- Part 1 of 2 - Our sweet potato harvest for 2019. We are harvesting our sweet potato raised bed garden boxes as we wind down the raised bed gardening season. We have earlier videos on growing sweet potatoes and how to grow large sweet potatoes in raised garden beds. These include our secret super soil mix for sweet potatoes. We also have videos on our sweet potato pie recipe and other recipes for sweet potatoes in our cooking and canning playlist. Sweet potatoes are a great addition too any vegetable garden, and like most root vegetables, they are extremely nutritious.
Hint: We add a pinch of pumpkin pie spice to most of our sweet potatoes as something new. And in a pie, it makes them taste almost identical to a pumpkin pie.

Tina is a lovely hard working lady. As I watch her eyes and hands work hard for the sweet goodness, I realize she’s become one with the soil and the sweet potatoes. It’s so much you can do with cooking them, I love to make them cooked, mashed added lots of cinnamon a little nutmeg with raisins and nuts, butter and cream and marshmallows on the top. Of course I love them with the homemade pies, I make a stew with white and sweet potato chunks and lamb or goat meat, a little curry and parsley, onions and cilantro and the meat simmered with garlic. Try these recipes, you’ll like them and the leftovers are even better. Take care, God bless.

We will soon be moving to our own homestead in north eastern Texas. We can't wait to put in beds for planting. I think if you pull up sweet potato recipes, they are so versatile that you will find something you like... And a sweet potato pie made correctly is very hard to tell from pumpkin....

I love digging in the dirt like tina.. thanks for sharing..great flippin harvest.. I planted some here on oregon coast.. not ready yet.. I'm getting blooms now.. second year planting and last year was dissapointing..
We do a lot of test digging (more than we let on) to make sure they are where we need them to be... They can go much longer than 120 days if need be... There have been years we had to leave them until the plants were completely dead....

I am just learning what a rotten job I have done with my Sweet potatoes, I loved your video, just plain, friendly, and my favorite was your wife. I love to see and feel the dirt with my hands. She is a trooper. Your glasses are wonderful, I also am light sensitive,so I appreciate you guys. I don't have many potatoes to plant but they will multiply. I don't have a big tub like you do but I will improvise. Should I be digging them up now, I have had so many try to explain planting and harvesting. Thank you friends. Heyas Vicki... The best thing you can do if you have questions is just simply start sweeping away the dirt around the crown of a plant and feel down if you have well developed potatoes... This will not hurt them or the plant... Usually, harvest is 120 days after planting... Or when about 30% of the leaves have changed color... Or when you see potatoes pushing up the dirt, or showing on the surface....

My mom and I just received our new glasses from the VA (McGuire) about 2-3 weeks or so ago. 😊 40 years of service between the both of us. I love those glasses.😎 I never tire of watching harvest videos. Those are some HUGE sweet potatoes!! Love it😊 And, those round beds are so cool.
My only real complaint about them was my belief I had to order only one pair, so my bifocals are built in... My smart wife asked more questions than I did, and they made her separate reading and driving glasses... LOL I will know next time...

I have never seen such big sweet potatoes before. My dear mother sure would have loved to have seen those. I just wonder what my parents would thought about todays new way of raised bed gardening. That wasn't around when they were raising a garden. Have a nice Sunday.
I can tell you that growing up, I spent many hours working in my mother's garden (a row garden as you are describing) and earlier this year I bought her her first raised beds... She REALLY enjoys them... I am sure your mother would have adapted too... On the other hand, a lot of new gardeners have trouble row gardening like our parents did... That takes a whole different set of skills...

Wow!!! Sweet Potato Blessings!!! I’ve never seen those that big!!! Man God has truly blessed y’all with green thumbs!!!
We worked so hard on getting our garden in an working on it all summer but unfortunately our garden was very disappointing this year!!! I honestly believe it was our crazy weather!! We had 19 days in a row of triple digit temps after a very cool and very wet spring. So strike one we had to plant late. Due to weather then it went straight to the hot hot summer!! With no rain. So lots of fruitless plants, lots of sterile acting plants!! And we even would go out early and hand pollinate the squash and zucchini ! Still disappointing what little fruits we did get weresmall and not that tasty. Now our spinach did great we were able to eat several meals with fresh salads. We even replanted and this time it’s small not much of a great taste so once again poooo .......... I’m so thankful to see your gardens are doing so well!! Makes my heart smile😃💕 I’ve been really sick for a couple of months now and I’m way behind on your videos. Got to get caught up! Hope your weekend is full of rest and blessings! Love n Hugs
Usually with hot weather like that comes extra watering, etc... And that has a tendency to leach nutrients deeper into the soil where the plants have trouble getting at them... Its hard to gauge how much nitrogen will burn them in the sun, but blood meal in your feedings will help a lot... We like to mix 2 bags of bone meal to one bag of blood meal, then mix that with the Jobes Tom and Veg fertilizer... That right there will get your through most spots...

I know a lot of people scoffed at the expense of putting that thing in... Over the years though, we are down to just a few cents per pound of potatoes harvested, and you sure can't buy them for that... LOL All our best to you and Buster for sure ! This is the first year that we have grown sweet potatoes. We were inspired by your “giant planter” to try growing them in three large pots. We’ve been gardening for over forty-five years. First time to grow our own slips and first time to grow sweet potatoes. Hoping that we get something!

My husband loved sweet potatoes anyway you could fix them..l love them baked with butter and Brown sugar and cinnamon.. my mother-in-law would peel and slice them up then fry them in a mixture of butter and oil..Holidays I'd make candied sweet potatoes..so yeah, anyway you can fix them..
