Funny you post a ZJ video, just a week after I found my old 96 ZJ sitting in the pick a part yard near me :(. Was happy to see it and sad to see it at the same time. When I sold it back in 2010, it had 232k on it, the viscous coupler in the t-case was shot and the driver's and front passenger seats were torn up....They were totally trashed when I saw it last week, and oddly enough the key was sitting in it...I happened to have my jump pack, and just by chance thought hmm, wonder if I could get it to power up enough to read the odometer...it did, and the odometer reading was 561,016 miles...so it ran several more miles after I sold it. Sad to see the end of its life though. I see white 96 ZJ's all the time but mine had an odd front tow bar on it that was very easily noticeable, and an odd switch under the dash I never figured out what it went to...so those 2 things gave away that it was my old Jeep long before I checked the VIN. I miss that Jeep, it spent more time offroad in the mud than it did on the highway, and even at 232k I wasn't afraid to jump in it and drive it across several states...my boss at the time just kept after me about selling it to him...so I did, he didn't have it a year and sold it..the last owner drove 180 miles round trip to and from work pretty much daily with it, used to see it sitting behind the store he worked at all the time....then suddenly it was gone, guess now I know why....windshield had "BAD TRANS" marked on it...well I guess that old 42RE had enough LOL...honestly surprised it didn't fail on me given how I beat on it, and the stuff I towed with it, seemed pretty bulletproof while I owned it...wish I only knew back then how easy transfer case swaps were and how easy it was to replace the seat upholstery, I would have kept that Jeep. 4L I6 never let me down, only a bad starter left it dead in a parking lot...luckily never let me down in the middle of nowhere LOL. The starter and a leaking radiator were the only 2 issues it ever had...regular oil/filter changes, and transmission services every 45k, and diff fluid changes every time I got into deep mud/water with it, transfer case services every time I had the transmission serviced...if I knew about the transfer case swaps I would have went with the 242 Selec-Trac.
Oh and my copy of your 98 ZJ went to the crusher a few months ago...replaced it with a 2008 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.6L V8 4x4. That poor Jeep just had every single electronic/electrical problem that's known to Jeep, as well as the dreaded 42RE problems :(....It had Selec-Trac and the rear limited slip too, when the transmission died I was pretty pissed off as I had put 4700 miles on it in the 3 years I had owned it, and all of them were highway miles and a couple trips on a gravel back road to a small town.
Thinking my next Jeep might be a WJ with Selec-Trac, or an XJ with Selec-Trac. Or...if I can find a Comanche with Selec-Trac...I've only seen 1 that was for sale, I've spotted a couple but they were no longer operational sitting in scrap yards, sadly the bodies on them were in pretty dang good condition given they were 30+ years old.

OMG changing from 24-hour to 12 hour on my Vic was so easy I have driven nothing but ZJ's since about 99 I've never had one that wasn't in 24-hour mode drives me crazy it was so easy to change but I would never have known to hold the set button while turning the ignition on absolutely the best information on Jeep Grand Cherokees ever. This year I was able to buy my dream Jeep 98 5.9 limited you are my hero thank you so much.

Good to see you, hope everyone is well. I have a very small leak in 2000 wj. I sure hope it's not a crack in the head, or heater core, will be doing a color die, hope to fine it , OMG I've never had such a hard time finding a leak must be very very small. I even changed the reservoir bottle.

    • @davidbhall1042

@@ProjectDanH results back, pressure test ok checked core also, on wj theres a drain tube where heater core is and that tank was dry so we ruled that out. Found out I was only loosing antifreeze when cooled down and dripped in the exhaust, so when it ran you couldn't tell. Ever so slight. It would just burn away. When its apart I'll try to get some pictures, what we find. So far I do believe head has a small crack.

A common fault I noticed with VICs in mine and the salvage yards is the traces erode away then short out. What I did to fix mine was remove the remains of the traces, then soldiered wires in their places. My first try at soldering and it works great now!

The VIC was common in the Limited models, the Laredos tended to have the cheap useless thing down there, not exactly sure that it did anything at least the one in my 98 ZJ didn't do anything other than tell me if I was in full time or part time mode for 4WD LOL. I don't think anything on the Jeep outline lit up, at least nothing in mine ever did...but my 98 ZJ also had pretty much every electronic/electrical issue known to Jeeps as well as the normal failing 42RE, and lower engine knock from the 4L I6 weird, but it was terrible.
