I've always been of the belief that Hackett was the main reason for the team's failure. Not just in-game, but especially out of it. Good coaching is how a bad team turns to a good team. Look at the Lions; they went from historically bad defense to holding the Vikings to 23 points in a game where JJ had over 200 yards. The roster didn't change, the players on the team got better.
Same with the Rams. They were horrible for like a decade plus before Sean McVay got there. They went from 4-12 to 11-5 his first season with basically the same team and have played in two Super Bowls and won one in the span of 5 seasons with him. The quality of the head coach absolutely is one of the biggest X factors in a team being good. I actually think Russ can still do well with the right coach.

There have been just 4 coaches in NFL history, the entire 100+ years of the game, fired before the end of their first year, to my knowledge. There have been some like Lou Holtz and Petrino that resigned before their first year ended but they were not fired. John Whelchel for Washington in 1949, Pete McCulley for SF in 1978, Urban Meyer in 2021, and now Hackett this year. McCulley, and Hackett were fired based entirely on underperformance. Whelchel was fired because he wasn’t a football mind (he was a war veteran) but actually a great motivator of players apparently, they went 3-3-1 in his 7 games there. And meyer, obviously was fired because of scandal. Not totally unprecedented but it’s been nearly 45 years since a head coach was fired in his first season for underperformance/lack of performance. Circumstances to the 49ers that year were almost identical to the broncos, remember that year they had traded for OJ Simpson and he was expected to be the leader and playmaker to take the niners to great highs. But, never happened obviously. He was old by that point and the team led by “worst GM in NFL history” Joe Thomas collapsed to 2-14.
Joe Thomas was a great player evaluator, his problem was any time he got even a little executive power, he goes on a massive power trip because his ego was both bloated and fragile.
Steve Wilks is another guy that should give Hackett some hope. He just seemed lost in Arizona, but he’s got a Panthers team that was destined for a top 5 pick playing waaayyyy above their talent level. It’ll be a Mark Davis level move if Carolina doesn’t hire himS
