    While adding a single oak tree to the island is an awesome idea, you would need to be careful on placement, so that the root system won’t bust through your clay 15-20 years down the road.

    • @bigjimmitchell
      @bigjimmitchell 3 роки тому +13

      You're right... species selection is going to be important. Luckily though oak is a taproot system so they grow vertical for the most part and you only to see lots of lateral growth in dry years roots also travel the path of least resistance and clay is resistant and once they hit that 2 feet of heavy clay the roots will turn and go back down. Oak trees, in general, are also a variety that grows toward the sun and that will impact how the root system grows but seeing as how this tree would have sun from all angles it would grow very straight and the root system would grow in a similar fashion. I would say you definitely do not want to go with Red oak because they are unique in the variety where their roots system grows much much larger than the canopy.

    You could make a pontoon cable ferry to be able to get on the island, without making it accessible to predators. 12x15ft pontoon, a cable secured between the island and the mainland that runs through a pipe mounted on your pontoon to guide it, and a rope or chain to drag yourself across. You can even use the pontoon as an extra mobile fishing platform between the island n the shore.

    That pond depth thing is something I never heard of. We have quarries here in the Northeast that can be 100ft plus deep and they have the cleanest water and biggest fish. Learn something new every day, thanks.

    • @pamike4873
      @pamike4873 3 роки тому +21

      Quarries are much different than ponds. In almost all cases, but especially in the Northeast, quarries are filled by groundwater. They don't get much runoff from rain. Believe it or not, the water isn't stagnant like you would think. It's refreshed continuously, albeit slowly, by the movement of the groundwater. A pond that isn't spring or steam fed, like this one, relies on convection to circulate. If it's too deep, the water at the bottom of the pond will be depleted and when convection happens, that water will now be on the top where the fish live. It's crazy, but there is science behind everything, even pond depth. It's pretty cool I think.

    I think you should name the frog Jeremiah. Awesome videos. Really enjoy them. I can see a lot of family time around this pond and a lot of memories going to be made.

    The best thing you could use to access the island would be a pontoon boat, and you can find them without the motor or furniture on them pretty cheap. Or just mount a little battery operated motor on it for a floating dock you can put anywhere on the pond. Leave it attached to your existing dock for extra room. With this you are able to access the island with large loads if needed. Love the pond build, thanks for sharing your story

    Having a much smaller pond for 25 years i learned a lot. Some are to late as your done but a couple are not. I would put a couple large cut trees in it. Lay them on there side. Turtles love to climb up and lay in the sun. Also, you will want some aeration. I would trench some black sprinkler pipe and install at least 5- 12in diffusers. You will have algae from the run off and this will help more than anything else you do.

    This has been such a great series. For the island, maybe put a gazebo out on it. That or some seriously over-engineered duck housing :-)

    Put a picnic table on the island for paddleboarders or canoers to have a snack at on the pond. Maybe think of two trees on the island and then you could put a hammock between them for a nice isolated place to rest and "think".

    With the pond dirt work completed, this is the best time to spread Ag Lime across the bottom for acidic soil. Usually about 2 tons per acre is recommended. Also are you going to put in Pea Gravel Bluegill Beds? It is much easier to lay the gravel liner before it fills up. Thank you for sharing 🍺 🎣

    This is really coming together!!! The table idea with the contours is an incredible idea for the oak table as well!!! I’ve always thought it’d be cool to have a skinny floating bridge to the island. 🏝🤙🙌👍
    Edit: later into the video after your point about the predators and the bridge, fair point! I’m excited to see ducks there in the future 🦆

    You should name the pond: “Anglin Pond” Anglin the last name of John and Clarence known for there escape from Alcatraz island. Anglin short form for Angling. I think it is a great name considering that the bass names are also criminals and you are naming the island Alcatraz island.

    That was an awesome idea tnt I also like how the clay will get more compact over time due to the amount of movement you could build like a tree house for the ducks and maybe make a fake tree and make some nesting boxes for some wild birds like owls or even some native birds to your area

    Not sure if you can get electricity out there or maybe solar lights but...... One of the main things you could always see on Alcatraz from mainland is Old Glory. I think you should put a pole with Old Glory flying high! Semper-Fi from Las Vegas, NV

    You should build a cabin/shelter with a beautyfull firepit area to Cook what you catch from the pond on the island, so you can boat out and camp with the kids ✌❤

    Bridge the gap between the island and the shore with a couple tensioned cables. Then get a floating platform that could use the cables as a guide to transport people to and from the island. (could make the cables move like a ski lift or just add a motor go the platform).

  • @aithunnid
    @aithunnid 3 роки тому +4

    I think instead of a bridge you should make a zip line from the dock to the island and be able to jump off the zip line and swim if you want to
    Edit: I got further into the video now and I have a suggestion for a name for the bullfrog. Trechter, it’s Dutch for hopper and she hopped in this clip so I thought it might be good (and it also sounds like tractor lol)

    Plant a cypress tree instead. An oak tree will drown after awhile of being surrounded by water. A cypress tree will do extremely well on an island. Plus ya know cypress knees look cool and would provide extra hiding spots for fish
