Hey, I've been playing for about 10 years, including plenty of setbacks (injuries) Re practice, not that often, only when I have time and I'm enthusiastic about learning something new. I don't sit down and noodle very often, quality of practice over quantity really :)
Mike, I couldn't find any info about how you managed to recover from your tendinitis, and then stay healthy. A post about that would be very welcome. Many of us are injured and stories like yours help us keep going in optimism. Thank you for everything!
Please like to bump this comment ;) New album is up for pre order now! Pre orders for ERA are now live, I'm giving away a free track to anyone who pre orders digital or physical from mikedawes.com (excluding Japan and South Korea) I can't wait for you to hear this record! ‘I absolutely adore this record’ - Total Guitar (UK) ‘A terrific album!’ - Guitar World (US) ‘It’s a masterpiece, wow’ - Guitare Seche Mag (France)
Man.. Someday when my caliber is on par, I want to learn this! I feel even Stevie Ray would tip his hat to you on this one tho, like "yeah.. I cant do that.." (Who knows tho, could be some blasphemous assumption on my part, in Stevie's defense) Cheers from Colorado! :)
damn.... been watching this since 6th grade, and now I'm 24.. still giving me the same goosebumps and excitement like the first time I've stumbled upon this magnificent piece. thank you Mike!
first tuned my guitar to DADGAD because of you, and the lick at 0:54 is still my favorite one to play on fingerstyle music. You've inspired me so much man, thank you!
I'm 51 and I still get the same reaction after all these years. Glad the younger generations are still appreciating talent like this. May we continue to enjoy for years to come.
Some people are very very gifted. This guy definitely is. I could practice this for the rest of my life and never be able to do that. Beautiful guitar playing.
Had the pleasure of seeing Mr Dawes live in Cardiff on Sept 11th, unbelievable. Best I've seen in almost 50 years. Outstanding. And he signed my CD, what a real gent :)
I just came from watching Justin Sandercoe, with Mike as a guest. I have to say that I had never seen or heard him before. I was absolutely blown away - which is difficult these days, as I am 58 years old and thought I had heard it all...
@kapooktu Hey thanks for the comment. I took out the ES system and replaced it with an LR Baggs Dual Source. It's a great system, really resistant to feedback. This sound is a combination of the two condensers in shot and the dual source. Mike
@rodron666 Hello thanks for the comment It is just a piece of spruce wood. It's nothing special, but when it is attacked by the fingernails the softer surface gets worn down to reveal the hard grain. This creates a surface similar to that of a guiro. Throughout this track you can see me running my nails over it to create that effect. It is simply a piece of wood glued to the body. Hope this helps!
music is not a competition different people connect to different artists. All we can do is just appreciate these hardworking musicians that sound damn good
Great phrasing, Great percussive fills, Great volume control, perfect blend of techniques for an electric acoustic The new and improved Steve Howe! Love your work!
I've seen Richard Thompson, Michael Hedges, Phil Keagy, Jerry Donahue, Jim Hall , Larry Coryell, Tommy Emmanuel, Tony Rice, Anders Osborne , ........ yada yada yada, and just when I think I've heard / seen it all....a guy like Mike Dawes pops up and just amazes me. I'll never be this good, but it gives me new ideas and something to strive for.
Holy Jesus, Mother Mary, I can't believe what I just saw! How have I missed Mike Dawes for 7 fucking years, and I'm on the net every day...I've watched hundreds of percussive style acoustic players and alot of them Candyrat guys, and NO ONE, comes even close to the level that this dude is reaching., Holy Fucking Shit That Was Amazing!
It’s funny to see how far Mike has come in terms of showmanship and timing. It’s also funny to imagine that this performance could be improved on but his recent renditions of this song are *chef’s kiss*
I'm not a musician or a music expert so who cares what I think but that is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. You have amazing skill my friend. I could listen to this all day long.
An outstanding player brimming with technique and creativity in equal measure. Puts me in mind of another English acoustic legend, the mighty Gordon Giltrap! Hope to see Mike getting the recognition and acclaim his talent so richly deserves in the not too distant future.
Just saw Mike in concert last night in Melbourne, Florida. He opened with this..just as precision in person as in this video, epic. He even autographed my pdf tabs after the show
Blitzing genius going on here - exceeds Michael Hedges - and no one I know came close to him - brilliant technique - but control of melody and mood is stunning - great stuff - will be hunting down cds now - thanks for these posts!
Wow, I just caught the Justin Hayward show on PBS. Justin, as always, was phenomenal. However, this was the first time I saw Mike play, and he was very impressive...tasteful fill-ins, beautiful backing.
Hi Mike, do you give private Online Lessons, i wish you my Coach and i play what you want. Iam intermediat guitar Player. Pleas replay with des or No, it's no Probleme.
Yeah,,,,hell You can learn his tricks but never have his creativity...so Mike Dawes is new name but for me he is the inovator in 21 century...and maybe best guitarist of these days.
You're up there with Al Dimeola,Steve Vai,Allan Holdsworth,Edward Van Halen and possibly Jeff Watson of Night Ranger ! The only thing I can offer is that Jeff uses an eight finger tapping technique of notes on the same string or independently tapping notes with 4 fingers on different strings. It almost sounds like the succession of notes arpegiatted on a flute or some other woodwind instrument.Either way your exceptionally skilled ,Maestro ! Take care and continued success ! ; . )
I think the reason I can't play like Mike Dawes is because I didn't buy my guitar from the same place as he did.... (haha! Seriously though, I love listening to these vids and they're often playing in playlists I create for background music during social events I host; absolutely amazing, Mike! Maybe do a vid of your journey from zero to hero so that others can be inspired to try the same path that got you to where you are today? E.g. how often you practice, how do you 'explore', your go-to places when you were learning your playing styles, etc.)
learning this by ear is taking forever hahaha that little like two second hammer-on lick at 00:42 is where im stuck i got the rest of it...looking forward to that finger tap -_________-
You got a box, you bang on the box. You got strings, you pluck the strings. Stuff kids do all the time. But let someone with some heavy-duty talent at it: a whole different level of "Man! That's the bomb!" I'll keep an eye on you for more of this musical magic. Impressive.
I cannot even begin to describe how happy I am that I live in a world where musicians like this exist.
Good post SQUISHY ...
Wh....What a monster! Youve reached a level any sayain would dream of!!
Guthrie Govan and Mike Dawes😍😍😍

No idea why you're telling us lol
How cool is that...(5 years later…) still living this Mike.

The new and improved Steve Howe! Love your work!
let's see, I've been playin' since a kid and I am 59 and Mike....you blow me away.....genius ..
Spectacular, I’ve been playing 25 years and you make me feel like I need a new guitar and about 10hours p’ day extra practice. Shine On.
All elements come out in the mix well, from the lightest touch to the sharp attack of percussive pops. What a responsive setup, nice playing Mike!
WOW!!!! Mesmerised and speechless. Respect to a Master.🙏💜
I've seen Mike several times live at IGN. I am completely confident that he is capable of anything. I wish he'd show off more. A1 A+++

A day of being lost in acoustic guitar music and I always end up back here! This takes some beating
I just want to say i am inspired by your guitar playing. How you work your strings amazes me. Thanks for sharing your talent
What is there not to like? Even if one was deaf just the movement of his fingers would tell you this guitar playing is brilliant.
Great groove and great timing control. An acoustic guitar player like this is even better than the average electric guitar player.
My favorite song from him
He blew my mind during every part of that
I HAVE NO WORDS
I wish Mike was around when I took guitar lessons in high school; the man is incredible and inspiring! All I can add to that is - WOW!
