OMG, that woman can write, play and sing. All that with nothing but her guitar, puts today’s “Singers” to shame, what an absolute joy to see and hear this.
It troubles me greatly that "pop" music is full of autotune...and that most listeners don't seem to care...there is still great music and artistry out there of course but mainstream music has not had anything "great" to my ears since the 90's or early 2000's....ever decreasing circle of creativity it seems to me...
This was the TV show that caused Joni to miss playing at Woodstock. They had trouble getting people in and out of the event so she stayed behind in NYC after playing a gig with Crosby (rest in peace) Stills Nash and Young in order to do this Cavett show. She seemed bummed, in the Joni way, that she missed the concert, but we all got the wonderful song Woodstock from her loss. All that said, Joni is a all around Canadian treasure of the rarest form.
My earliest childhood memories Mom playing Joni on the stereo ( vinyl). Windows open breezes, hanging ferns moms paintings, poetry. A happy simple time so full of joy. ✌️❤️

Gossamer-Winged butterfly here-because the wings, like the fabric, generally appear delicate and shimmery, covered both by pigmented scales and by light-refracting scales.
She is a treasure!! And has made a wonderful recovery from her stroke. Thank you Brandi and friends for supporting her recovery!! The Newport Festival with Joni was fabulous! ❤️🙏🏽
Such a Precious and Enjoyable flow of music from Joni . Flying freely like a bird . Good Music is not a cheap , shallow thing . It takes a lot of practice and a lot of care for the music and the Listeners .
Saw Joni in the festival hall London 1971 I was 16 she was fantastic and have love her music ever since. So lucky to have been around and grown up with her music….
Few youngsters today can even begin to comprehend Joni Mitchell’s Unbelievable Gift of Artistic Expression in so Many Mediums. Everybody, Give her the LOVE THAT SHE DESERVES! 🙏❤️🤗
I trained as an actor, and one day my teacher asked me who had influenced me as an actor. I said, "There are only one or two actors. But, really, Joni Mitchell more than anyone." He looked very wise and said, "So, you want to act the way Joni sings. Right?" I said, 'Right!" "Tall order, "he said.
Four minutes of pure enjoyment. Joni has the perfect voice. Nothing how the audience listened and not get up and stand in front of the performance , or press buttons on some device and ignore what's going on. After all this was right after Woodstock festival August 1969, doubt anyone wants to think about next few days, we'll talk in present tenses.
she was a massive Star in her time. She helped define the 60's counter culture too. And a powerful feminist as well. But all, in her own way and not defined by other peoples views on what that should be.
Aired 8/19/1969 - Joni missed out on performing at Woodstock so she could appear on the Dick Cavett Show. Joni wrote the song Woodstock that Cosby Stills and Nash return into an anthem. Groovy
The looks on the audience's faces. How incredible would it have been to be that close to the 26-year-old Joni Mitchell, in her absolute musical prime, singing that famous song of hers??? I wonder what Grace Slick thought.
Wow. Unique version. Oh! Look at the date! That's the week I got married. Joni is a great artist. Of course, she's a rose with many thorns, but we must accept these complex personalities bearing wonderful gifts. So smile, be gracious, and accept the beautiful presents that she has given us. I hope that she is comfortable and happy.
This is the most magic song....that scat singing at the end, especially when she does it in four parts on the album.....it just makes your soul leap out of your body...like a spring morning.....
I'd also be pretty uncomfortable sitting on poufs madr of elefant feet. Not everything was better back then, but the music sure was! What a musical legacy Joni has brought to us all from her very first beginnings. I for one heard her as a baby and never stopped listening. ❤️
It's bad enough she missed Woodstock; when she appeared on the show, two acts who played Woodstock appeared with her and one, Jefferson Airplane, performed three songs. She could have done both, easily. That said, she has spoken derisively of the Woodstock generation over the years. Maybe it was better she didn't see it firsthand; she might have written a very different song if she had.
Had Joni made it to the festival, she WOULDN'T have written "Woodstock," as she DID, sadly reflecting on how she was missing out on the greatest/biggest event of her generation, while sitting back in her hotel room after this show, apparently. BECAUSE of that saddened, yet inspired by the phenomena, feeling, she wrote that exquisite song, she has basically said so herself. So, her NOT getting to attend Woodstock, was, ultimately, a very fortunate, &, beneficial, disappointment...SHE, certainly, MADE it that way...
Meh. She didn't miss all the rain and mud and horrible traffic and drugged out hippies. And the incredible hassle it would have been, in general. She probably had a nice hotel room and got a lovely New York City brunch.
A part from Liberace, I can't think of a single person! In fact ..if Joni let him wear a mink lined, diamond encrusted Day. I'm sure Liberace would have happily joined her too!
I met Paul, Grace and Jack Cassady at Woodstock just a few days before this show, and later on Paul and I were neighbors in SF and had coffee together daily for years at the Caffe Trieste, which he loved. Jerry Garcia came there too a few times.
why aren't there more joni mitchell types in music of any era? they don't sell enough records. screw sales or popularity, i want good music, that's all.
I miss her beautiful soprano voice. Both Joni and Grace are wonderful artists. I'm sad though, that Grace preferred that the drums be made from tortured animals rather than cruelty-free materials. Good for Dick Cavett for not supporting animal cruelty
Did Dick Cavett make a Jab at grace slick when he said a 'TRUE musician' describing joni mitchell. It's hard to say if he disliked grace slick or somethin..
@@bradbackman3 Grace seems like a character, and maybe it's just seen awkward from the viewer but I really don't know the dynamic between these people. I just got the feeling that he didn't like Grace or something, but I could be very wrong :/
I get the impression that most of the non-Joni guests are on at least a couple of drugs seeing as they’d just come from Woodstock which makes the dynamic a little bit odd for Cavett. I doubt that he meant any offence.
OMG, that woman can write, play and sing. All that with nothing but her guitar, puts today’s “Singers” to shame, what an absolute joy to see and hear this.
She can paint too, and she's good as well; she has drawn and illustrated a lot of her records' covers!

She also produced all her own albums. Truly one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Idiotic to compare
Bravo Joni! S truly great performance.
Just as astonishing 51 years later.

67 year old fan here- Chelsea Morning was the 1st Joni song I ever heard- she still gives me chills.
I'm a 69 year old fan and I named my only daughter Chelsea. She's 42 now and recently had my only grandson.
Seeing Grace Slick clap for Joni Mitchell warms my heart. Each of them is great in their own ways. I adore each.
Me too.
My earliest childhood memories
Mom playing Joni on the stereo ( vinyl). Windows open breezes, hanging ferns moms paintings, poetry. A happy simple time so full of joy. ✌️❤️
treasure that memory!
@Cody M. Lovely memories. I often wish I had a time machine.
young Joni is so incredible when David Crosby heard this song for the first time he remarked how could anyone be that good
Indeed. Crosby knew what he was talking about. He discovered Joni Mitchell singing in an obscure club in Florida and got her first recording contract.
When she played the song "Woodstock" on the piano for CSN, Stephen Stills ask her if they could have it! No wonder!
She is so beautiful, in face, words, music and spirit. I haven't stopped listening for 45 years.
joni is one of the most talented individuals who ever recorded music. best voice in history by a million miles!
"Sun poured in like butterscotch, and stuck to all my senses,

Will Shaw No one! The only person that I can think of that could come close is Jason Mraz. And still, no one.
Prince. Starfish and Coffee, maple syrup and jam, butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

What a magical voice , this girl had ...There will be no other like Joni...how can there be ...she was one of a kind .

What an amazing gift from heaven. And to be blessed to exist in her lifetime and to have seen her 74 is an honor.
An angel of music sent to make you happy.

She is, it's crazy how talented she is.
The most beautiful voice! ♥
She's just the best...crazy talented.
Joni...we got your back❤
One word comes to mind to me ..... Mesmerising.
Met a young lady recently named Chelsea. Told her to listen to this. This is 2024, and it's still priceless.
Chelsea Clinton's name actually came from this song, albeit the Judy Collins cover.
She always makes me cry and in the best of ways. It is our place to continue this tradition. Sing in the damn shower!
Thank you for uploading this. It looked like an interesting show with Jefferson Airplane too. This is my favourite Joni Mitchell song.
You're welcome... Indeed, what an interesting show....
+Terra Sanctum It was a great show. I managed to see the whole thing - wonderful!
Wow, how sweet...

I knew she was a winner the first time I ever saw her
Such a happy song. Yum
Joni looks and sounds amazing here.
Just beautiful and from her soul
Just brilliant!
Now the audience would be hooting and hollering through out this performance.
No, they'd be playing with their phones or trying to record it.
I miss Dick Cavitt. The soul of urbanity, warmth, and wit.

This is the show she missed Woodstock for!!
Too bad, Joni couldn't get Up State due to the traffic jam, she should have hitched a ride on the Jefferson Airplane (err helicopter).

I love you, Joni ❤
Great live too
She was a phenomenon. I fell in love like so many others. Listen to the audience eruption....sez it all......
Beacause of this show Geffen didnt allow Joni Mitchell to go to Woodstock, but she seems kinda happy about this afterwards.

Perfect.

where does this stuff come from, the airplane sittin in the audience listenin to Joni, introduced by cavett... i need a joint!
JONI MITCHELL WAS LIKE UNTO A SPIRITUAL MOTHER FIGURE FOR ALL THE FLOWER CHILDREN WERE LOOKING FOR JUST AT THE RIGHT TIME IN AMERICA.😊😊😊😊😊
But Joni Mitchell also went through a lot of musical changes, and she was a lot more than just a flower child.
Jorma got the idea for 3 weeks in Chelsea right here
Is this the TV performance that kept her from playing at Woodstock?
A beautiful woman 😍
She was about to play another song at the piano it seems... Why the hell did this video stopped there?
Separate video. It's there, go find it.
I used to say she was the greatest female singer songwriter of her generation. Now I don’t put a gender qualification on the statement.
