Interesting. When I play small diameter "lead" mouthpieces with tight backbores, it sounds like I'm playing through a straw. I find them stuffy and thin sounding. The only commercial mouthpiece I sound good on is a Bach 3MV.
I started to play on a Schilke 10A4a and I have a problem where when I play for example a c above the staff i sometimes hit the c but then sometimes the only thing that comes out my horn is air and not a sound what do you think the problem is ?
the diameter could be too wide here on a 10A4a if you're getting air, I would try a 6A4a next Angel. if you bottom out on the 6A4a then you might need a middle diameter, a 7 8 or 9
Fascinating progression and it sounds like amazing progress! Congratulations 👏 🎉 My Shilcke 6A4A arrived and I have been making progress down the same lines...what you describe in pulling your embouchure out of the mp makes a ton of sense to me. This roll-in closed setup followed by opening the oral cavity (without opening the M setup) really opens up the sound. I'm still working up my strength...harder for me to sustain like this vs closed oral cavity... so I have a ways to go. But I think this is the right path. fun stuff!
Hey there he is! Great to hear from you Larry! I’m so glad the 6A4a is working for you and your description of the roll-in vs open oral cavity couldn’t be better. It’s fascinating to see how we’re both moving into this embouchure technique at the same time in our respective diameters… I honestly don’t know what to call this approach so let me know if you have ideas, but if you think about it, there is a strong correlation here between us and MF’s approach. He just did it on tiny 59 diameter pieces with high/ concave alpha angles ! Crazy.. but the perfect fit mouthpiece is different for everyone. Wow just wow!🤩
