R.I. P. MORTY. MORTGAGE Drucker is one of the most humble, humorous kindhearted person I have ever worked for. It's a pity people like you have to depart this world.
Mort was the most gracious and humble genius you could imagine. At the end of a large annual cartoonists gathering, he said to me, "Joe, I'm sorry I didn't get to talk to you." He'd been busy all day, being sought out by young artists for critiques and sharing his wisdom. I said, "Mort, you're like the Godfather. Everyone wants to talk to you. You don't owe me any apologies." Here was the great Mort Drucker apologizing to a nobody like me! He was a beautiful soul.
Fantastic! Love Mort since I was a kid in Brazil. When I migrated to the USA in 85, and later broke in the comic book business, I got a hold of Mort's phone number and called him. His wife, Barbara answered the phone. She taught me so much about the business in that phone chat many years ago! The Druckers!!! What a Wonderful Team!
It’s cool seeing you here-I grew up reading the Action Bible before bed as a kid, and now I’m a teenager interested in drawing and making caricatures as a hobby
Thanks for this. Mort Drucker is a hero. As a kid I lived for Mad Magazine, and despite all the other talent, his movie take-offs have never been equaled. When I grew up and started doing commercial illustration, I looked to him and still do.
It just jaw-dropping to see the shear AMOUNT of work he did in his career - his talent is immeasurable! I loved studying all the detail in his drawings as a kid, he was by far my favorite MAD artist.
A towering master of caricature and illustration, and one of the great comedians of the 20th century. Too many classic images from Mad TV and movie parodies come to mind. So few even come close to him (yes, Jack Davis is one, Duncan Macpherson is another). How much delight this man brought to my life. Great interview. RIP MD.
I have a couple of "Gods" if you will, from the creative world who've inspired and wow'd me throughout my entire life. From as a kid, all the way to today at 62 years old. Mort Drucker, an absolute Master was one of them. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! Interviews with him are very rare.
Wow!!! Did I learn a LOT!!! So insightful and honest. I'm an animator maybe more than a cartoonist, but the same principles apply! I'm so grateful for this fascinating and mind changing interview with one of my heroes! Thanks so much, John. I'm inspired to do better work!!
Great to hear from a master in his own words. The value of what he says - observe, learn from the greats, accept criticism...- all should be adhered to by young and old alike. Like Mort, I was mentored by a great artist from the NCS - Burne Hogarth - and followed his advice to always draw. Thanks for taking the time to get Mort's words on record!
i ve must encounter somne of mr Reiners work but not quite sure where he was showing his work tho...now tht ive seen this interview imn most interessted in reiners work loll...mort druker was the pillar of cartoons know how...i remember his work mostly because i bought so many mad magazines just to see how far he could go by drawing caracters and holliwood stars...im not at the top of my work but i ll never his...rip mister, hope a will do a bit more before i, my turn, reach the sky
15.05 - this interview was conducted entirely within 4.02 pm; or, possibly, 4.02am. I hoped it's the latter, although the light in the window told me different. Time stands still when you're talking with the greats. Mort and Jobn Severin were my idea of High Art in the 80's.
I wanted all the parodies to be illustrated by Mort. Jack was a star but I just loved Mort’s nuances, which were mixed in with the calculated garishness of caricature. He ALWAYS aimed for gentle ribbing vs cruelty
"Guys, make sure your cell phones are turned off..." *R-R-R-RING!* "Hello. Hi, honey, don't call here again, ya hear!!!" (applause) Mort, yer beautiful, mister. Marry me.
Mort has the coolest style. Not to take away any of the other great MAD artists contributions, I just loved the body language. Especially when he drew women’s breast bouncing. Hysterical.
Bravo! Congratulations, Einstein. You've been awarded 500 Helen Keller Points for your swell, eagle-eye observation. Naturally, ARTHUR is loitering in the background. Cheers, 177deer!
Few things stand-up after 64 years of living. Jimi, Twilight Zone, and Mort Drucker do. People who don't know what it takes to become an artist probably watch this video and think Mort Drucker is just a quiet little man but, for those who have struggled to learn how to draw understand that he was as tough and driven in his world as any athlete is in theirs.
R.I.P Master Mort Drucker... You and Jack Davis were my true inspiration
His ability to capture a likeness with just a few lines, is amazing.
Rest in peace great one thank you for your advice here i wish i could have got to know you in life but this is the closest thing you are a great master and will never be forgotten thank you for just being you and helping us learn to be us as individuals the words you spoke here is valuable and priceless i hope all artists take your great advice here thanks this worth its weight in gold so cool thank you for sharing this ..god bless you all and rest in peace Master Drucker 🙏 ✨️
Rest in peace. Mort Drucker and Jack Davis taught me how to draw. I still have all those MAD Magazines from the 60s and 70s.

Wonderful interview. May Mort Drucker continue to rest in peace.
We have lost a legend April9 2020 Mort Drucker may he rest in peace Thankyou for sharing your valuable talent with all of us around the world

Much to learn here. Don't try to take it all in at once. This is a clinic.
As a fellow artist, "Im speaking from the inner part of me that says, you can draw, you need to draw. M
The greatest caricature illustrator, of all time. R.I.P Morty.
It just jaw-dropping to see the shear AMOUNT of work he did in his career - his talent is immeasurable! I loved studying all the detail in his drawings as a kid, he was by far my favorite MAD artist.
Mort is THE man. Easy to spot his stuff. Great humor is what he chose emphasize. He understood.
Nao tinha dinheiro, mas passava nas bancas so para ver as novas capas da revista mad... era sempre genial!

Mind blowing
An illustrator's illustrator. Great interview with a humble giant.
A conversation with the Master!!
I stopped work immediately when seeing this pop up on UA-cam. Thank you so much John Reiner, for producing this gem of a gem!
I still remember the great statement: The Usual Gang of Idiots. I still have my two hard bound Mad Magazine books from the early 1960s.
Always admired Mr. Drucker's works. Your interviews allow one to admire his wisdom.
For this, we thank you.
Thanks for such a moving and informative interview by an artist who inspired me and thousands of other artists.
Students and professionals alike can learn LOTS from this beautiful man!!!!!!

i've kept all of my old mad magazines and i love morts illustrations. thank you mort!!
WOW! Two great artists, and remarkably, two great human beings. What a pleasure to witness this. Thank you!

I'm so delighted to watch this. Great interview of a great artist, and one of the masters that I continue to marvel at to this day.
Beautiful interview with a great artist and obviously a great human being.
Rest In Peace, thanks for the influences. 💔
That was a rare, insightful and inspiring interview and talk. Just wonderful dedicated individuals to their craft.

Great interview. I loved this.
2021, Mad no longer exist, they stopped last year. I miss them.
Legend!

Oh to be loved like he loved his wife.....😣
Interesting that Mort didn't talk much about Mad and Bill Gaines.
When Steven Spielberg and George Lucas say you are the best, you must be doing something right.
Who is the lady outside the window? Do you see her? I do.
Bravo! Congratulations, Einstein. You've been awarded 500 Helen Keller Points for your swell, eagle-eye observation.

Better than Crumb just my opinion

Artists like Lichtenstein made millions out of cartoonists work, something wrong there, usually one image when these guys draw hundreds of thousands 🤔
