Do you think a hungry shark designed to be an ocean vacuum scavenger wouldn't eat a potential prey just because it happens to be a human?!! A shark would eat anything, stay out of the water and leave the sharks alone it's their home.

This never gets old, well said, but they still go in the ocean, I haven’t any sympathy for those who enter the waters ‘knowing’ they are in there, like you say, ‘get out’ it is their home!

@Corey Bryant, that’s exactly what I say as sailor and former diver. Same about what goes in at the gulf of Biscaya and the strait of Gibraltar with orcas since two years. WE enter voluntarily and willingly THEIR natural habitat. We have the choice, accept the risks knowingly, they don’t have a choice and often they don’t know us.
It’s also our way of behaviour and interaction with these animals, humans think they are the superior species and we can take and claim whatever we want. That’s so untrue… nature still we can’t beat, these animals are part of it, like the winds, storms, earthquakes and what else earth throws at us. We should start accepting it and respecting it, together not against each other but funnily that doesn’t even work among ourselves, how it then should work with animals?

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side it was comin' back from the island of Tinian, just delivered the bomb. 1100 men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger, 13 footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know...was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light the sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups and the idea was, the shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland, baseball player. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. He'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day a Lockheed Ventura saw us and come in low and 3 hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, 1100 went in the water, 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway....we delivered the bomb.

This have been mostly likely oceanic whitetips, they are the most dangerous sharks in the open water. They are opportunistic hunters, they hunt also in pods not like great whites or tiger sharks, they are most likely loners. Oceanic whitetips are known for their aggressiv and hostile behaviour, also are they very persistent and hard to scare away like most other sharks. “Attacks” of great whites, tiger sharks or hammerheads are most likely close to coastal areas, rarely on open seas. In deep waters it’s most likely oceanic whitetips or silky sharks, especially the oceanic whitetip is known for even following boats / vessels often for miles in the hope to find food. They swim slow under the surface and cover areas of hundred square miles a day to find food and they are often in larger schools to find.

One day a couple of GIs found a crate, inside were six hundred pounds of prime Texas steer. At least it once was prime. The Use date was three weeks past, but I was arrogant, I was brash, I thought if I used just the right spices, cooked it long enough...I went too far. I over seasoned it. Men were keeling over all around me. I can still hear the retching, the screaming. I sent sixteen of my own men to the latrines that night. They were just boys. Bobby Colby, all that kid wanted to do was go home. Well he went home alright, with a crater in his colon the size of a cutlet. Had to sit him on a cork the eighteen-hour flight home! I’m sure that’s the speech given in the film Jaws. I’ve watched these films so many times. But cannot think of his name I always thought he was heroic. The he cannot stay down with four but he did. The film was fantastic until the model shark appeared. It was so unreal it was hilarious but at the same time really scary. Even now in my 70s I only have to have something touch me while in the sea, I panic then laughing as it was just a bit of seaweed. Abroad I’d never go in if I could see fish to me it’s bait. It could draw in something much bigger.
Now we are getting sightings of great whites around the UK. I expect it will be blamed on global warning. Rather then the huge increase in the seal population. I believe they are a major food source for them. We have around the UK a really huge seal population. It’s going to pull in predators like the white shark. We have Orcas attacking boats already in Europe we are a short swim away for them. They are seen up here in Scotland a lot it’s a frightening thought that it’s a learnt behaviour. They are teaching other Orcas how to attack the boats. On top of that sharks no longer just basking sharks.
I remember seeing the boats going out shark fishing from Looe in Cornwall. I’m sure there was a prize for the biggest one caught. It all got stop due to the population coming into protected status.
After the film Jaws I could not forget the shark fishing. I was an adult by then, but it made me scared to swim in the sea in Cornwall. You get over it but now great whites are being reported. I’m not going in anymore lol both my children and their families live in Cornwall. They laugh off the reports as just that. Reports no evidence

I swam in a swimming pool that had a baby shark in it once. He was just a baby, very small, half-tame because he had been kept in an aquarium all his life. They said don't be afraid, you can swim with him. I held my breath for as long as I could (not very long) and swam alongside him under water, reached out once and petted him. He wasn't fazed by that, just kept swimming next to me. They said he likes the interaction with humans because he's lonely by himself in the pool.
The only time that I ever thought a shark was cute. The rest of the time I just want to get away from them as fast as possible.
They told me that they were getting ready to release him in the ocean, so I hope he's been having a good shark life out there and not getting into any trouble. Hope he has the sense to stay away from boats and people because they would not understand that he's half tame and they might hurt him.

Steve Dingman Me too! I am 38 now so it had been out years before I saw it but when I watched it with my dad, my life changed forever. Lol. I was terrified and way up into my teenage years I’d think about it everytime I took a bath or got into a swimming pool! I would be in the bath and imagine a little beady black eye swimming past the tub drain! When I was smaller I would think of how a shark may bust up through the tub and break it to pieces.
To this day, I never get in the ocean past the lower part of my calves. Usually my ankles. I went to Jamaica and tried to snorkel with my husband out in the water but it was way too scared to enjoy it and within 5-10 minutes at the most I was back on the shore.
I don’t let my kids get out far in the ocean and wouldn’t let them in at all but my husband insists they be allowed to get in. What’s so crazy is we used to always go on vacation to New Smyrna beach Florida because my family lives there. It’s shark bite capital of the entire world! 5 summers ago we all went together to New Smyrna and witnessed a shark frenzy! There were hundreds of sharks! No exaggeration. There were little fish that looked like minnows all over the water and there were so many of them it looked like oil in the water. The sharks were at the shoreline to eat them.
I don’t go there on vacation anymore.

      @dianehall2248 3 роки тому +5

Well, you are actually entering an environment in which it can live, rather than specifically its territory; it's not as if you are willingly going into a patch of ocean you know already has a big shark hanging around in it. In fact most of these attacks are because the sharks in question are extending their range into areas they used to not be expected in. It would be like if you enjoyed going for walks in the countryside and one day a bear mauled you and the response from some keyboard warrior was that you had invaded its territory and thereby put yourself in a risky situation. The sharks are just doing what they have always done, but in most cases it's not that the people are being irresponsible or dumb either. What they should do is install shark nets and have very clearly designated swimming zones. Then if people swim outside of those and get attacked they can say they were fairly warned and had an option of doing what they were doing without the risk but chose not to use it.

Dad used to wade fish in the gulf but when a shark took his fish he had on a string that he had caught he quit and only fished from our boat. Dad said he has seen sharks as big our boat which was for offshore fishing. They would go out to the rigs and fish close by. Dad loved to fish all his life, I miss him so much. Love you dad ❤🎣

I'm sorry for those who have suffered or lost loved ones from shark attacks but culling sharks is not an answer, nor is it moral, considering that millions upon millions are killed every year anyway.
People must understand there is a risk when going in the ocean and a person either accepts that risk & responsibility for anything that happens or use a swimming pool.

@Videos of the past Every shark attack is a tragedy for the individual, their family & friends, that goes without saying.
However, if there is an unusual increase in the frequency of aggressive shark attacks the solution will lie in discovering why its happening, what factors are causing it, etc as sharks are just being sharks & reacting to their environment.
Without that knowledge taking any active action such as culling sharks, as opposed to passive action i.e barriers to prevent sharks entering a given area, could result in any number of unknown things happening from it causing a total collapse of local marine eco-systems even causing more attacks.

Jennifer Brewer I also hate it when they call a shark attack a "random attack". I mean, I'm pretty sure that much is a given. It's not like the shark is swimming around with his buddy the night before talking about "ya know Nemo, i heard Bill Schmidt is gonna be swimming with his girlfriend up around Norfolk beach tomorrow, and I think I'm gonna bite his left leg off".
Nemo- " I think you're onto something there Jim, that sounds like a pretty good idea. Hell, I might swim up from the right after you're done with him and _really_ mess with him".
