- We’ll cover how to program a new key for your Subaru and what you’ll need to do it. This should work with the Crosstrek, Outback, Forester, Legacy, Ascent, Impreza, WRX, and STI that have the smart key style that is shown in the video.

NOTE: The I have learned that as of the time of publishing the Xtool D7 can only program Subarus up to 2022. If you have a car made after 2022, I suggest emailing Xtool customer support to see if they support it.

Thank you for the video! Your directions worked perfectly with the Xtool D7. I decided to buy an Autel MK 808S because Amazon said it would program keys and because all the cool kids with automotive channels on UA-cam seem to have Autel's. I could not make it work! I returned the Autel, got the Xtool D7, and it was easy! Lesson learned: follow the directions!
Just bought a 2019 Wrx Sti and it came with one key fob. I'm about to order a new aftermarket one and was wondering how to program it myself. Sucks you have to buy the xtool d7, but I might actually keep the box because it seems super handy. Very nice video and straight to the point. Awesome Job, Thanks!

I have two old smart key fobs. They belonged to my 2021 Subaru Forester, that was totaled in accident. How do I know if the key is unlocked?

What are the steps to unlock a key from another car? (I want to swap a spare key from my old car to my new car)
OMG, thank you! I just purchased a used 2016 Outback, replaced my 2012, and it only came with one key fob. Not good for me at all.

got the xtool d7, got the correct blank/unprogrammed key, got a working key. The S/W interface is different with programming under 'imoblizer' and that kinda scares me because the one locksmith I talked with said you could easily 'brick' your computer. I emailed xtool support and they replied that the d7 could not program a 2023 subaru crosstrek so not I'm lost and not sure what to try.
any suggestions? thanks!
Sadly, if Xtool are saying it won’t work, I would not mess with it. 😞

I believe the D7 only works up to 2022, but I’d email Xtool to confirm.

Hmmm. That is very odd. I’d try unplugging the device, cleaning the OBD port/connector with compressed air, and then trying again. If that fails, reach out to Xtool (xtoolofficial@hotmail.com) with all the details and hopefully they can help you.

hi, is there another model of xtool ( less expensive) that program a 2015 Forester car key.? Congrats for the video
This is the cheapest model that can program Subaru keys I could find.
Is there anyway to unlock a key that has been programmed to a previous car
There is a way, but for that you need another device that is capable of resetting the actual key itself (not just the car). Those devices tend to be a lot more expensive.
Can we use SSM4 to program it?
Is it possible to convert an old subie key to this particular kind? Mine is an 08 wrx hatch and it comes with a key with 3 buttons on it.. Hoping I can change to this style

Sadly, you can’t! Older cars used to be able to be programmed without any tools, but this has changed with modern cars. The reason is theft. The easier it is to program new keys, the easier it is for thieves to use the same techniques.
From D7 Xtool: 2022 Subaru Outback is not supported.

Looks like this isn’t compatible with a 22 Outback. Bummer
I’d reach out to Xtool just to confirm. From my experience their website is not always the most up-to-date, and their support team may be able to give you an idea of when ‘22s will be supported.
What if you only have a spare key because you lost your first key that was the original
I’m not 100% sure, but I’m pretty confident that if your spare key works you should be fine to use this method.
I couldn't connect Xtool D7 to my Subaru zoutback 2020.... I am getting message connection fsiled ,(😢
