    Good work Phil! Just ran an audio tape that kept squeaking and torqued the player so it would not play. Tore it open, cleaned it with electric contact cleaner, stripped out the screws for the shell. Needless to say transplanted the tape into 2 or three different cases that kept breaking. Messed around for about 6 hours with one tape. Got a good transfer in the end. Most people simply don't reslize what it takes to do this work. Thanks for showing what you do.

      Thanks! This type of work should only be done by obsessive, persistence individuals! You’re absolutely right, people don’t appreciate what goes into this stuff. 90% of the time let’s say it all goes well, 10% of the tapes don’t and that 10% takes you 500% longer to do than the 90%!

    I see that is an ampex tape, for all Ampex video tape and Ampex 456 audio tape those tapes have an overwhelming tendency to suffer from sticky shed syndrome and must be treated accordingly. Lots of resources online about how to do that

    I feel like you need to film testimonials by the clients. so not to be one guy just screaming in to the camera. also if you get to use some of the video of the clients while the clients talk over it and about how well you saved there memories. you could have some really hart felt moments. plus having the client talk about how bad of a time they had with others.

      Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I agree although most people don’t want to be on camera and most of my customers are in other parts of the country and world and all my videos are spontaneous and off cuff as I’m dealing with problems popping up, I’m more about the mechanics, the Google reviews have all the mushy, heartfelt stuff.

    You don’t realllyyy need it but that metal barrel goes on the take up reel side. Right in front of the white plastic roller. Love your rants dude!

      Yeah, I left it out! All worked fine after! Glad you’re enjoying the rants! I’m over the complaining about crap transfers and on the other side of the fence are the tire kickers wanting stuff done for $8 a tape! Good bloody luck!

    I received a bunch of VHS tapes last year and one Biography VHS tape was squealing while playing even though it was stored in a climate controlled environment. I ended up taking the tape apart, lifting the spools out of the way, cleaning where under the spools lay with 91% alcohol and put two tiny drops of oil and spread that around with a cotton ball and wipe it with another cotton ball. Then I put it back together and put it in my VCR and kept exercising it (forwarding, rewinding, etc) and when I played it, the tape worked like a champ! Luckily I never had personal home videos that have this issue (knock on wood).

    That small metal tube thing goes on the oposite side of the tape so it mirrors the one on the left not the middle, it sits on the small black nipple thats next to the white tape guide

    Yep. Analog data recovery. Actually, the more reputable hard drive data recovery companies practically do the entire data recovery before they give the customer a quote. That way, they know how much to charge and know they can provide most of the data for the price they quote. It also helps them know that if they can't recover the data, they aren't charging for something they can't provide. It often requires physical repairs just like what you are doing.

      That’s good to hear, stories I’ve heard aren’t as transparent!

      @@gotmemories Well, like your own story, some companies are ethical and actually care while others aren't and only care about profit. Like you say, do some research and read reviews before the jump...

    If anywhere other than Arizona I'd definitely have put that Ampex tape in to bake. I literally sucked my teeth until you mentioned Phoenix. Kinda sad considering they basically started the recording industry as we know it. Well, Jack Mullen, Bing Crosby, and Les Paul did.

    Thanks for some great info, but I have a vcr squealing problem, do you have a video where you troubleshoot a player instead of the tape?

    • @gotmemories
      @gotmemories  17 днів тому

      Yes lots. You’ll need to get that vcr repaired or just find some other ones on eBay.

    If people don't want to pay, perhaps they should learn to digitize it themselfs and then maybe just maybe, they'll understand the effort required and price you charge.
