  • Trying to learn how to speak dog language? Then this video from Chewy.com will help you discern the things your dog is trying to tell you. Understanding dog body language is crucial, since we don't have a bark-to-English translator just yet! The four most important factors to take into account are eye position, dog ear position, how open the mouth is and the ever-important dog tail signs. Reading dog body language becomes as easy as reading your favorite book (or Twitter feed, we won't tell) once you've gotten the hang of it. You'll even get to learn about dog tail positions and what they mean, so you can better communicate with your canine and respond to their needs. First off, the eyes. If your doggo is making puppy dog eyes at you then they are ready for play and belly rubs! However if you see the whites of their eyes, or sclera, and their pupils are dilated with a fixed gaze this may mean your furry friend is in face-down defense mode. Also, if a dog doesn't look you in the eyes, don't be offended. It is considered improper pup etiquette to do so with strangers in the dog world. Some other things your dog is trying to tell you are when they're happy or nervous. If their mouth is open like a smile they're likely happy, but if they're yawning excessively this could mean that they're nervous but trying to play it cool. Understanding dog behavior like this is really important if you want to know how to read dog body language overall. Now that we know the basics about how to read dog body language, let's move on to everyone's favorite: discerning different types of dog tail wagging, meaning your favorite wiggly, wagging appendage's position might mean more than you think. Time to talk about different dog tail positions and what they mean. If you dog's tail is pointed up high and vibrating, this is a red flag and means they feel threatened. If you see this dog behavior defuses it right away. If you see a dog tail down that's a sign of submissiveness. Finally, a mid-height wiggly, free moving wag is a sign of happiness and trust.
Now that you've had your lesson, do you want to know what other things your dog is trying to tell you? They're asking for new toys and treats from Chewy.com! Go get them some great gifts to keep their tail wags at mid-height!

The tail between the dog's tails means he's frightened or anxious

A pup with its tail between its legs is certainly a cause for concern.

Why does my dog wag his tail up and down thumping the floor when he knows he’s in trouble

This may be a sign that your dog is not entirely comfortable with the situation and may be feeling anxious or nervous.

You would think this is common knowledge, but people are that stupid, that they don't even consider, dogs communicate, in other ways besides vocal
