Just got a new exhaust on the 96 Suburban. It has the 454 engine in it. I got the flowmaster 40 series single in, dual out. Also put a new rear bumper on it.

i have a 93 k1500 burb with 270k on him.. maintenance is easy. you can walk into almost any parts place and get almost anything you need, the gas mileage on mine is around 15 when it runs right.. a 454 suburban may get alittle less. but they are fun to own. and easy to maintain
Thanks bud! Actually, about 9 years ago I did the whole system from manifolds back, true duals with two flowtech mufflers. This year when I re-did it, my exhaust guy said I was actually losing power due to back-pressure. So i had him put the stock pipes back on the front, then run a single pipe into a single flowmaster 40 with dual outlets. Dual pipes all the way back after the muffler. Seems to run better now. I also have a high flow aftermarket cat. Hope that helps! Thanks again.
It is a Manik brush guard. It had the headlight guards, but I ran over a steel telephone pole in down town Pittsburgh, and that crushed the one side. So, I cut both sides off and used balljoint boots to cover the tubes. Worked out nicely.
Yes, I put magnaflow high performance cats on it. It had a lot of different exhaust systems on it over the years so mine could have definitely been different. I loved the way it sounded also. Not to loud inside though.
Sounds wicked! I've always wanted a big block Suburban but I'm already hurting putting gas in the Suburban I have now that has a 350! But after hearing that, I'm definitely going to go with Flowmasters when I get around to replacing the exhaust.
I paid between 400 and 500 and that covered the price of the muffler. I had true duals on it before this and my exhaust guy said I was losing power due to the engine requiring more back pressure. I went with single exhaust back into the muffler, and dual out of the muffler and it runs better! Sometimes more flow isn't always better.
What did you do for performance? I am having a hard time finding parts? I have a 93 did you only replace mufflers or was it a full system? Headers? Heads? Intake manifold? Throttle body?

Now I have stock exhaust on my '97 k2500 Suburban 454 vortec and I wanna more sound)) Even my stock Jeep WJ 4.7 sounds better than my 7.4 now, it's a shame.
Well they changed a lot of things for the '99 model year. Mine had a factory Y pipe that took it to single, then went into the flowmaster and came out as dual. It had the stock factory exhaust when I bought it. Maybe yours doesn't have a Y pipe to cut costs.

Sounds like you might need a new Fan Clutch!! Rotate the fan while the truck isnt running and see how much resistence it has to it. Shouldnt have to much resistence. Also, if that doesnt help, maybe a smaller fan?

As the last GMT400 is not 16 years old, I'm having a hell of a time finding an aftermarket exhaust from the usual suspects (Banks, Magnaflow, Gibson, Borla, JBA, etc.) - most of whom produced a bolt on kit back in the day. Can I as you where you got your exhaust if it's not custom? Model # perhaps? Thanks.
+bigoldburb I've never found a dual catback for the Suburban, probably custom made. I have just a Magnaflow welded into the stock exhaust on my 99 Suburban, and it sounds good, very mellow outside and no drone at all inside. I might be getting a 454 Suburban soon, and if I do I'll have it custom made. If it's got factory stainless pipe, I'll unbolt it and keep it intact and have a shop make all new pipe. If it's not, I'll have the muffler cut off and run just the cat and a Magnaflow glasspack with the stock tailpipe, I don't need duals.
are you sure you have the 40 series because my 350 is louder it may just be the sound on the camera but you can go check out my exhaust video and see what i mean
@AureliaMetal Really? I have a 96 Suburban with a 454 that just crossed the 204,000 mile mark. Empty on the highway it gets up around 15, I can hook a trailer on it and drag a John Deere 1010 Dozer down the highway at 70mph and still get 12 mpg.

From what I’ve experienced backpressure gives you good low end torque and no back pressure gives you better top end.

The 40 series are sweet. Just put a 40 on my wifes Jeep Grand with the 5.2, and it also sounds really nice for just a single.
Cool truck wish mine had a 454 in it I got the 350 vortec 16 MPG in town around 22 on highway

Not a lot of horsepower difference between engines but the torque is great!!

Wow!! I dream of that mileage. I have even changed the engine with a lower mileage one and still get crap gas mileage.

Shouldn't have pimped out the suburban, they didn't make very many of the 454 models (even though the motors we're junk)
