How much stabiliser do I need to cut for my hoop?
~ by Martyn Smith - Sweet Pea Creative Design Technician ~
For many years, I worked in commercial embroidery and the waste factor with stabiliser was exceptionally low. It was all about “unit cost” and the ability to keep manufacturing stateside instead of offshore. The stabiliser was bulk cut for the different hoop sizes and I still do most of this when prepping a project.
Using the inner hoop of the chosen frame as a size guide, measure and cut a further 2cm (¾”) out from each of the sides. Depending on what you are going to embroider, 2cm (3/4”) is more than enough to cut beyond all the edges of the inner hoop.... Also you can sew together all your strips with washaway thread your stabilizer bits use for smaller projects like mug mats etc.
Great idea for being less wasteful. Especially now with everything costing so much more these days. I will give it a try. Thanks!
I own more Sweet Pea designs than any other design companyfor in-the-hoop embroidery. I love the complete, easy to follow instructions and videos. This one is brilliant! I too am frugal and hate the waste associated with machine embroidery. I've tried several ideas but none make as much sense as what you have laid out here. Thank you for your ongoing attention to detail and for sharing it with your subscribers.
Excellent ideas thank you. I am a miser at the best of times and I didn’t like the waste on stabiliser. So appreciate your video.
I would never have thought to put pins in the stabilize outside the hoop! Great tip!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh my goodness this was eye-opening! Thank you so much for a wonderful demonstration; it's a game changer.
You are so welcome!
Can't wait to try these ideas out - thank you so much! You can always learn something new no matter how long you've been sewing.
Brilliant idea for hooping. Thanks for sharing it with us. I will try it. Tx/PR

Thanks Martyn, as always you are a wealth of knowledge. I thought that I was pretty good at reducing wastage but you've given me yet another way to keep materials out of the dump.
Glad to help
Less waste and more $$in your pocket!
Thank You Martin ... I think you are amazing!!! You are so down to Earth!! Your explanations and directions are wonderful and easy to follow. You aren't afraid to give your hard earned tips away so we don't make the same mistakes ... (not that I think you would make a mistake!!!! 😏😏🙄🙄😘). Great video Martin!
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant! I hate wasting stabilizer.
OMG you just gave me a use for my Grandma’s T-Pins that I inherited. 💜 Just discovered your videos & I love them. Thank you & keep them coming. I bought a Stellaire during Covid to learn machine embroidery & I’m hooked.
I'm so glad!
Thank you. I do my best to save stabilizer but you have given me a great way to save even more!
Great to hear!
Genius! I’m all about saving but never considered doing that. You’re a man after my own heart. I’m a new subscriber and look forward to more of your ideas.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you Martin, I have now understood the whole patch stabiliser. I had missed one step (stitch after sticking it place. One comment I would make, I use my edge joining foot when joining the wadding, so it stays side by side. Again, thank you it was worth me tearing myself away from my in the hoop. Off to be even more economical.
Awesome tips thanks, appreciated for those of us home hobby machine users in countries where 1m if decent stabiliser costs the same as half a weeks grocery bills!
We totally hear you on this. Saving resources and $$$ is crucial for many.
I do this with prit stick. Works a treat.
That's a great idea.
Have you tried stickyback? Good for multi hooping fast. Use the sticky back to hoop, then you keep the picture frame space left after first block and add a 7 inch square of stabilizer for each of the next 6 inch block design. Saves rehooping every time. Dont have to pull the whole tging out just put your patch of stabilizer over top. Works for tshirts too.
Thanks for the tip! It's not a stabiliser we use much due to price. Thanks for suggesting this.
@@sweetpeamachineembroideryd4694 i use it for shirts. I reuse it over and over to float shirts. Especially if a name logo .
So you dont actually use much . I just got taight that way whrn i started 30 yrs ago. It was hard to find last year, my original roll lasted me over 20yrs.its sticky back tearaway but it has a special name . I will try to find out
🥰

Great idea 💡
Thank you! 😊
Great idea - thanks Martyn
Good idea thank you.
You are welcome!
I just made my own wash away stabilizer, search on youtube diy bio plastic, its a gelatin and glycerin recipe and its easy, worked perfectly, rinsed out in less than 30 seconds, i also use paper towel as a stabilizer i separate it down to 1 or 2 ply then throw it in the wash afterwards, the cheaper the towel the easier it is to wash off ive noticed, i hope everyone can save some money using these tricks, stabilizing materials are too expensive and too much waste, hope this will help someone xx Nadine
Wow! Those are some wonderful tips Nadine.
Great ideas - got to try the paper towel trick
Great ideas. Thank you.
Awesome vid. Lots of these about but this one really helped. Thanks again love Sweet Pea. Dee from Bright Victoria.
Great idea and beautifully presented.
Fabulous idea
Would masking tape work?
Hi Martyn, Thanks for clear explanation. Where did you get the roll of double sided tape. Must get some of those pins. Did you just float the blue fabric and where do I get the design you did in your machine. I just bought the dinosaur book pillow pattern.. thanks
Hello Viddy, the 6mm (1/4") double sided tape is make by X-Press IT that is used in scrap booking. The pins are upholstery pins but clover also sell them but smaller. We float a lot of our blocks and projects and this particular file was a test stitch out that we didn't end up using alas. Don't forget to post your dinosaur pillow when it's complete.
Great video. Thank you Martyn
Brilliant, thank you for sharing x
Brilliant and a great money saver! Thank you!!!
Thank you
Awesome, Oh why has it taken so long to find this tutorial
Excellent idea thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Bonne idée. Merci pour votre partage.
Je vous en prie.
Genius!
We hate waste... :)
Love your $$$$ saving methods - What kind of medium weight cutaway to you use?
Great video! Thank you for sharing!
Does this method work with tear away? I always thought that puncturing stabilizer with a needle might cause it to weaken and tear. I’ve been floating one sheet of tear away under the hoop with one layer of poly mesh in the hoop, I will definitely give this a try for the layer of tear away I’m floating under the hoop, thank you so much!
Brilliant! Thank you!
Thank you!!
Thank you for the video
When u mentioned attaching 2 pieces of batting together instead of using a zigzag stitch u use a triple stitch. My triple stitch is a straight stitch. Not sure I understand
Triple zig-zag stitch on the sewing machine.
Great video, thank you!
Great idea! What kind of rotary cutters are you using?
Outback Sue I’m using Fiskers...
Is it a cut away medium weight stabilizer?
Thanks great tips
Great Video Thank you 👍👍
Please tell me what the T pins are for?
They prevent the slippery stabiliser from moving in the hoop when the hoop is removed for the fabric to be trimmed. We use T-pins if they are available or you can use normal long quilting/dressmaking pins. It's mainly to prevent slippage.
To much work, lol
Time is money, but thank you!
Duh! Triple stitch. Brilliant! Stabilizer and batting manufacturers are surely angry with you. Ha! I love to be frugal. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Great ideas! Thank You!
Glad you like them!
Thank you!
