Singer's name is Che Aimee Dorval (canadian folk/rock singer) who has been on a few of his records. Recommend checking out Mountain Top - Dunlop Session which is a side project Devin and Che did called Casualities of Cool. The older guitarist is Mike Keneally who played with Frank Zappa. Drummer is Morgan Ågren who also has played with Zappa. Keyboardist plays with a progressive metal band Haken. Basist is actually primarily a youtuber and sension musician named Nate Navarro. That's all I know for band members. Saw Devin Townsend play live in Toronto just before covid hit so that was my lasting concert memory over the pandemic.
When i think of Devin Townsend I also think of his 'muse': Anneke van Giersbergen (for example in 'The Retinal Circus'). And Anneke is quite important as the 'Godmother of metal', she inspired many female singers into metal. Try 'Grace' or 'Kingdom' for Devin & Anneke, they probably will be requested in this thread. But for Anneke herself please try her previous band The Gathering: 'TG25 Travel' ua-cam.com/video/Y46Lft_BZxo/v-deo.html and 'TG25 Waking hour' ua-cam.com/video/pUKBV8M_XXE/v-deo.html. You won't be sorry! TG25 was their 25th anniversary show in Nijmegen, a rural university town in the Netherlands, where hundreds of fans from all over the world (North-, Central-, South-America, Asia) flew in and took a train ride just for this show. Or i should say shows, there were 2 consecutive shows, and many had tickets for both, so they exited on one side go left and enter the line for the next. The video's are fan made, but of incredibly professional quality.
I concur! I concur! I concur! I concur! I concur! The other band(s) are/were Strapping Young Lad and Steve Vai’s album Sex and Religion. I believe he was 19ish during the Vai album recording and touring.
Excellent analysis! I suggest you check out "Why" from the same show. It really shows how at home Devin is at stage. One of the best performers I've been lucky enough to experience live.
Love Devin great track welcome to the wall of sound I recommend Grace from the retinal circus shows ft anneke van giersbergen she was the lady singer who inspired Floor Jansen when she was younger so yes great as always 🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love Devin Towns end, when you first hear a song you never know what you are going to get, he can terrify with a lullaby or a love song, and have you in tears of joy with a beautiful Angry and horrific song. It is a mistake to ever think you know who Devin is or what his music is about, because it takes 3 or 4 listens just to understand the basic meanings, even if you have the lyrics in front of you. Simply one of the best performers on the stage today, I will see him next year when he is touring a lot of much smaller vernues in the UK, Having sold out the Albert Hall many times over the years
Great reaction! I hope you keep going with Devin. May I suggest something a little unorthodox: his performance of "Why" during his Quarantine Show (ua-cam.com/video/xsd4ZkFVOHY/v-deo.html). It's lighthearted and fun!
The great thing about Genesis is it's DT-comprehensive. The industrial crunch recalls the Strapping Young Lad he started in 1994, influencing quite a few through its run. The particular riffing style, progressive rhythm changes, wall of sound production, chorals, mix of styles, smart relatable lyrics, incredible drummers, duets with distinctive female vocals - those are all DT hallmarks. Absent from Genesis are DT's near impossible fry vocals and the heavy ambient metal sound of his past. I expect most suggestions you got were in that style - Deadhead (live at RAH), Supercrush, or my favorites Failure and Higher (live at Plovdiv). Other standouts are the most-reacted to Kingdom for its vocals, or Grace which is a metal gospel, I guess? If you want the ultimate in crowd interaction, check out Why? from the same DVD as Genesis... Tough to go wrong, so I hope you come back to DT, on or off this channel.
I was at this show. Devin took out an amazing set of musicians for this. Previously, he's used triggers and tapes, particularly for the female vocals, but for this tour, he wanted to reproduce everything on stage. What you hear on this was made by the musicians and singers on stage.
Getting the same vibe as with e.g. Ayreon. So much musical intelligence packed in those minutes, it's just incredible! And as with Arjen's compositions, the virtuosity on display here in no way diminishes the 'feel' of the song. Love it!
Very happy that you didn't do the "Kingdom" reaction that everyone else on UA-cam has done! Hoping you go further down the Devin Townsend rabbit hole. He's got enough amazing live material to keep you busy for quite some time!
Love your channel, and thanks for the Devin. The drummer is Morgan Agren, he's a fantastic progressive/improv percussionist. He never played double bass in his life, and learned to cover about 30 double bass happy feet songs for that tour. Also Dev's only tour without backing tracks. Everything was played, sung and sample fired by the 10 on stage. And 3 weren't playing instruments Cheers!!
Excellent informative reaction Eric. The "Touch Guitar" player is Markus Reuter who does all kinds of experimental and avant-garde music with the likes of "The Stick Men", "The Crimson Projekct" and many others. One of Devin's many talents is recognizing talent. He is also able to attract the best musicians with his reputation. He's a perfect leader. He knows how to maximize people's talent, and make them want to go through the wall for him. He's usually used a lot of backing tracks to recreate his "Wall of Sound". But for this tour he wanted to strip all that away and just get to the heart and soul with a great band only. So he cherry-picked musicians who he knew could keep up with him. During a few nights on the tour, they actually played "Disco Inferno" note-perfectly and merged it into "The Black Page". Just think about that for a minute... I think Frank Zappa himself is the only other person who could pull that off. This is a very deep dive. Welcome in.
Worth checking out the official video as well if you haven’t already. It’s pretty wild. It shows a literal visual representation of what Devin sees with each section.
SLICK LITTLE BOYS! Ahahahaha amazing. I hope his next band is called exactly that lol. It was Strapping Young Lad, but my god if there was ever a better name out there, you just plucked it from the aether.
An amazing live rendition indeed, but that's a song you definitely have to experience the studio version of (with headphones of course) to fully appreciate
Great reaction and review! 5 of the musicians playing here (Dev/Mike/Morgan/Che/Nathan) played on the album, Empath. Genesis is just at the start of that album, which is phenomenal, and covers much more Dev's extensive explorations of every possible style. You might be interested to know that Empath had 3 drummers! Morgan is fabulous, but Samus Paulicelli and Anup Sastry take your breath away in other ways. Check out their own YT channels where they have recordings of a couple of the tracks they laid down for Empath. Thoroughly recommend along with all his other material! It's a rabbit hole.....
Devin has always had incredible drummers in his bands. The extreme metal band you were eluding to was Strapping Young Lad. He had Gene Holgan at that time, phenomenal drummer! Check that material out, particularly "City", and "Alien". He employed Ryan Van Poederooyen for a lot of his progressive metal material, another fantastic drummer!
If I may recommend... to have a peek into his versatility: check out his stab at a Disney song = "Why?". Disney as in sound, maybe, but not in lyrics and meaning. The official video is a cartoon and quite interesting, and should be entertained, but maybe not here? I wouldn't complain, but that's me. No, check out the excerpt from his first (free) Covid-"concert" he did from home while fundraising for first responders or something like that. Can't remember on the spot, but it's easy to check. Anyway, he did that solo but with background tape as he often does (to achieve his "Wall of sound"), shifting between three different camera angles with the help of a X-box controller he borrowed from his son. I fervently hope for some "I concur" here, but I guess it won't happen. Another suggestion is "Deep Peace" live from Plovdiv.
Devin way too talented for his own good. Tough for mainstream audiences to Catch on. And it’s hard to Tour with that stage show as well. But his fans who get it are rabid. Faith with Anneke would be a good place to go next

I second checking out Casualties of Cool, best music for driving down a desert highway at midnight
@@solarwinds9363 forgot Morgan played drums for that project.

Lol. Strapping Young Lad, but Slick Little Boys works too.
Love Devin Townsend, for live performances you need to check out his song Grace from "The Retinal Circus" or Stormbending from from Plovdiv ruins

What I dig about this song is Devin Townsend in a tutu.
Can't beat that.
Except maybe Marko Hietala in a leather kilt.

Come to think of it... perhaps it's not that unorthodox. It's Devin Townsend after all. :-)

Oh, I concur! I scrolled earlier, and didn't find any and wrote that suggestion myself. Typical.

This is a great reaction. I’m subbing for the hopes of more Devin Townsend reactions (whenever you get around to it)
Forever grateful I got to see this set in Finland. One of the greatest shows I've ever witnessed.
Strapping Young Lads (1994-2007), Devin Townsend Project (2008-2018), Devin Townsend Band (2003-2007)
Thank you for that additional info!
Cheers!

Devin also "sung" with Steve Vai. "Still my bleeding heart" is etched in my memory.
Heavy Devy is a cornucopia of musical genius!
