Hey! There is a better way to turn benzaldehydes to phenylketones, consider the aldol condensation with benzaldehyde and propionaldehyde to get cyprinal. Then do a bayer-villiger oxidation with oxone and sulfuric acid to get P2P, high yielding and doesn't require the difficult to acquire nitroethane.

Just remember, doing the Bayer villager oxidation you need 3 moles of oxone. About 300 grams of pure stuff. Edit: 500g

Interesting and thanks. I haven't heard of the 'Henry Reaction.' I think that you mentioned that the material might be used in the pharaceutical industry? I've heard that chemists as a rule don't have a license to produce phamas, in the US, but Pharacists do (State licenses). The upshot being that, legally, pharma chemists work under the 'supervision' of the pharma companies. If true, boggle?

How much time i need to incrase during dropwhise benzaldehyde addition while scaling it with 300x value. You saying over 2 minutes slowly add but how should be the processes for 864ml benzaldehyde ? How much time it would take during adding that kind of scaling multiplying.? Is it need to be added dropwhise already? Whole 864ml benzaldehyde? And the 8 hour timing need to be incrase? If it would incrase, can you describe or give the timings for that kind of the scaling?..

For larger scales, it would need to be added much quicker, eg, in 7-10 mins would suffice

You can make P2np without N butylamine. You can substitute 10% methanolic methylamine
Generally any primary aliphatic amine could work instead of n-butylamine, including cyclohexylamine, infact even methylamine could work, however it seems to always result in lower yeilds.

There is a topic about it on thevespiary site, but I can't post it here, if you search you can find it right away roughly 10 ml of benzaldehyde 8 gr nitroethane and 1.5 gr ethanolamine what do you think? Will this reaction work? It is written that the yield is 10 g what can be done to increase the yield thank you!

If I increase the heat as in the video and increase the nitroethane, will the efficiency increase? I would ask anyone to write to me and briefly explain how much is involved and how long it takes to realize this formula with ethanolamine and does it go ethanol as it starts with 5ml or not. Or just put 10 ml of benzaldehyde 8 gr nitroethane and 1.5 gr ethanolamine and 3 hours at 60c and you get p2p. Thank you in advance for your help!!!

Vitride in toluene ( i think vitride is a sodium aluminum hydride in toluene at about 25% composition or so).It works swiftly and yields are very good.

a nitroalkane must be used. nitroethane is really hard to find these days, you better find a supplier or make yours. i prefer option 2. atleast i know what i make and it’s cheaper i guess

You could replace the ethanol and put toluene
It should work but, keeping in mind the b.p and solubility of toluene compared to ethanol..

Organic Synthesis collective volumes gives a 'one pot' reaction where the nitropropene is formed in toluene with n-butylamine and a Dean-Starke tube is used to remove water as the reaction progresses (not actually needed, in practise) and then iron filings are added to the reaction mixture and the flask is set up for reflux with mechanical stirring while adding concentrated hydrochloric acid through a pressure equalized addition funnel (can't use magnetic stirrer due to iron filings being magnetic...) to directly convert the nitopropene to p2p in the same flask. Then, the reflux condenser is replaced with a distillation condenser and steam is introduced to steam distill the p2p right out of the reaction mixture. The steam distillation is rather time consuming unless one uses (or fabricates) a steam generator to inject pressurized (much hotter) steam into the mixture. The toluene/p2p layer can then be separated and the toluene can be removed by simple distillation because the bp of toluene and p2p are quite far apart.
