Dear Hans, I greatly enjoy your channel and admire your truth seeking candour which I am sure all your fans value. Personally I have found some of your most engaging content is based on you telling us when you have got it wrong - it’s incredibly valuable. In that context may I suggest a video where you talk about your course correction away from room management DSP, which you were a big fan of initially, to today’s position where all unnecessary DSP is to be avoided - it is quite a big shift and one I have made with you mothballing my MiniDSP studio - what do you think?

Hans, what a great efficient review of DMP A8. Thank you for your knowledge and time. Since you last year already reviewed Lindemann musicbook combo, can you tell anything about comparision of sound, between these two devices? Would be gratefull, because I am in crossroad between these two devices+buying an amp if A8 would be chosen.
These are completely different beasts. I have a slight preference for the Lindemann.
I got this for about a week. I use it as a dac/streamer/preamplifier to a Hypex Nilai power amplifier. I am very happy with the performance. It is a much better value if all of its functions are utilized.

I bought a Nilai to try it out & I've been pretty amazed with its performance. I was thinking of buying a new streamer for it. I wasn't considering using it's preamp section but definitely would if it's nice enough. Thank you
@@NosEL34 Hi, i still have the DMP-A8 but not the Nilai. I have since then moved to a Plinius integrated amplifier. If you want a minimalist system that does it all with just 2 components go for it. The A8 is worth it even if you will not use the preamp section. That said the preamp in A8 is good enough.

Another great video. Finally someone who agrees with me about DSP... It has no place in a true audiophile system. I've had three pretty high-end preamps in a McCormack, Conrad Johnson and currently an awesome Audio Research MET1....and none of them have even so much of a tone control. That is not a coincidence.
To the folks who were wondering about whether you need the A8 if you're just going to connect to another DAC... My answer is only if you need the inputs this has. Otherwise the A6 standard will be more than sufficient and save you a bit of money. You'll still get their most important function: the great streaming engine and qpp.
I do wish you had shown the (audio,/volume) menu system for the A8 a little bit more because it is different from A6 in that you can't expressly bypass the volume control like you can on the A6... But according to ES if you turn it to maximum that accomplishes the same thing. I still would prefer to see a bypass.
The only reason I haven't jumped on this yet because I have the aforementioned preamp and an Oppo 205, between the two it covers 99% of what a streamer does, EXCEPT stream Qobuz in the highest resolution. But for this unit, I wouldn't use the R2R volume (due to preamp), of course the useless DSP, and last but not least, sadly they changed the unique multi-channel HDMI capability of the A6 to a 2ch i2s in the A8 which I will never use.

Hi, same here, didn't find but would like a bypass option. Also, digital inputs cannot directly routed through to the digital output. I am using an external DAC and was hoping to control via ES app, which is nicely done.
Always not sure what makes more sense, to control volume on integrated amplifier or on ES...

It would sound less but that goes for all streamers but the best.
This is the streamer I want. It's got everything. It's the only one that makes sense & that has everything needed yet doesn't cost several to tens of thousands of dollars.

It's a relevant question. To get Roon certification the streamer - the Eversolo in this case - has to switch to Roon Streaming when addressed by Roon AND the volume must be controllable by Roon. So the answer is yes.

Nice and clear review. Seems great value for money (to me), but my concern is the fact that it is a Chinese company and not sure how safe it will be knowing the government is funding most of the companies to have coverage around the world (see Huawei case). Is there somebody actually testing the data that is being transferred? Everybody jumps on it, but in the long term… hmm

I've tested the Eversolo A8 but the i2s didn't match with my Holo Audio Cyan 2 so I had to return the unit...
hopefully Eversolo will bring more I2s layout choices in the future.

I ordered a Holo Cyan 2 last week. I am interested in this A8, but could you provide more details regarding the issues with i2s? I would really appreciate it!
Last month the Eversolo only had 2 I2s configurations. When I connected the Eversolo A8 to the Cyan 2 the backin vocals changed position. The hdmi and i2s plus and minus did not match the i2s configuration with the Cyan. I really liked the sound of the cyan 2 and i really hope the eversolo will bring more options in the future but because i had a 14 day return option I decided not to wait for the update.

I bought an expensive HDMI audioquest cable 0,5 m >200 euro but the sound stayed like beautiful sound but wasn't emotionally. I bought a 75 euro pure silver chinese AV-play? I2s cable and the sound was suddenly more fluid, natural, and emotionally present. Everyone in the family agreed and music listening became more fun in the evening hours

I've invested in a gustard r26 and a gustard DDC.
Amp currently only handles RCA inputs, and not sure I want to replace it just yet, it's an Arcane avr 390.
I'm not sure if the gustard's basic streaming abilities are enough (currently undergoing acoustic treatment, so don't have things set up)

if the external DAC is clearly better, it might sound better. Whether you get the full sound quality that DAC could achieve, depends on the quality of that DAC. A € 10k DAC will sound better using a high end streamer.

Dear hans, thanks. Small question, you state that with dsp you always reduce SQ. I did not hear you say this when you reviewed the NAD streamer with dirac live. Do you think that dirac reduces sq as well or improves since you were very enthusiastic about the NAD.
Using DSP's in a stereo can give better sound quality if the problem it is supposed to solve is bigger than the aberrations the use of DSPs give. This can be the case in equipment of the Reference Level 2 and 3 equipment. Coming to Reference Level 1 equipment, it often do more harm than good. I continue to believe that Hans has extraordinary hearing, related to the time dimension. It's probably partly an innate ability and partly a learned one. Point being I trust his conclusions and his conclusion that DSP should not be used is an important fundamental, and it's logically appealing. I hadn't heard him before throw down the gauntlet on DSP. More on the topic would be interesting.

Excellent review (as always)! How does the Eversolo DMP-A8 compare, let us say to an Atoll ST300 Signature or a Rose 150B?
I have not (yet) reviewed the Atoll and I can't get a Rose for review. So I really can't say for sure. I love the Eversolo, though.
I've talked to people who have heard both and their response is.; Well...the Hi-Fi Rose sure does have a pretty screen! So yeah take that comment as you will :)
In other words, Hi-Fi Rose's parent company creates POS terminals for businesses. Eversolo came from Zidoo... who's made up from audio engineers from other companies.
I may be a bit late on this review , but trying to decide between Magna, Arce, and A8. As a streamer only. From your review of the Denafrips arce , I may prefer the Magna for the warmer sound but need your advice on the A8 if it’s more similar to the Arce or the Magna in sound signature. I’m also interested in a deeper soundstage and wondering which would be best.

As a streamer only I would pick the Magna (as you might have guessed).
I think many would like to know how it compares to the A6 and whether the doubling in price makes it worth it. You do of course have full experience of the A6 both standard and master editions.

I recently bought the a8 and connected a ASUS external CD rom drive, and that works fine.
Using it as a transport with external dac, is there an improvement over the DMP-A6 ME being used in the same manner?

A somewhat general question, but very important in my opinion: for a given sound quality, is it preferable to choose a very good preamp-streamer (example: Auralic Altair G.1.1) directly connected to the power amp (for me: a Hafler P4000), or to choose a mid-range streamer (example: cambridge MXN-10) connected to a very good preamp (mine: Electrocompaniet EC4), itself connected to the power amp. Very important for me, as my Electrocomaniet preamp is now dead. Thanks a lot.

Hello Hans, I’m a bit new to the audiophile hobby. Current system is a McIntosh MC-352, Wilson Audio Sabrina, RME ADI-2 FS, and Intel Nook as a source. I have the A8 at home, sound quality seems to be about 10% better than my current set-up but curious about your thoughts on system balance. Do you think there are better options for me to take full advantage of my speakers and amp? Looking to match my amp and speakers with their capabilities.

Second: I noticed output of my DMP-A6 on XLR/RCA plays louder and in better quality as on Analoge-RCA, using same RCA to connect to amp. Was pretty surprised. Can you or somebody here in this group confirm that?
True balanced doubles the output so it should be louder if it is true balanced, than single ended.
As @straineddig4511 stated: since it's balanced the output is double. Often louder sound is confused for better sounding. If you would precisely compensate for the difference, chances are it sounds equal. But then again there could be a change due to impedance matching.
Voltage. Single ended rca usually are 2V. Balanced XLR voltage is usually 4V. Eversolo A6 and A8 can push 6V. With the higher voltage you’re getting about 6db of gain higher with balanced XLR output.
Thanks for all your replies, I appreciate! Now , after an software update, the DMP-6’s RCA output is louder than the XLR output selection. Can this be possible or is this just imagination?
I have used identical cables from RCA and XLR. I found the presentation different but volume wasn't an issue. I found the RCA sounded a tad warmer and more organic. The XLR sort of aligned the imaging in a more refined way but to me it played a little with the overall sense of imaging. The XLR sounded a tiny bit processed whereas the RCA sounded more relaxed. This is with Audioquest Colorados on both outputs. It could however, by my preamp that was causing the difference, but I have no way of testing that as I don't have another preamp with XLR inputs.
Sorry if I repeat the same question several times but I care about your opinion.

For those of us who own an A6 ME with LPS, i think the reviews are always going to say the A8 is a better machine. We just need to live with the fact that we have ESS chips and live with their limitation ( or presentation). I have a bluesound node N130 also with LPS, into a Bryston DAC. My suggestion is if you want a different sound, buy another streamer, but don't get rid of the A6 ME as, for me after 2 weeks of having the LPS in, it's becoming very warm, musical and revealing. It's nice having 2 different sounds in the system that one can switch back and forth from. Also, I find the analogue output of the A6 ME with LPS is so different to the other setup I described that I don't bother to put it through the Bryston dac. I personally think the analogue output of the A6 ME is good enough ( for me at least ). For me, getting the right power cable and interconnects was as important as upgrading the power supply. If you've got harshness etc, I'd suggest experimenting in that department. Also get rid of power filtering devices up the line. i've found they can really screw with the analogue " feel " of the music.
Here is my dilemma: I currently like the internal dac in my Hegel H190. Is the dac in the A8 that much better? If not, I had rather buy the a6 master edition and digital out to my Hegel dac. Thoughts?
Whether the Hegel DAC sounds better, I can't say Hegel doesn't want to lend met review equipment. But even if it is better, I would still choose the A8 since also it's digital outputs are better than those on the A6.

So i have an external DAC ( Exogal Comet Plus) and would like to know, would it be worthwhile to upgrade to the A8? Also if I upgrade how do I connect it to my Exogal Comet Plus DAC? My DAC has lots of connection options
Whether the improvement is worth wile to you, I can't say. Furthermore I'm not familiar with your DAC but in general SPDIF is used to connect an external DAC.

I had an Exogal Comet plus which loved the sound of but recently sold as I could no longer live with the user interface. I think you would take a USB output from the Eversolo to the USB input on the Exogal and use the Exogal as your DAC/pre amp. I am doing something similar with the Eversolo A6 into a Benchmark DAC3 HGC which replaced my Exogal.
However, I think you would lose what seems to be the advantage of the A8 over the A6 - the upgraded DAC chips and preamp improvement. I don’t know whether it would sound better or not as the Exogal is pretty good.
As a streamer only can this unit perform at a tier level as something like Sonore optical Rendu or the signature Rendu?

If you were using a DF DAC then it sounds like the rest of your system is up to snuff. Especially if you can use the extras the A8 brings: the r2r volume and you definitely can use the i2s connection. Consider you could probably sell that A6 Master for nearly what you paid for it is popular as they are...you should think about upgrading to the A8. But then again, if you're just using it for the streaming engine, they're exactly the same. The question is: would i2s sound better than likely the USB connection you have now... Not sure about that.
I personally would get the A6 standard if I was going to connect to an external DAC and only wanted their streaming section. A8 for sure if I was going to use the analog output of it into my system.

The a8 is better analogue AND digitally. I never expected such a big difference (maybe the upgrades lps does matter a lot!). I tested with a high end chord dac. It was very noticable. I actually exchanged my a6 master for that reason. It sounded good, but compared to the a8 it sounded thinner. Not extreme but enough for me to exchange it (And i am talking digital, not analogue connected)

Yes, the A8 has a cleaner SPDIF output and thus will sound better.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel I've got to say, i've tried spdif out of my A6 ME with lps and i've not really been impressed. I prefer using the analogue RCA out, however, from my NODE N130 with LPS, the spdif into my Bryston DAC is fabulous. For me, it's like the A6 optical out to my Bryston DAC was a real mismatch. Something I've never experienced before as I've had several streaming devices in the past, that always worked well into the Bryston. I just use the A6's own DAC which for me is part of it's charm ( if one can say an A6 has any ). lol.
Hi Hans, did you have a chance to give DSD files a spin? The AKM chipset is purported to do this very well.
It does DSD as well as pcm
DSD on a6 me with LPS sounds fabulous as well. ( prob as good as an A6 can sound ).
I just got a Eversolo DMP - A8 and it sounds harsh!
I tried using the parametric EQ and everything that I could find on the unit to try and make it less harsh but it seems that most of it has zero effect. It seems as if they EQ and sound adjustment does not work. I downloaded Apple Music onto the unit.
It seems some of the Internet radio stations. The high-quality stuff is less harsh. I also watched and listened to TV through it.
How do you get this thing to not be so harsh?

I can assure you that the DMP-A8 does not sound harsh. You either have a defective one or combine it with loudspeakers that combine poorly.
Same experience here. After connecting the A8 to my amp and turning on the device I firstly played some internet radio. Even at the highest bitrates the A8 sounded harsh, thin and flat. I did'nt buy it for internet radio and hooking up ethernet for network music improved the soundquality as aspected ofcourse. But de thin, harsh and flat sound remained. I tried all the options in de A8 and the least worst sound I got when playing from usb and internal memory. The A8 plays all the notes but in a unpleasent harsh, thin and flat soundstage. I returned it and now I enjoy music again.

In other user forums I came to see that the Eversolo DMP-A6 is said to have better soundstage, transparency and detail compared to the Bluesound Node N130, even though the Node N130 is described as sounding more "musical".
The Eversolo DMP-A8 is a more advanced model than the DMP-A6, featuring an analog preamp stage in addition to the digital streaming capabilities, but does it sound analytical or musical in comparison to the Bluesound Node N130 ( the model prior to the Node X and after the 2i)

Yes, it should work no problem that way. That's how I use my sub with my SMSL dac & preamp.

Better than the one with standard power supply. The digital output signal is just cleaner. Thus jitter level at the DAC is lower.
It seems there was a bit of misunderstanding here.
We both would like to know the difference between digital out of DMP-a6 with linear power supply added, on one side, and DMP-A8 on other. We are talking about using them as streamers only, and comparing only their digital outs (usb and coax).

I tested all three in a row at a shop in Woerden. And what I found out, the A8 is beter analogue AND digital as well than the two a6’s. You would say the a6 master is digitally similar… it is not. So propably the marginal improvements, femto clocks AND upgrade power supply do the trick. The a8 was superior to them both

J’ai eu le DMP A6 Master Édition pendant un certain temps. Je l’ai revendu pour acquérir un DMP A8. Je trouve ce dernier bien supérieur à l’A6. C’est surtout une question de scène sonore, qui est beaucoup plus large et profonde. Le médium -aigu donne un sentiment de présence étonnant Je suis d’accord sur le fait qu’il faut éviter l’utilisation du DSP. Mes sources sont un disque dur externe,un disque dur interne (2 To) ,les web radios , qobuz,et un lecteur de cd Teac que j’utilise comme drive en sortant en coaxial numérique vers l’Eversolo, lui-même relié en XLR ( Van Den Hul)à un ampli accuphase E 5000. Cet ampli alimente des enceintes Jean-Marie Reynaud Bliss Jubilé. Je pense qu’il est tout à fait inutile de relier ce streamer à un dac externe. Le dac interne est très performant. Il faut faire attention à la phase de l’appareil qui est inversée par rapport aux conventions françaises. Un adaptateur shuko ( si possible non filtré) est alors nécessaire.

I have a Bryston bda-3.14 wich i tought was a bit outdated but after comparing i left my Bryston where it is and gave the Eversolo sample back to the dealer. Soundwize the Eversolo lost it, all the way.

How would you connect subs?
I prefer the use the high level inputs of a sub connected to the speaker terminals of the power amp. That way the sub will integrate better. But your could use the line outs on the DMP-A8 and set the filtering on the sub.
