How to make... Banh Mi Sandwich!

- Not many sandwiches can boast it’s origins from a French occupation in the late 1800’s while also maintaining core aspects of a traditional cuisine. While we may never recreate the authentic banh mi at home, this version is the closest I’ve come. Check out the recipe: www.donalskehan.com/recipes/ba...

If anyone here wanna enjoy the true taste of banh mi please put lemongrass in your blender instead of ginger. I think the reason our dishes have ginger when they're presented on western cooking channels is because ginger helps warm up your stomach after having the meal (it's much colder in the UK than Vietnam/Thai). But in general, the foods here don't have ginger in, we only rub ginger in&out fishes or seafood or ducks to get rid of fishy/ducky smell. No ginger in Banh Mi or Summer Rolls and sauces I swear. I'm writing this because I've seen some comments below these cooking videos complaining about the foods tasted so different compared to the ones they had in Vietnam. I appreciate those inspired recipes but some have ruined the true flavour.
Completely agree with lemongrass 'stead of ginger.
Lemon grass is a must!!...So is grilled green onion! and Cilantro! he used coriander maybe ive been mistakin thoose too
Coriander is Cilantro after its produced flowers and seeds so theyre the same
i'm really very happy you've called it "vietnamese-inspired" because a lot of chefs shy away from openly saying that it's not "authentic" to that ethnic community's cuisine. it's just important as sort of a disclaimer. thanks for being real to my culture. i'm really happy you got to experience vietnam!
I'm Vietnamese, and I approve this recipe. Itis not authentic, but its ok since its easy to make at home for everyone! Great job Donal!! Love your channel
I am vietnamese and I give this a thumbs up. Looks awesome.
Me too
agree
I'm Vietnamese and I like your Banh Mi. Your pork looks beautiful x Thank you for introducing and giving Vietnamese Banh Mi a twist x
looking good, love your take on the Banh my :) in Hanoi, we don't have Banh my with hoisin and mayo. You can try the simple Banh my with just fried egg with green onion, some pickle and hot sauce of your choice. That's a quick and simple breakfast in my house :)
This looks sublime Donal, thank you. I'm inspired to warm the baguette on the 'Porky' skillet xx
I love the way you create your own dishes and own taste
I love banh mi!!! I'm so excited for this video because I would never know how to make an authentic sandwich because of the ingredients, but I love now that I can get close!
Dude, I tried to make your banh mi version and it’s really really good! Thanks for your recipe :3
Looks amazing Donal!
This looks sooooo good!! I recently made my own Banh Mi recipe video to! Yours looks soooooo good!
Thanks for this! Bahn Mi is my fav sandwich at Rosemary & Thyme Newport RI and now that I know all the components a recipe to try at home :)
Hi, I am absolutely love your recipe, and the secret sauce is very interesting. I grew up in Vn, and banh mi is like my everyday breakfast. So happy to see vietnamese food get inspired.
Looks delish! Can't wait to try it myself
What an awesome recipe, thanks for sharing xx.
Just found your channel and I'm obsessed! Keep it up :)
I really love this and i feel jealous of the way you make "Banh mi" in your way. That's awesome!! Love the dish and the way you enjoy that Vietnamese' cutural food❤ Thumbs upppp
I like how you explained that it's inspired by bahn mi. Looks so vibrant and healthy!
that or you get ppl giving out it's not authentic :)
+Donal Skehan :) totally...everybody's a critic, eh? Love your channel ❤️
I make a lot of banh mi as my late husband was born in Saigon and my in-laws owned a restaurant there you did a great job!
Wow can’t believe your not on tv yet awesome Channel and great cook 👨🍳
Lol :)) "Bánh mì" It's awesome I can eat it everyday without losing appetite
Hmmm, you've given our Banh Mi to another level, well done!
Love you recipes, you are just amazing
thank you :)
A tip for peeling ginger is to use the spoon end of a teaspoon and drag it down the ginger that way you don't waste any
I am only young and this is the first ever tea I made myself! It was A-M-A-ZING oh my gosh seriously thank youuu!
Yummy!! you're brilliant, Donal😊
ah thank you!
+Donal Skehan Welcome back to Vietnam!!!
It is astonishing that you can get authentic Vietnamese banh mi for $2 here in Toronto (with the proper bread!). Delicious. Toronto has spectacular food of all kinds - if you ever want to know a spot to eat for a particular cuisine I probably know where to go.
oh sounds great!
It looks really tasty, Donal!
thanks!
As a vietnamese who have banh mi everyday until i get sick of it,hook me up for one of those, man you did a great job! keep it up
thanks :)
That is so good!!👌
Look so yum!
Have not visited the country, but
it's well worth a visit :)
Thank you. i loveee banh mi
When I was first married and relatively poor, and both my wife and I were slaving away at crap jobs we made sandwiches for dinner on Fridays. It started out as something to do because we were both to tired to cook and couldn't afford to go out, and it became a competition to make the most complex, decadent things we could come up with. We should start doing that again, and this recipe would be a great way to start it.
What an interesting combo! I'm trying to be more adventurous with asian food, so thanks for the inspiration!! Love your channel & really enjoying your videos filmed in Ireland ☺️👍🏼
Thank you Melanie!
I'm Viet. I'm not sure what the other Viets in the peanut gallery are thinking...but he hits some really good points--some that people miss, some that are less obvious. So the most important thing of a Viet sandwich is actually the pickle. The second thing that most people don't get is actually liver pate. It's not important to replicate the rice/flour baguette but you can actually do very well by purchasing a crappy supermarket baguette because it's airy. Otherwise, you can use just about any protein in the sandwich. The important thing is that veg supplies the contrast of warm to cold!
Bread & Bones in Dublin does amazing Banh Mi sandwiches
This sandwich looks amazing........I need to get one of those grill pans....thanks for sharing Donal, 2 thumbs up here :)
Thanks Hunnie!
:)
This looks incredible! I've got to try this, minus the spiciness haha :0)
banh mi with renovation ..awesome
This looks fantastic, mate. Thanks for sharing. Can you use beef or chicken on this sandwich as well?
The traditional meat used for Banh mi is pork. Few places use chicken but not beef
A very happy birthday to your Mr Donal!! They funny thing I was born on the same day as you...30 years ago :)
You don’t pickle the cucumbers. And usually the mayo is separate from the banh mi sauce (if they have one ... a lot places just sprinkle soy sauce or Maggi). I’ve watched some videos of the sauce being made - it’s usually a interesting mix of ground pork, pineapple, hoisin, hot sauce and a bunch of other things.
This sandwich looks soooooo good! Hey everyone, Donal's new show "Follow Donal to Europe" is now on The Cooking Channel!!! Where I live (NYC), it comes on Sunday's at 9:30am Eastern Time. Let's show our support people! I just saw the first episode and it was great.
Thats pretty early for a sunday
Thanks!
If my very little Vietnamese is correct, saying Bahn Mi SANDWICH is the same as saying Naan bread or Chai tea. Bahn means a couple of things; dough, bread are some of them and I think sandwich too.
But great recipe anyways! I think I gotta try it sometimes when I have more time^^
Banh Mi means bread. Donal is making a Bread Sandwich!
Like RIP in peace😊
+ImUrDrink i was gonna comment
Dammit
ATM machine
Like For your FYI hahaha
"I do like my pickle nice and spicy" I laughed quite hard at that
I love them soooo good
glad to hear!
Coriander/Cilantro stalks are also great on sandwiches.
Great video
It'd be more perfect if you sliced the cucumber :). I'm from Vietnam by the way! Love the recipe!
Because the baguette is of French influence, it's made with regular flour... we use regular bread in Vietnam, not rice flour baguette... (I'm French and Vietnamese)
Nice pork banh mi, the marinade looks refreshing to eat ☺👍
that is one of my fav sandwiches. thank you for a simple at home recipe now where would I find pork pate'?
oh it's available in most stores when I've looked for it! Good luck!
Inspired Donal. Did you use pork tenderloin which I am thinking you did or pork loin? Also the pork pate was a surprise but omg I could just enjoy a pate sandwich with whole grain mustard and sliced cornichons, lol. Thanks for this.
so delicious😍😍
Yamiii looks good
thank You D1
I've been to Vietnam 5 times now and I don't know why I never thought of getting a Banh Mi from the stalls. Will try next time I go.
oh yes do!
thks for visit Vietnam mate ^^
I like the fact that you say "bahn mi inspired" , "this is my style of bahn mi (or something like that)" and "it's not really a bahn mi but something everyone can make at home" . It just like a "this is not the original bahn mi" warning XD
*it's
I'm vietnamese and THIS is like a new style of bahn mi to me , with a new special sauce , in my holidays in vietnam I ate lot of bahn mi I think they are really good , too ;D
Hi I'm from Vietnam !!!!
Suddenly every Vietnamese person here turned in to en expert food critic. Just because he isn't making it the "authentic" way, doesn't mean he isn't doing it right.
When he made Hasselback potatoes, I didn't say a word, even though i thought he could've changed the recipe a little bit. Why? Because he is making it his way, the way he likes it.
The EFP (Ethnic Food Police) show up on everyone's cooking channel questioning the 'authenticity' of a given recipe. It's tiresome, but unavoidable.
haha EFP love it!
I'm Vietnamese and I'm not even tripping. He said it was a modified version because it's difficult to find all the right stuff right at the very beginning of the video. Glad you love our food Donal!
When you think about it Banh Mi is not about "authentic signature dish" but rather than a personal comfort food, so having modified the food to one's taste is really being true to the dish in the first place.
Can you count the number of version of the food that bear the same name "Banh Mi" in Vietnam? No, but everybody has their fav.
I think everyone has their favorite kind of BM. May they just want to represent the type of BM they love. Those who read comments, they may have more choice of ingredient to stuff up their Banh Mi baguette
donal this is perfect for memorial day weekend, quick & simple (donal style) with a nice cold beer and some che ba mau ;)
yes perfect combo!
You have forgotten one really important thing Banh Mi is suppose to eat warm or at least the baguette should be warm. So that it is as authentic as possible. But really nice recipe.
Actually Banh Mi means bread :). "Bánh" describes any kind of bun, and "mì" refers to "lúa mì" or "bột mì" which are wheat and wheat flour.
In Vietnamese when you say "bánh mì" people automatically refers to the sandwich because it's such a common breakfast dish, however, technically it's only bread so saying bánh mì sandwich is still not wrong since sandwich is a dish made from bread.
Thanks for telling people to put pate! Banh mi is cultural influenced by France so of course we have pate in it! I've had bank mi in Vietnam, France, and here in California :)
OMG Yummy Looks and sound delish mmmm
thank you! really worth a try!
That is yummy! !ummm I got a small request,
how to make cheese sauce?
Hello! I believe the secret sauce is usually egg yolk beaten with a little oil to make it more like mayo but not mayo. :)
my mom makes it. we just call it butter, too thick to be Mayo probably ahaha
I think it include egg yolk, oil and vinegar (or lime juice) whisk togther, and to me it way better than mayo!
my mom just uses egg yolk, oil and a bit of salt. yeah it is way better lol
it's still technically mayo though :)
i don't think my mom's recipe would be considered mayo cus it doesnt have acidity from vinegar or lemon juice but the above would be right?
Definitely approve of the amount of pate on that roll. I'm fussy as hell with my pate but that looks good. hehe. Also loving you put pickled daikon. Sydney has some of the best banh mi, and I'm related to some of the best banh mi makers. #cravings.
oh lucky you :)
delicious 😍😍😍😍
Donal what food processor are you using
yummm
^^ great stuff Donal. Back to Vietnam any time soon?
would love to!
I had a lot of banh mi when I was in Hanoi but unfortunately it was always after a night out and I was way too drunk to even know what I was eating. I remember it being super delicious though! Haha x
fun memories :)
Great video! Mayby next time try to put some soya sauce, it would taste better.
I love Bánh Mì 👍
You were in Nam? Where were you stationed?
why is it that the videos are very good and content is consistent, yet having +375k subscribers videos have not that many views?
would love to know too :)
I had one that had a pinch of pâté, on the end (probably from the knife, in error), it was so much better with it. I can't digest pork, so I never get a pork one, but if you can eat pork, definitely add the pâté!
there's also chicken pate as well if you can find it :)
+Linda Sol yes, and vegetable as well. The sandwiches are so common in my area, it would cost more to make it at home. They're $3-$3.50. Plus, I could do without the extra fat. :)
It would definitely not cost me more to make it at home haha but I don't have to cause my family owns a bakery so I can eat it all the time lol Not sure where you're from though but it can get pretty expensive in Australia depending on your area. Then again a lot of those cheap places use cheap ingredients and unfortunately, they aren't always delicious :(
+Linda Sol I'm from California. It's one of our super cheap, tasty foods. The veg is always fresh. I live near an Asian market, so I can buy pickled veg, and have for other dishes. I'm single and lazy. ;)
When you say pate, do you mean Braunschweiger? Sandwich looks yummy!
Là người VN mà mình chưa bao giờ ăn như thế này, chỉ ăn bánh mì trứng chả hoặc pate, thêm ít dưa chuột sống hoặc rau thơm
Mấy miếng thịt kia trông ngon thật
You can literally get rice floor at any Asian supermarket.
can i use chicken or beef ?
What about cucumber and onion and spam?
What I love about the bánh mì is that it has a balance of different flavours. Thank you for sharing your take on the recipe. :)
glad to hear you like it!
Waiting for the Indonesian inspired recipe!
i'll give you a thumbs up
Did Donal ever move to Los Angeles? Where is he living now?
I'm between places, back in LA in a few weeks and in London at the moment :)
There is one secret that makes banh mi so oustanding - grill your baguette thoroughly in the oven or on a charcoal grill (about 15-20 seconds will do the trick). This will enhance the crispiness of baguette ;) Ya know that irrestible sound when crunching the sandwich, ha? ;)
good tip :)
Next time you should eat banh mi with pork meatball aka xiu mai ~ ^^
Could I use chicken thighs or breast too instead of pork ?
yes you can :)
I love how he mentions it's a sandwich inspired by the banh mi and that it's not authentic whatsoever but ppl still get all worked up about it. Lolol
doesn't matter what you say :)
Lol seriously. ppl always have to find a reason to hate or something. It's as if they watch videos on mute just to find something to say. Hahaha Keep up with what your good at. I love ur videos! :)
Donal i request, please make mcdonald apple pie! :)
Any recommendations for vegetarian substitutions on pork and pâte? Thanks if anyone can help :)
I made egg salad for the pate substitute and five spice firm tofu instead of pork, it was delish!
thank you, great idea :)
Ord Grill grilled mushroom
oh my Goood, this looks so tasty!!! UUUH *HUNGRY*
I know right!
What kind of pork ?
uhh... do you cut those bread
Oh come on, he did a good job. He did not say he made bánh mì though. His sandwich is just inspired by "bánh mì", isn't it. Not to mention, there are tons of ways to prepare the "real" bánh mì. I'm Vietnamese eating bánh mì almost every single day when i was in high school and to be honest, i don't even know exactly what is the "real" bánh mì" :)) Give him a break :))
