7:47 this is also when the show stops being filmed like a 50s sitcom, which heightens the unease in the viewer! Up to that point all the camera positioning and movement had been constrained to what would have been possible for a 50s sitcom actually filmed in front of a live studio audience. This means a lot of wide shots and the cameras mostly filming the same handful of angles of the "house" since it would've been an open set. But when Vision's boss starts choking suddenly we get all of these closeups and shots that would have the camera placed on top of the table. The camera work takes us out of the 50s vibe just as eerily and effectively as the script and acting do in that moment and it's so cool!
Albeit most directors would never make such drastic switches because of the psychologicalaspect it supposed to bring- like going from wide shots to close ups can make the viewer more anxious as it gets closer and bring unease that its so different. This dissonance was precisely what they wanted to evoke I love it. I love the themes they used to make a fresh story. Marvel is great at this
Also the special effects. In the early sitcom episodes, the effects are all done using techniques they had access to in the time period. Strings and jump cuts galore. But during those unsettling reality breaks, suddenly modern effects are used, like the effect of Vision turning his hand intangible to save Mr. Hart from choking. I LOVE how this show is so attentive to detail that most of not all apparent slip-ups in authenticity are actually very intentional to give the viewer that feeling of “something’s not quite right here” even if they don’t have enough knowledge of show-making to properly identify it.

Man, this was good. I didn't pick up of the abuse and addiction themes. For me when I watched the show, I was thinking about how well it portrayed losing everyone that made you feel safe and just that desperate unmoored feeling that comes with grief. I completely felt for Wanda doing anything to escape feeling that. Your analysis was so on point. Can't wait for more videos!
The abuse part, I understood, adjusting free will to her wish is a special scary kind of scary, especially when Monica spoke about the experience of the mind control. But the addict theme is a special galaxy brain take I was so unprepared for but loves.
This show hits so fuckin hard when you've got trauma and you've done the thing where you just . . . refuse to acknowledge it, and damn the consequences. This reminded me all over again why I kept arguing to have this show uploaded at once. I forgot about the children. I didn't realize that's why she did the Halloween episode and the chills would have been harder when the woman asked for her child to be let out of her room. I need to rewatch this in one day.
At the same time, there can be a lot of value in suspense too. You can always binge a show afterwards, but having it more drawn out delays the instant gratification and keeps it in your mind a lot longer, meaning you can interact with the show a lot more if you are chasing it. It is hard to not binge if it is available, even if you like the experience of not binging, ya’ know?
@@8114梦见 oh absolutely I agree, I just think there are some paced better to have a spread out release and others to be binged. Like the Mandalorian worked so much better on a weekly release. Ideally to me this would have been releasing a new episode every day, so there's still time to process it before the next and anticipation, but also not enough time to forget everything. I'm actually shocked no platforms have tried a daily release schedule before. I also am of the philosophy that if a show matters to me, I'll be rewatching it for years or possibly my lifetime, so I don't usually feel guilt about binging when I choose to. That's just always how I interact with shows, like watching Firefly twice a year every end of the semester during college. Although you do make a good point, it's possible some shows have had less of an impact because I devoured it too quickly.
i honestly loved having it serialized, i watched it that way with my brother and then later all in one night with my friend and i enjoyed being able to stew in the theories and overanalyze every frame for a week before getting more. it really allowed me to digest and understand the very dense narrative
The serialisation of it reminded me of when that was the only way to actually consume show, and I do find that I like how the conversation gets drawn out over two months instead of it being a hot shot you have to slam in the first weekend to avoid spoilers before forgetting about it when the next sensation drops.
I really appreciate you pointing out that during their fight Vision is having a natural reaction to not being treated like a person. Made me feel better because I basically screamed the same thing the same at someone relatively recently and I've been feeling weird about it.
this channel showing up in my recommendations out of absolutely nowhere is the only good thing the youtube algorithm has ever done. i laughed and cried. see you in grandma's backyard.
That comic narration was absolutely beautiful!! And the overall video was incredibly thoughtful and well done. I may actually take a break from anime and watch WandaVision after this! Lastly I think I aspire to be an "Authoritarian Wine Mom"✨
It's addiction, it's depression, it's craving an escape to your loneliness, and even more so it's being addicted to your perpetual pain. wanda knows its fake somehow. it's not the real vision, physically at least, and that balancing of knowing he's gone yet indulging in that fantasy is its own form of self harm
I still don't get how anyone thinks the first episodes were bad. They were at the same time fantastic homages to sitcoms and psychological horror. From the costumes to the acting, the intros and the special effects made to look like effects from that sitcoms of that period they were just amazingly made. Just as the rest of the show. I'm glad they tried something new with this and the only major problem is the bait with Quicksilver beeing from the X-Men universe and how that is resolved. And maby the miletary guy beeng a bit too "generic evil dude".
3:26 bro thank god I’m not the only one that likes the first two eps. If anything they are my favorites episodes because they are just such a beautiful homage to the era.
Monica at the end saying how she could see herself doing the same thing to bring her mother back was such a mood. 😭 This character seriously got shafted by COVID fucking up the filming schedules, she deserved a much bigger role near the end, but that line was still nice.
Ok hold up hold up. The INTRO?!?!! Did you make that? If you did make that, why aren't you doing that full time? Bruh, DO THAT SHIT FULL TIME! If you didn't make that. WHERE CAN I GET MORE?!?!?!? Edit: The intro actually inspired a google search spiral, and apparently Comic audiobooks and Motions Comics are a thing that exist.I genuinely did not know that people did that!
I just realized you only had 2k subs and I had been watching your videos under the assumption that you had millions because that’s what your quality of video deserve😱 I don’t doubt you’ll achieve that accomplishment
It's interesting thinking of the situation like an addiction. Now that I see it, I think of the two times Wanda was willing to bring down the Hex in the finale as an addict giving up drugs. The first time Wanda does it, it is like an addict thinking they can just up and quit with no plan or support or anything to make quitting easier and ultimately cannot stop when it's too painful. The second and successful time, it in line with an addict who now knows what they are giving up and are now more willing to suffer the pain of withdraw, knowing it is for the best and willing to suffer through the withdraw to get to the other side.
thank you for explaining why Dottie's blood was red! I knew there was a meaning or reason behind it, but I didn't know what. also, loving the chaotic energy
Completely off topic, but I've never actually seen Kristen Joy Schaal before and hearing Mabel/Sarah Lynn's voice coming out of a physical being was like a slap in the fucking face

honestly, i think my one criticism with the show was that it moved too fast. there should’ve been more episodes concerning her sitcom fantasy before it turned upside down with Agatha; and i personally think it would’ve been better if we saw everything from wanda’s perspective- horror uses perspective often, to show the watcher how insane, or messed up someone’s perception of reality is. It would’ve tied to the stakes of her altering reality and how horrified she was when she realized she did.
Ok but CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE CHOKING PLEASE?! We get Mr. Heart choking, the FIRST sit-com reality break. Then at the very end Wanda choking the residents is the LAST sit-com reality break, because that's when she lets go of the idea of it altogether. Genius. Level. Stuff. The only other occurrence I can recall is Agatha choking the twins, but that doesn't tie in as well thematically. Would never have noticed, but then it's just mentioned at 8:00 like it's obvious and I was just like :O
@@StinkySister They literally set those vibes for future MCU films. I'm looking forward to seeing that play out in hopefully a Scarlet Witch film. The world deserves it.
My favorite things about the laugh tracks in sitcoms: 1. When removed, the actors stand awkwardly in silence every time they make a joke. 2. There's always the one person in the live audience (if used) who very loudly, aggressively laughs at the jokes and you can always hear over everyone else if you listen. that's it. in conclusion, sitcoms are my childhood. without them, I would not be the person I am today. Thank you Dick Van Dyke, for everything. Your show was subtly misogynistic but I forgive you, for it was the 60s. Now, Cheers, as much as I love you, you're overtly sexist and judge people's bodies, as well as the intelligence of one unnamed female main character. Ah, sitcoms. I have mixed feelings but I'll always love you.
listen this is the first time ive seen one of your videos, and im only 2 mins into the video but the performance of who ever voiced Wanda in this is doing the absolute MOST and im genuinely taken back by how emotional this was??????? i hope who ever voiced this is having A REALLY GOOD DAY and they know how hard their acting skills go
Hi I’m pretty sure you’re actually psychic. I was cleaning my room while watching this and right when I started gathering all the dirty cups to bring to the kitchen you said “look around your room and the amount of used cups is the amount of push ups you have to do right now” I stood there for a solid minute very much convinced you could see me through the screen. And no I didn’t do the push ups.
I love your take on it. I wouldn't exactly say it's addiction, rather denial, grief and depression (since that's what the whole production team went for) but the comparison to addiction certainly made sense as well
well art is up for interpretation. art doesn’t necessarily belong to its creators it belongs to an audience. an audience projects meaning onto it. many things meant to be seen one way can also be interpreted another way and that’s not bad.
@@liamross340 absolutely agree! I just said that I personally feel it doesn't fully compare to addiction and that the creators went for a 5 stages of grief kind of thing, but i didn't mean to say he was wrong. As you said, it's up to the audience to interpret those kinds of things in various ways
@@ko-lq7vu agree. She turned to addiction to deal with grief. Her addiction allowed her to be in denial. The hex is her drug of choice rather than alcohol or other drugs.
Something I wanted to add (I know I'm a month late) was that Wanda's comfort in sitcoms reminded me of Young Justice's M'gann. She too, feels out of touch and seeks out comfort in the simplicity of TV, abliet for different reasons. One episode when M'gann and Superboy are undercover, he vents this frustration he gets from her because of this, because she tries so hard to keep everyone going in the way she wishes, "...stupid little fantasy world where every problem's solved in half-an-hour!" Later in the series where she opens up about her hold on TV, this quote becomes phenomenal. While watching Wandavision, this quote wouldn't leave my head. Up to episode 5 it fits this narrative, episode is over so are the issues. Its a parallel I found really interesting and I'm not sure anyone thought about it cuz DC cartoon crossover with Marvel live action show
This was amazing, also so many little details that I never noticed before - the halloween full of kids thing, the line where she says “you’re not supposed to-“ and trails off - chills man, chills
Wait, there were people who thought that Vision pleading for answers from a reality he has no memory of to his partner who is actively controlling everything and lying about it was him being a domestic abuser?! Oh the world we live in
3 years later: I'm watching Chimp Crazy, and it's amazing how much of what you say here about the rationalization of abuse is relevant to that show as well.
*Me crying uncontrollably during this whole video* "And this, children, is why you should always go pick up your prescribed serotonin meds ♡" Fuck, I never considered Wandavision being an analogy about drugs and abuse. I gotta go rewatch it now
When this man said “don’t ask me how I know...but this is the look of an addiction, getting her FIRST HIT”😂😂😂 Cause why did she look eeeexaaaactly like that??! SUBSCRIBED👏🏾😂
15:09 Paul Bettany did SUCH an amazing job in this scene. It’s remarkable, upon consideration, how in control of the tone he is. Vision is yelling but he never for a second comes off as the aggressor. He’s not threatening, the viewer would never characterize what he’s doing as yelling at Wanda. In fact it was only what you said a bit earlier that even made me consider the possibility that he _could_ have come off that way. Throughout the whole scene, every last word, he comes off as an embattled innocent, at the end of his rope, terrified, confused, pleading with Wanda to treat him like a person. Bettany has such absolute control of the precise emotional tone of Vision’s outburst. Also, I have a thing about men yelling, it really bothers me on a deep level, and this scene never hit that switch for me, not at all, like I said until you mentioned Wanda’s DARVO response I hadn’t even considered that he was in fact technically yelling at her.
The line about Vision having a normal reaction means more to me than I can express. I don't go to church, but here I am on a Sunday morning, getting a little absolution. Thank you. 💜
Wanda sounds like an abusive parent: creating autonomously conscious beings as props, forcing them to live in her fantasy world at any cost, stifling dissent, then pulling a nonsensical “I thought you were happy!”
Exceptionally impressed by that performance of the first few pages of House of M. Incredible how just translating it into spoken words added so much weight and depth. I remember that scene, I’ve read it several times. The emotion of it has never hit me as well as hearing it spoken aloud.
I kinda want to rewatch Wandavision already because there are so many things about it that I don’t feel like I properly absorbed in the first watch through. I accurately predicted that the screenplay writers were going to have more creative freedom in the new Marvel TV shows but it’s still cool to see just how far they’re going to go. I’d actually be interested in seeing a video on the evolution of Marvel TV from 2010 forward because there have been shows that no one talks about anymore even though they are just as good as their modern descendants, like Agent Carter.
This video made me fall in love with the show all over again. The way this video is presented is so succinct and logical and grounded in emotions. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this
Barked out laughing at 20:10, got crazy chills at 20:50 . You’re incredible, so glad I found your channel. You’re so fucking interesting, love your mind, look, humor and especially how fast you talk. it’s perfect for my adhd brain
As much as I empathize with Wanda, this video needs to be watched by those people who keep justifying and defending her with the: "sHe LoST EvErYtHiNg, I dOn'T bLaMe hEr FoR cReAtInG a NeW rEaLiTy tO bE hApPy, ShE's NoT eViL". Oh yes, faux happiness and joy can originate from unhealthy and abusive situations, too. Also, who said evil couldn't be merely an unintentional behavior driven by fear and sadness rather than simple wickedness?
Depends on your definition of 'evil', really. Evil is sadistic, evil rejoices in doing harm, or at least doesn't care if harm is done as long as an objective is reached. Wanda's not it. She deserves blame, she should be held accountable, but the simple fact that the nail on her perfect world's coffin was when she realized the pain she was causing shows that she's not evil. Would someone who attempts suicide by car (because they are afraid and sad) and hurts an innocent bystander be evil? I think 'evilness' is one of those concepts where intention matters.
@@lorenagagamonster she did know to some extent what she was doing before the end and she preformed what ammounts to a lobotomy on the woman who 1. Broke her out of her delusion and 2. Wanted her to not have the power she had because as we’ve seen it’s dangerous. The most evil thing Agatha does is sing a song about how evil she is which ends with her revealing she killed a fake dog.
It’s crazy but as an addict I hadn’t even considered the addiction reading, until now when someone smarter than I am pointed it out 😂 but seriously, when you said “that’s the face of a fiend who might not get well” WOOF. It really is, and now that you’ve framed it that way, her reaction to those Fear Of God moments literally sends shivers down my spine and gives me goosebumps, a little ripple of that dopesick chill just at the thought

Woahhh I got chilling listening to the reading of 0:29 -1:52.
Same. Talented woman voicing Wanda there!
Right!?!? Who is reading Wanda??
Where can I find this reading!?
He says Lauren Mcginty (not sure if that is right)? From screen rant. In the last few seconds of the video.
I want to know who read it. The emotions that she heat me with her voice is unrealistic.
this channel showing up in my recommendations out of absolutely nowhere is the only good thing the youtube algorithm has ever done. i laughed and cried. see you in grandma's backyard.
Truly this channel came out of nowhere but it's perfect
That comic narration was absolutely beautiful!! And the overall video was incredibly thoughtful and well done. I may actually take a break from anime and watch WandaVision after this!
Lastly I think I aspire to be an "Authoritarian Wine Mom"✨
Watch it! WandaVision is an emotional rollercoaster that'll leave you wanting more :D
Your voice is oddly aggressively comforting. Like my Bostonian Dad yelling at me to eat something or I'll die
"Like Simon Peter before her, she denies God *thrice*" you really made me dig up that sunday school knowledge but I subscribed so I guess it worked
3:26 bro thank god I’m not the only one that likes the first two eps. If anything they are my favorites episodes because they are just such a beautiful homage to the era.
also they made me really like and care about Wanda and Vision
Monica at the end saying how she could see herself doing the same thing to bring her mother back was such a mood. 😭 This character seriously got shafted by COVID fucking up the filming schedules, she deserved a much bigger role near the end, but that line was still nice.
‘NEW TYPE OF ABUSE JUST DROPPED’ LMAO
The narration at the beggining legit made me tear up??? You deserve a million subscribers that's all I got to say

I was surprised to hear that people say it takes a while to get good, because I thought it got worse at the end, I guess with Agatha
Oh wow these video essays are energetic and don’t use “stereotypical video essay voice” I love it.
thank you for explaining why Dottie's blood was red! I knew there was a meaning or reason behind it, but I didn't know what.
also, loving the chaotic energy
The voice actors on the intro are so good
I love how absolutely nothing is in focus at basically any point of this entire video. mood.
The voice actor for Wanda in the beginning was fucking immaculate
Definitely, had to watch it a few times because the performance was just so good.
@@thejadedjester4935 i can agree, she had no right to be that good,,
Completely off topic, but I've never actually seen Kristen Joy Schaal before and hearing Mabel/Sarah Lynn's voice coming out of a physical being was like a slap in the fucking face
Wait really? You should see if you can watch at least the first season of Last Man on Earth. She’s hilarious in that.
I love how “Positive Marvel Critique” is listed in the trigger warning. And honestly, as an MCU fan, I think that is completely understandable.
when it comes to media, ben feels like a optimistic little angel on my shoulder and cj is the dirty philisophical little devil on the other
was about to start sobbing and then you said “how do magnets work?” thank you for breaking the tension LMFAO
I started to get superhero fatigue after Captain Marvel and I thought that was it for me and the MCU. WandaVision actually managed to make me interested and invested enough to rewatch the entire Infinity Saga again and I’m so glad I did
It’s criminal that you’re not the most subscribed account on UA-cam. The algorithm favored me today and I’ve binged it all. Each video has been absolutely incredible! Thank you for sharing.
I'm in your exact position rn

you ever notice how the the outsider in this made up sitcom is a black women? someone would be an "outsider" in a real sitcom of that time period

@@wetfishbits as much as I'd like to believe you're wrong I know you're right.
Omg I really don’t think it had anything to do with race. They just wanted to introduce Monica as a new badass superhero and this is how they did it.
@@user-gr1xi4kd7o i was just making an observation. chill
honestly, i think my one criticism with the show was that it moved too fast. there should’ve been more episodes concerning her sitcom fantasy before it turned upside down with Agatha; and i personally think it would’ve been better if we saw everything from wanda’s perspective- horror uses perspective often, to show the watcher how insane, or messed up someone’s perception of reality is.
"If you're listening to this while driving, don't worry about looking at the road, look at me and trust your gut." I laughed so hard.
Agatha was done so wrong in the end. Like damn, sis didn't deserve that. I felt so bad.
yeah! it sent very mixed signals
She could’ve been an anti hero and use her powers for good
I think they did her like that to set up Dr Strange
wtf she killed sparky!!!
@@StinkySister They literally set those vibes for future MCU films. I'm looking forward to seeing that play out in hopefully a Scarlet Witch film. The world deserves it.
My favorite things about the laugh tracks in sitcoms:
I have mixed feelings but I'll always love you.
listen this is the first time ive seen one of your videos, and im only 2 mins into the video
but the performance of who ever voiced Wanda in this is doing the absolute MOST and im genuinely taken back by how emotional this was??????? i hope who ever voiced this is having A REALLY GOOD DAY and they know how hard their acting skills go

"look around at the amount of used cups and do that many of pushups" [sighs, gets on the ground]
bro Wanda is literally the embodiment of “gaslight, gatekeep, girl boss” 💀
This is like a shit post, textual analysis and beat poetry mixed together
Hi I’m pretty sure you’re actually psychic. I was cleaning my room while watching this and right when I started gathering all the dirty cups to bring to the kitchen you said “look around your room and the amount of used cups is the amount of push ups you have to do right now” I stood there for a solid minute very much convinced you could see me through the screen. And no I didn’t do the push ups.
I love your take on it.
I wouldn't exactly say it's addiction, rather denial, grief and depression (since that's what the whole production team went for) but the comparison to addiction certainly made sense as well
i feel like it’s both. the denial/grief/depression feeds the addiction aspect
well art is up for interpretation. art doesn’t necessarily belong to its creators it belongs to an audience. an audience projects meaning onto it. many things meant to be seen one way can also be interpreted another way and that’s not bad.
Its a parallel I found really interesting and I'm not sure anyone thought about it cuz DC cartoon crossover with Marvel live action show
Was rent due for the Wanda voice actress because they really put their all into that 😳
Wow the voice for Wanda is giving it a hundred and ten percent and I’m HERE FOR IT also wtf were the voices for prof Xavier
This was amazing, also so many little details that I never noticed before - the halloween full of kids thing, the line where she says “you’re not supposed to-“ and trails off - chills man, chills
The WandaVision finale is one of the few pieces of media to actually make me cry entirely because what's going on is just so painful.
Wait, there were people who thought that Vision pleading for answers from a reality he has no memory of to his partner who is actively controlling everything and lying about it was him being a domestic abuser?!
Oh the world we live in
"Wandavision takes a while to get good." Oh, so it's like most stories throughout human history.
can't wait to borrow someone's Disney Plus acct just to torment myself with this apparent emotional masterpiece because CJ said it was good
the voice acting for the House of M opening had me crying real, genuine tears
Her head tilt right before saying “can’t I?” Stilllll gives me chills
The argument in A Very Special Episode was so raw and powerful. Like ugh, I love Paul Bettany
3 years later: I'm watching Chimp Crazy, and it's amazing how much of what you say here about the rationalization of abuse is relevant to that show as well.
That comic reading was intense, the girl doing the wanda voice nailed it
*Me crying uncontrollably during this whole video*
"And this, children, is why you should always go pick up your prescribed serotonin meds ♡"
Fuck, I never considered Wandavision being an analogy about drugs and abuse. I gotta go rewatch it now
This has such an overly edgy theatre kid vibe to it.
That reading of House of M was amazing
Lauren McGinty did an absolutely ASTOUNDING voice acting job in this video, holy shit

the way Wanda just fell under her own spell the moment she saw vision was just so sad but so beautiful
Mom: Remember, always say no to drgus!
Me seeing there are more CJ The X videos: Aww shit (preps arm)
This is it
Depends on your definition of 'evil', really.
As a former drug addict I won't defend it but deeply empathize with it.
@@lorenagagamonster your statement is perfect
@@lorenagagamonster she did know to some extent what she was doing before the end and she preformed what ammounts to a lobotomy on the woman who 1. Broke her out of her delusion and 2. Wanted her to not have the power she had because as we’ve seen it’s dangerous.
The most evil thing Agatha does is sing a song about how evil she is which ends with her revealing she killed a fake dog.
Bruh this voice acting !?!? AMAZING
the joke about the male gaze/gays was the best thing I've heard in over 4 years of studying film, that was excellent!
