 era. Lots of folks who never watched until then, and never watched a soap after, got hooked.

My favorite always
I cannot overstate how big Luke and Laura (Tony Geary and Genie Francis) on General Hospital were in the early 1980's. Guys from the all-male dorm next door would come over at 3pm ET every day to sit in our all-female dorm and watch GH because of Luke and Laura.
It was also a set where illegal drugs were being consumed by many, including the very young GF.
Tony you are still so missed on GH and you you're still a sexy charismatic man today.
It is his charming personality.
This is such a snapshot of an Era & had to have been at the height of "Luke and Laura" Mania. I remember my mom & I talking about going to this that day but we didn't make it for whatever reason. I haven't thought about that in 40 (?!?) years.
I love Tony Geary. Big LnL fan! Tony G said he's kinda shy. So every time he had a speaking engagement he would just go on as Luke.
I think being in the closet made it very scary. He wanted to build his career up.
It is hard to remember that we all were not as accepting then. He probably felt that he had to be very careful. But I can imagine Luke Spencer as "shy!!!"

@@debrahubbard763I think he’s still very careful. He allows himself to be on his husband’s Instagram but he’s not out there saying he’s gay. Being in Amsterdam allowed him to live his lifestyle quietly with the man he loves.

I was 1 year old when this was filmed so I honestly have no clue who this guy was LOL. But it is soo cool seeing Northbrook Court back in its former glory days! I grew up in Glencoe so NBC was a huge part of my childhood. I would go there all the time in the late 80’s and through the 90’s when I was a kid and then a teenager. The massive decline of this mall over the recent years is really so sad.
He is something so charismatic love his Luke
After the show was over the amount of work the janitors in that mall put in with their mops and cleaning supplies was incredible.
I liked the A.M. Chicago Talk Show format better.Robb seemed real & genuine in his interactions with people.
A FUN FACT! Between 1977 and 1993, Anthony Geary and Quiet Riot lead vocalist Kevin DuBrow shared joint custody of the same head of hair! It's true!
His hair changed when he left. Had to get extensions to come back as Luke.
LOL 2yrs....Oh Tony if you could have only seen the future LOL. Not matter how hard he and Genie tried, they could not shake L&L. Nobody could except them even today as anything but L&L. It kind of sucks because they are both such great actors.

He's once again wearing a jacket the color he painted his apartment during the sticky door era. He wore one then, too. I always felt that was a personal favorite color of his. It was too random for a character to just pick "purple" for his walls without his input. It made for some great comedy, though.

I believe it's TG & LS choice. TG wears alot of purple off screen and wardrobe took the cast shopping for their own choice of clothes for their character. You can google it

Part of my attraction and respect toward TG was his need for total privacy around his personal life. That's why I felt the whole Elizabeth Taylor period seemed too fake and public, as most publicity stunts are. I think it hurt his career more than it helped him....in my opinion 😊

Luke is seen thru gorgeous Genie's eyes! There is scene where he is scoping the hotel where he is suppose to kill Mitch Williams, he's wearing leather coat and sunglasses. It is 100% hilarious. Genie Francis is so beautiful, gorgeous eyes & when she makes eye contact that is when he becomes attractive. I know she quit because of rampant cocaine on the ABC set. He and Tracy are together in real life, she said life imitates art.
Tony guards is privacy for a reason. I'm grateful that L&L came at a time when "Reporters" still understood there are some things you keep your mouth shut about! For a short time he dated the lady killer cop (The African American Guy) on "Barney Miller". But even in todays world of the internet it's VERY hard to find anything about his personal life. I really had to dig, and that was a few years ago. Also Genie has repeatedly said the reason she walked out was because one morning someone (She won't say who) stopped at her dressing room and said Tony is the "Real" star, if you left today the rating would not suffer at all!! So Genie grabbed her shit and walked the f**k out, right then. Turned out the person was WRONG!! When she left, the ratings dumped and GH went back to having the same number of viewers as the other soaps. Me and all my friends pretty much walked away, until she returned 83, and THEN we came back. But eveytime Genie left so did a lot of fans.
If I didn't think he was gay before, I sure do now...his answer for does he have a girlfriend was classic closeted gay male. I love Luke. He's incredibly attractive and always was, but Tony is a whole other entity. Remarkable actor. Truly deserved all his Emmys.
