Missing the Awake album is like missing Beethoven's 9th symphony. It's an amazing album.

This song was actually Kevin Moore's swan song before he left the band.

How about the lyrics in 6:00 too. Awkward much?

Space Dye Vest is like slow poison to me (in a good way). Didn't like it as much the first time, but keeps getting better every time you listen to it. This is among my top 5 favorite songs of all time of any band of anything. I love this one so much.

Scarred from Awake. Such a great song.

wow - James does some of his best singing on Awake .. its my #2 DT album .. Petrucci started using the 7 string on it too. This song is all Kevin Moore.. he wrote it

Portnoy tried to get Kevin Moore MANY times to play this song with them for the first time live. The band finally gave in and surprised everyone on this tour. A classic DT song...

Please give the whole album a few listens. The guitar solo at the end of The Mirror is god mode legendary. Kevin Moore actually sings on the demo version of Space Dye Vest.

I will definitely be giving it a listen! Friends of mine who are big DT fans say while this song is good, it's not their favorite. So maybe I'll like the other songs more.

I use the original Awake version as one of 3 tracks that I use to test new speakers, I love that you can hear the pedals on the piano clicking down, very real.

You have to be in the mood to hear this song. This live version lacks the ambience and atmosphere of the studio version. Please check out the original version and let that one soak in. You'll see why. Try to listen and research the background voices.

The thing with this song is you need to listen to the whole Awake album to "get" this song. I love this song, maybe my favorite from that album, along with Scarred. But like all other Dream Theater albums, picking out individual tracks loses their gravitas a bit, like admiring a small segment of a great painting.

The amazing guitar solo on this live version is not on the original track but it is still amazing.

Was lucky enough to see this show when they were in Australian for this tour. They were epic.
Have a look at Ne Obliviscaris. And plague flowers the kaleidoscope live in Colorado.

20 years as a dream theater fan and you haven’t heard Kevin Moore’s fair well song. Incredible 😅
Go on and listen the album version. This is a special one.
The timing of this video is easy to tell even without seeing Mangini in the drums. Just need to listen James. He is just so far from what he used to be. Sadly though

This was the first and only time they preformed this song live. Kevin Left right after recording Awake and they didn't feel right performing it without him since they thought it was "100% his song". In the studio version, Labrie doesn't go up the octave at the end like he does in this version nor does Petrucci take a solo. I'm glad they did finally end up performing it live but I think I prefer the studio version because it's a bit more subtle and feels so completely different from anything else DT has done and even from the rest of the album. The lyrics are also worth looking into because they talk about something that's so relatable yet from an angle that isn't normally talked about.

Not in my top 30 DT songs , to be fair i don't think i hate it as much as i want to hate it because i never skipped it .

Yeah, I feel kinda indifferent about this one. I LOVE Dream Theater, so even an "okay" DT song is pretty good in my books.

Wow man, "Awake" is one of my favorite Dream Theater albums. This one is very mood heavy, I actually liked this performance but the studio version is the shit.

Unleash The Archers..... " Awakening " (full Band play through) just to get you started.... DT has been my only fave till this Canadian Power House Band came to my inbox (suggestion ? ) by accident ???? Don't know..... But the Best accident I've had.... these people are incredible !!! Hope you find some time to give it a shot.... The song I mentioned is the first of a 2 album concept story.... penned by the singer Brittney Slayes. 1st album "Apex" is more metal "fantasy" (setting up chapters of the story) 2nd album "Abyss" is Full On !!!! ALL chapters come to light in this Epic album!!! JP/ DT is my fave guitar player.... but Dude.... Check this Out.... Abyss has some Heavy DT vibes!!! but all their own !! Cheers !!! (if you already know of them, never mind.. and sorry)

Well that was a journey. I found you by your The Hu band reactions, you haven't done "The Great Chinggis Khaan" or "The Song of Women" featuring Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. Moving on. I haven't looked through your list yet, so if you are already doing reactions to these groups I'm sorry. First one is The Brothers of Metal, ironically their lead singer is a female half the time, start with "One". Second Connor Engstrom, his cover of "Let It Go". And last for Christmas watch Small Town Titans version of "Your A Mean One Mr.Grinch". Enjoy.

The recording is new because this was the first time they played this song live. I think they did not like the song very much back in the days and when they changed the keyboard player they kind of let the song aside.
In this album I would recomend Voices

Who suggested this for a "metal guitarist reacts to.."? I mean it's a phenomenal song but not one to showcase Petrucci's metal shredding/riffs really

This was my pick as I'm already a fan of the band but hadn't heard this particular song before. I'll probably be doing more from Awake in time. 🙂

I don't blame you for not really digging this song. This may be THE most non-conventional DT song they have (I know that a "conventional DT song" is very broad, but in terms of their influences and usual sounds, this one doesn't fit in with many others.)
I believe Kevin Moore was going for this sort of melancholy and "left hanging" feel, and while it does a good job of that, it's not really for me.
Another DT song that sort of does the same thing (yet 100x better, imo) is "Disappear". Since you're a big DT fan already, you may have already heard it. If not, I recommend it as a better "sad song".
Either way, I enjoyed your inputs, and it's nice to see another big DT fan! Keep up your work man!

I take Dream Theater out of the metal category. They are somewhat different
