- This video is a demonstration on how to identify and fix a common part failure in the 2003 Ford Expedition 5.4L Triton Engine that generates the error codes P0171 and P0174. These error codes are synonymous with a vacuum leak somewhere but most commonly associated with the failure of a little PVC elbow that can easily be replaced for anyone capable of doing it themselves. Generally the check engine light or CEL will come on and the vehicle will shutter slightly at idle as the onboard engine computer module or ECM, attempts to compensate with a lean mixture of fuel and air.

This was the FIX.
I went to autozone, got the $7.99 part (# 46017 ,Help PCV Valve Elbow). Took 3min, too remove and replace.
Horrible price, for a $0.50 piece of rubber...and it says MADE IN CHINA in LARGE LETTERS. But it is done!
But I am eternally grateful for your help in posting this. Car is running fine, with no Check light. Thanks!

Glad this video helped. As an FYI, there is also one other rubber boot that fits on the same tube assembly that connects behind the air-intake where it meets the throttle body. This should also be checked for leaks, if changing the elbow doesn't fix this problem. However, the elbow seems to be the most common problem for this error code.
If i wanted to get it on Amazon how could i find the right one? There a way to get the proper size?
finally someone else that understands... cost all of 3 cents to manufacture and charge $9 for it. but yes.. still cheaper that having someone else do the job.
Dude you are amazing. Helped me find the issue ASAP. I paid 11 bucks for my elbow at pep boys. Mine was melted aswell. After installing the new one I realized what melted it. The heater valve is right on top of it. My heater valve was leaking coolant right on top of it. So if anyone has a melted one. Check to see when your car is on if your heater valve is leaking coolant.

This is precisely a problem that I currently have in my 2003 Ford Expedition 4.6L and finally glad to see someone was able to show where it is. Not even my mechanic was able to find it or tell me what's causing the P0171, P0174 codes. Thanks for the video.
I just replaced that elbow with a piece 5/8” fuel line and also the elbow that connects to the pcv valve on the valve cover. They were both cracked and crumbled.
Your video saved me my friend. Unfortunately, I had already spend hours troubleshooting and I replaced all of my O2 sensors. I was about to kick this rig to the curb. Thank you sir!
There is another rubber elbow connector located behind the engine under the firewall the access is hard but it is doable.I did mine for an hour but it is rewarding.What a feeling .No more 171 and 174 code and my expy is due for smog.Thank you Jesus for helping me find the caused.

This is exactly what was wrong with my '04 expedition. Wish I saw this before replacing the mass airflow sensor, oh well.
Replaced all the elbows on my 2003 4.6. Still get the same codes every so often.
Generally these error codes are caused by the cracked elbows in the vacuum lines. However, if it's still throwing the error codes after changing them out, then you will need to take it to a mechanic and have them do a smoke test where they inject smoke into the valve covers etc. and check for leaks that way.

Car lo You are most certainly welcome. This engine/vehicle is a nightmare to work on, from simple things like changing the oil filter to swapping out engine coils. Anytime I can help make a difference to help someone else out, while saving them aggravation and frustration, I'm glad to do so.

+Kirill Maurits I had a coil go bad so I decided to replace them all with a set of Rally's. Probably better than the OEM originals. However, installing them is not easy with all the crap you have to maneuver around to try to get them in - especially under the firewall. So I paid an experienced Ford mechanic to replace my spark plugs along with the coils as these are known to break in the 5.4 L Triton engines upon removal.
@diyguy1808 think they were only breaking on th 04+. Did my dad's 03 last week still with the factory spark plugs and none of them broke. They all had about .080 of a gap tho

I had spent hours looking for the leak, and especially the elbow, which is hard to locate with all the hoses, pipes in the tight confinement.
+David Pace The easiest way to find where to look is to start the vehicle, and begin to spray starting fluid in certain areas around your vacuum lines. When the idle picks up and goes faster, you found the area. Now all you do is feel around for brittle, cracked lines or for a hole.
I have a 2003 Expedition with a 4.6L V8 showing codes PO171 and PO174. However I'm not seeing that same tubing where the PCV elbow is cracked at all. I have no clue where it's at on my vehicle. I keep seeing a shit ton of videos on UA-cam but everyone has 5.4, maybe that's why Idk. I'm hoping it's just the PCV elbow and not my intake gaskets.
Generally those error codes point to a vacuum leak somewhere. I would start by following each of those vacuum lines, which are all tied together, and check every connection for leaks. Use a spray bottle filled with soapy water or something like Windex will work too if it's too difficult to get access to the lines up underneath the engine housing.
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition myself and have the P0171 code. The service engine light, not alone from this incident, but from vehicles I've owned over the years to buy my own OBD scanner. I really should have purchased ones years ago. Now I can check a code right away rather than going to the auto parts store to scan it. I hope my issue is just that little elbow and I'm thinking it is as I had the coil over plug and plugs replaced recently. I just don't have the time I used to, to be able to do a few hour project.

What happens when you change EVERY vacuum line with brand new ones, changed out the elbow with the factory replacement, put RTV sealer around each connection, put clamps on every vacuum line connection AND changed the PCV valve and the codes return? When I pull off any line, do nothing to it, and replace it, then clear out the check engine light, it works for 2 weeks then starts idling rough again and back on comes the check engine light. I've done this 6 times and every time it's good for two weeks then running rough again. Every part is replaced with brand new and the hell sealed out of it. What's the problem?

If after going though all that, then it's possible one of the engine manifold gaskets has been breached. The Triton engines have two engine manifolds and are a major deal to replace. The only way to know for sure is to take it to a shop and have them do a smoke test and check for leaks that way.
If you have patched the vacuum lines but are suspect they are still leaking then bite the bullet and buy the entire vacuum line which runs around $35-40 online.
This part fits for my Expedition but is probably similar for most Fords with the 5.4 L Triton. I've outlined the most common failure areas.

I replaced the O2 Sensors (Drivers Side back/front) last Sunday as I kept getting this code (P0174).
I thought it was gone as the code didn't pop back on for over a week, I drove everyday maybe 20-30 miles nothing super far... and it's BACK!

I replaced the elbow, but the piece to the right, the straight piece that flares out on both ends is also melted, what part is that? My auto part store can't even identify it ..
It sounds like it's the PVC Hose Connector Tube. If you buy it from a dealer you're going to end up paying $80 or more. However, I would try ebay first to see what you can find. I've seen it run around $30 with free shipping.Just make sure what you buy is for your engine model and year.

I have error codes P0741&P0735. What does this mean? How would these be resolved without rebuilding the entire transmission?
Your question is off topic to this thread. Do a Google search for your error code and you should be able to find some information on your issue - which all appear to be transmission related.

Diy guy... I have the P0171 system too lean Bank 1 and P0174 Bank 2, is it two different elbow hoses?
A single vacuum leak would give an error for both banks. However, the hose assembly that connects with the elbow, should be checked for leaks as well.
If you can't find it check your MAS sensor
DIY Guy I have been having the same problem but I just took the pcv elbow off and it looks fine almost new looking, should I still replace it if there is no holes or splits?
There are a couple of other weak points on the vacuum lines you may need to check, especially behind the throttle body. It's a little bit like an octopus and connects to a number of points on the engine. Just follow the hard plastic tubes to their termination and check for leaks.

Why won't my fuel hand move off of empty when it is full of file? 2005 Ford expedition 5.4 liter. I replaced fuel pump and drivers fuel pump relay.
In my car there is a regulator assembly opportunity the fuel pump. It also has a float and the fuel pump one is used to compare the difference.
Is that the same for a 2001 model?
Possibly stupid question here but, I didn't see a size listed on the package, so if I find that it's the elbow on my '03 Expedition w/ the 5.4L it should be a one size fits all?

The Dorman PCV End Assembly is a standard part that fits Ford model's, and can be found at any Oreilly's auto store. Item #46022 for $10.00. Notice the packaging says "Ford" on it.

Diy guy....are you still on here?I have a question.My 01 expedition threw those codes, but was still running fine until a month ago.Then it started idling funny and having no power, also on freeway bogs down.I found hole on the boot connecting pcv metal line to back of throttle body.Fixed boot, idles way better but other problems i mentioned are still there.Help
Could be a bad engine coil, especially if it's intermittent. Is it still throwing the same codes, even after fixing the hole in the boot going into the throttle body?
