There was a silly simple myth that always bothered me: earwax candles. When MythBusters finds a myth to be untrue, the next step is usually to figure out how to MAKE it work. With earwax candle they scraped the wax, smushed it together, it didn't burn, and they declared you can't make an earwax candle. Why didn't you guys render the fat? Boil the wax in some water to separate the impurities and get pure earwax, then try to make a candle out of that.

I've never stopped to ask what that is telling me about myself, however. Thanks for that, Adam.
This is a true story. In the early 1970's, after I graduated high school, I, like any teenage boy, wanted to attract women. I worked a job and ended up buying my own clothes. But there was a place in nearby Waukegan that sold clothes that were a bit over_the_top and I started buying and wearing them. A normal look for me was me in a long red coat with a very long scarf and a hat. I just made that look up myself. I later dressed up like that and went to a coffee house and people started asking me if I was a Doctor Who fan. I had NEVER heard of Doctor Who but I looked into it and found I that I was accidently dressing like Tom Baker!

I find Adams interest in chasing 0's really amusing, as a few years I was really curious how machinists are able to make projects so precisely, and more importantly, how are you able to make standard references without always needing to have a more precise standard or tool. I was able to find some of the answer (ala surface plates) but admittedly there were still a lot of questions left unanswered, so Adam if you're looking for any video ideas, may I suggest something along the lines of Metrology from Scratch
It's kind of the inverse of that Borges story where the king's demand for greater map accuracy eventually forces his cartographers to make a map literally the size of the kingdom it represents.
That Ricky Jay episode, they had a camera guy go all they way to the other end of the warehouse, and someone (Adam?) asked Ricky if he could really throw it that far. Ricky just gave him a look, turned, fired, and hit the camera. Fantastic.
Its always nice when the creative aspect of science is able to get in the moment and have some fun. My kids and I loved you dressing up for testing myths, Adam 👍.
Every one of these Q+A videos from you makes me yearn for a proper full revival of Mysthbusters. PLEASE do a crowdfunding campaign or something to make it happen!
Adam could talk about how he spreads butter on his toast in the morning and i feel i could be inspired, entertained, and enlightened all at the same time. It's a straight up blessing that someone as thoughtful, interesting, and talented is on UA-cam like this for us all to experience.
Someone ask Adam what he thinks about Streamlined Mythbusters or "Smyths" where people edit out all the repetition and the going back and forth between myths so each myth and experiment is presented in a linear fashion. Much more comprehensible for people who get confused by shows that switch around between plot threads and/or have attention deficit issues.
I was so taken with your Neo costume that my mom got me those same boots for Christmas that year. Rough pick for a middle school non-uniform day outfit but it was fun as heck to dress like Adam dressed as Neo
MythBusters was one of my favorite shows. You and Jamie did an awesome job. One question for you, though. Is that shirt from the film Outland with Sean Connery & Peter Boyle or Alien with Tom Skeritt & Sigourney Weaver? The uniforms in both were very similar & it's been so long since I've watched Outland, it reminded me of those shirts. Thanks.
when adam talks i get the idea he would encourage me to work on things and would be really enthusiastic and kind about whatever i'm working on. it's nice! can i keep him on my desk? lol
I've been noticing that myths that have been tested on mythbusters are coming back from the younger generation. Like I just saw one about the brace position in aircrafts is supposed to kill the passengers. I wish there was a way to get mythbusters back into the zeitgeist.
Look for Streamlined Mythbusters or "smyths". Take a Mythbusters episode and cut out all the repetition and going back and forth between myths so that it's re-arranged to present the essentials of each myth and experiment in a linear fashion. Some "smyth" editors do get a bit over zealous in their trimming, like the one about the office worker who smashed through an "unbreakable" window and fell to his death while demonstrating how it was unbreakable. The person who edited that one cut out all but the final test that worked and the part about the person who went through the window by ramming it with a shoulder, applying the force to too small of an area.
I always wondered if there were any myths that in hindsight you thought....not sure we really covered all we could. One myth i still think to this day was the going down with a sinking ship....part of me just thinks that with a ship so much bigger then the ship tested with results would have been different
I have a vague memory of jumping into a dumpster when I was a little kid. I remember being covered in egg and finding a hand gun and I couldn't understand why I got in trouble. Lesson eventually learned: don't jump into random dumpsters. For a short time I thought it was the thing to do and couldn't understand why people didn't. I wasn't the smartest kid.
Maker's Muse recently tested numerous wacky wheel designs for traction on sandy inclines, but they were 3D printed on an RC car, probably not what Adam was talking about.
What if you were to build a tie with the steel belting in a square pattern. So, when you need to drive on sandy surfaces you just reduce the pressure and it takes a squarish shape? Fill it back up and it's round again.
10:05 was it makers muse who did the wheels Adam is talking about? I know Angus was working on a smaller scale with a variety of shapes, but I remember watching a video where the wheels were tested against piles of sand
I know I’m not a member, it’s not even a question but you might want to hear about it. modern cars with flyby wire controls (steer, brake, and gas) can theoretically be controlled via OBD2 connection and some sort of program to decode and code it all into data that would respond very well to force feedback steering wheels designed for video games. Couple that with a camera and you have a 1-1 scale RC car that you can crash without ruining makeshift steering rigs. Grant would have been all over it had he been around today, and RC cars were needed
I too would love to see a collaboration between yourself and Ricky Jay. I became aware of Mr. Jay in a very weird way - one of only two freakish things that have ever happened in my life. One night when I was a kid I saw Ricky on a TV show, like The Tonight Show or whatever, and he demonstrated his incredible card-throwing skills. If I recall correctly, he threw an entire deck high into the air above the studio audience's heads, and had the entire deck in the air by the time the first one fell to the ground. I thought that was amazing and I wished I could learn how to do that. Here's the freakish part - not long after, I am walking around my apartment complex where we lived, and I see a book laying there. I go to it and pick it up, and the title is "Cards as Weapons", by Ricky Jay himself. Reading this book taught me how to throw cards, although I can barely make it sting against bare skin. I cannot penetrate a watermelon or cut (or even HIT) string cheese or any of his other stunts. But I can get them to go pretty far, so I still love to buy an occasional deck of cards and make sure that one of my neighbors a couple houses away wakes up in the morning and wonders "Who the hell spilled a deck of cards in my back yard last night???"
Less than 2 mins into the video, and I'm already so happy to hear you mention Ricky Jay (RIP) and Michael Weber (I'm assuming, since it came in context w/ Ricky Jay that you mean the mentalist/magician, right?).
Hey, I just want to say that if you ever wanted to make a show called “Myth Crackers” that is total legally distinct from any pre-existing project, where you test urban legends and stories, I would watch every episode. If you invited great minds like Kyle Hill to be involved then it would be appointment viewing.
I still think about the myth busting of drunk people peeing on electric fence / railroad tracks. For me, the biggest omission was that when people urinate, it doesn't just fall out do to gravity. There are also muscles that help aid in urination. The main stand point in the bust was that urine is fast moving balls of liquid...
I love the shout outs to different creators! :) By the way: The last name of Stefan Gotteswinter pretty much would translate to "God's winter" and it is pretty close to how you pronounce it in german, especially "winter" is identical. The e in Gottes is similarly pronounced to the first e of "electrical". So you could probably just say "Stefan God's winter" and someone speaking german would understand (only a syllable and a hard t missing). Anyway, it doesn't really matter. :P Love your enthusiasm Adam!
I remember watching Mythbusters and just Jamie looking at Adam and going you have a costume dont you... or something to that effect I busted up laughing all the time
Is there such a thing in physics as joy amplification by stimulated emission of enthusiasm? If so, it could be experimentally tested by putting Adam together with Destin from SmarterEveryDay.
Which myth do you wish MythBusters had taken further?

The channel that looked at the square wheels tried them out in mud and offroad applications. I'll go ahead and put the language warning here, but this is the link to WhistlinDiesel's video:

Enjoy the “1-on-1” time just as much as the one day builds…I totally enjoy your daily content.
Phenomenal advice, document everything! I really appreciate that you acknowledge the different spheres of creativity as makers.
Fantastic.
This Old Tony - Stefan Gotteswinter you both got the Adam Savage tick of approval !
Well done Sirs !
It's not myth busters without you guys
Enough said 🤓😁
I just looked up that jump scene in the Neo cosplay and bruh he looked real kickass actually!
Drinking Bundaberg ginger beer!
Greetings from down under.
Project Farm pretty much IS a Mythbuster - that would be a fantastic team-up.
Its always nice when the creative aspect of science is able to get in the moment and have some fun. My kids and I loved you dressing up for testing myths, Adam 👍.
I appreciate both including sewers in the maker category, and the respect you had for sewing machines on Mythbusters
I love that you have this channel.
I love that This Old Tony is called out. The man is utterly brilliant, and is not recognized nearly enough.
The thought of this old tony on mythbusters is an amazing one
Adam naming more channel's I should follow. Joe n Old Tony got another sub because of Adam.
thank you for sharing these experiences with us there's a much deeper meaning behind what you are saying :)
The youtube channel that did the square wheels at 50mph was "whistlindiesel".
Omg, This Old Tony on Mythbusters!?!
That would be pretty mild. Put in AvE instead! Here's a lathe.
I was so taken with your Neo costume that my mom got me those same boots for Christmas that year. Rough pick for a middle school non-uniform day outfit but it was fun as heck to dress like Adam dressed as Neo
The MythBusters should have used the rocket sled on the knock-your-socks-off myth.
Thanks.
when adam talks i get the idea he would encourage me to work on things and would be really enthusiastic and kind about whatever i'm working on. it's nice! can i keep him on my desk? lol
Nilered, Cody'sLab, and electroboom would all be awesome mythbuster guests.
Props to you for getting that filter.
The rocket car was always a good one...ready wanted that one to work more then it did.
The joy of listening to this while also realizing that you're drinking Bundy Ginger. Great stuff
Thanks Adam!
Adam and Colin Furze would be a terrifying collab
I'm glad you acknowledge that "space" suits are on the same level as Neo's costume or other fictional characters.
Oh man can't wait for the Adam/Kyle video
Coming out on Thursday!
What a cool human. Thanks for sharing your experiences and stories with us!!
I always wondered if there were any myths that in hindsight you thought....not sure we really covered all we could. One myth i still think to this day was the going down with a sinking ship....part of me just thinks that with a ship so much bigger then the ship tested with results would have been different
It would be interesting to see you work with William Osman. Dude is having a rough time atm, but his creativity is off the charts.
The episode with Ricky Jay was fucking fantastic. May he rest in pieces. Legend.
So many views so few comments. Come on people show some support.
It would be epic to see you do a collab with Cody's Lab.
I miss Mythbusters 😢!
Stefan Gotteswinter is amazing. Dude is so precise it's wild.
Shark Wheels has built a whole company out of square wheels - and they work phenomenally well.
Love to see collaboration with Tom Scott and/or Mark Rober
Less than 2 mins into the video, and I'm already so happy to hear you mention Ricky Jay (RIP) and Michael Weber (I'm assuming, since it came in context w/ Ricky Jay that you mean the mentalist/magician, right?).
I received your book for Christmas this year and just read that story last night.
Hey, I just want to say that if you ever wanted to make a show called “Myth Crackers” that is total legally distinct from any pre-existing project, where you test urban legends and stories, I would watch every episode.
If you invited great minds like Kyle Hill to be involved then it would be appointment viewing.
Absolutely need an ididathing x adam savage collab
Does anybody know or have a link to that youtube channel that tested square wheels, as adam mentioned at the end of this video?
I just found it on UA-cam. My first thought was Potholes!
ua-cam.com/video/QF7odK55gkI/v-deo.html
Now that he's wearing it more casually, the alien shirt really works for him
Bundaberg Ginger Beer? Hit me up if you need a driver with a beater van if you ever come to Melbourne.
Glad to hear Adam is a kyle Hill fan like me
The playing cards myth was so fun to watch.
Xyla Foxlin's channel too I hope....
She's great!
Anyone have a link for the UA-camr version of square wheels smooth ride?
ua-cam.com/video/DMXkNq93hBk/v-deo.html from WhistlinDiesel - language warning
Another fan posted this: ua-cam.com/video/DMXkNq93hBk/v-deo.html
Can we get links to all the channels you mentioned?
I remember watching Mythbusters and just Jamie looking at Adam and going you have a costume dont you... or something to that effect I busted up laughing all the time
Is there such a thing in physics as joy amplification by stimulated emission of enthusiasm? If so, it could be experimentally tested by putting Adam together with Destin from SmarterEveryDay.
"Done" is a concept we rarely understand
I'd love to see an Adam collab with Mark Rober!
We have to consider they filmed this show in California. One of the most regulated states in the union. That itself is an achievement.
The difference with being seen by people that know you versus a stranger is the context.
I'm surprised Jamie doesn't drive with square wheels for day-to-day travel given his passion about the subject.
