    The integral equation at 1:31 is actually valid and the answer is correct. But there are 4 solutions: ±1 and ±i.
    Neil could have answered 1 or even -1, but went on with i to rhyme words and be cooler.
    They even show it at 1:46 when he slowly pulls up the line (1) and puts a dot above (i) . This is a way to show that he thinks of answering 1 but goes on with i

      @@TheOpalHammer Alchemy was in fact simply chemistry, before chemistry was known as it is. That said, a lot of what we know in chemistry today traces it's origins to the study of alchemy.
      @Fireflux the reason he attacked his social relationships is because while Newton was extremely smart, he was also bat-shit crazy. Not eccentric, CRAZY. • @bleesev2
      @bleesev2 5 років тому +40

      I wouldn't call the math equation, or at least the answer, truly mathematically correct.
      Any answer of the form exp(2*Pi*k*i/64) where k = 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., 63 (IE: The 64 roots of unity) is a correct answer. This includes numbers like "i", "1", "-1," and "-i" as well as whats inbetween them. So that's 64 answers, not just "i".
      Actually the whole question is weird because "x^64" is just "1" in this case. So it like, you can raise it to whatever power you want and you'll get a different set of answers. You can raise the hidden variable to the power of infinity and get infinite possible answers. It's just a weirdly framed question.

    1:17 - For those interested in physics and dimensions, if you didn't notice it already, you'll appreciate this line particularly: "I accelerated the mind of mankind to a higher plane of understanding and I can calculate the weight and the size and the shape of the shadow of the mind you're standing in." When Carl Sagan was explaining higher planes of existence to laymen, he used his famous "Flatlanders" story to get the point across. He held a cube in front of a light so that it cast a shadow. As he rotated the cube in various positions, it's shape remained a cube but the shadow it cast changed. This showed that trying to calculate the weight and the size and the shape of an object in a higher plane just from its *SHADOW* is impossible. So Newton is bragging that he can do the impossible through an apparent veiled reference to that Flatlanders story. Not only is it an amazing line, but it once again showcases the brilliant minds behind ERB.

    Day 8 of asking for a battle between Euler and Newton
    I've been reflecting on the issue for this past week, and I have come to terms with the fact that there isn't really a reason to make a sequel to this with Euler. The gimmick of this fight is an antisocial genius vs a very popular pop scientist vs another popular actual scientist. That wouldn't really work with Euler, as while he was a pretty genial guy, he was also a mathematic mastermind, and that kind of goes against the whole interesting dynamic of this rap battle. Does that mean I'm gonna stop asking? Euler no, I do what I want.
    I find it an interesting thought, whether the meaning behind the action has any real meaning at all if the outcome is already known, like putting a water bottle in the recycling bin knowing full well the workplace just puts trash and recycling in the same bag. I choose to think that it's the meaning bothering to recycle in a world that doesn't essential to being human; not just going against the status quo stubbornly because we can, but because we are emotional creatures that rely on doing good and having human relationships to mentally survive. Not recycling is, at least somewhat, disconnecting oneself from the world. Am I an idealist? Probably. Is there no effect in the world from my recycling? Probably. Am I going to do it anyway? Yes, because I am Aidan DaGreat and I live how I fecking want.
    _Quote of the day from my Latin teacher_ : "You can go do that. No one else can."
    _Euler fact of the day_ : Euler was not a philosopher, at least not purposefully, as he despised how other philosophers would pretend to know what they said for material gain, which was the opposite of the "Less Things, More God and Fellow Man" philosophy that was prevalent at the time. However, people smarter than me have translated and analyzed Euler's letters, and believe that Euler had 3 "controversies", which in philosophy is things he debated (I think). One of these is the problem arisen by Descartes's dualism, that there are two bodies. Descartes, for those uninformed, said that there are two selves: the body, which is error prone and may or may not exist, and the mind, which undebatedly exists.Therefore, our mind could be possibly separated from our body, therefore it is distinct from our body.
    We'll be going over one controversy today. Euler believed that the "dualism of body and soul developed by Descartes resulted in problems whose "solutions" provoked the monistic ontologies of mechanic materialism on one hand and of spiritualism... on the other hand." [Can't provide links cus youtube, but go on Google Scholar and search up Robert E Bradley's and Ed Sandifer's book "Leonhard Euler: Life, Work, and Legacy". It's on page 98.
    So, what does that word salad mean? It means that the idea of dualism asked questions, and the answers to those questions contradicted each other, saying either that the body is definitely real or the mind is the only definitely real thing. I think. I’ve read that chapter 8 times, and still have little idea of what it means lol. So, what did Euler think about all this query-ing?
    He didn’t give a crap. He despised the contemporary philosophers going around, *especially* Wolffian metaphysics. Dude even submitted a paper to a philosophy competition he was judging that was described as the complete antithesis of modern philosophy! The paper was about 2 things, how Holy Scripture was defendable by the sciences and why the philosophers going against scientists should shut up. It’s a pretty harsh paper, especially for such a usually chill guy like Euler, but the vitriol it spits provides great insight into his beliefs: God is cool, science is cool, anyone against that is a nerd and smells his own farts.
    Euler believed that philosophy, while pretty cool, was being undermined by the current philosophers. You know, the ones yammering on and on about subjects they know nothing about, the self important nerds who feel the need to repeat their name, the type to type up half an essay in a youtube comment’s section about a philosophy they can’t even summarize fully. You know. Those guys. Euler believed that sometimes, opinions and philosophy didn’t need to be shared. The universe is awesome, with plenty to look at and find. Don’t lecture about something you barely understand. Just look around and see the stars' majesty in everything.
    I'm Aidan DaGreat, the artist is a nerd, and I regret nothing. Have a lovely day.

      @sithalo 9 років тому +1

      Samantha S well theres some logic to it. spacey scifi logic but still more logic than just having the creators say space magic and leave it at that lol.
      and even with no logic behind it they explain somewhat how it functions so its odd that he wouldnt know how it works.
      seen video with scientist talking about traveling to other stars and he described the Star Trek Warp Drive as if it folded space to just bridge the gap.

      Eldor503 That's not how that works.Just because there are 64 roots of unity, doesn't mean there are 64 answers.

    • @Eldor503
      @Eldor503 8 років тому +1

      Marquess Graye Could you explain me how that work then? I would have thought that the number of different answers is the number of elements of the set {exp(2kiPi/64)} with k from 0 to 63 - which is 64 -, but maybe you know things that I ignore.

    • @karolnowak6423
      @karolnowak6423 8 років тому +4

      Well... since i^2=-1 (by definition), then i^64=(i^2)^32=(-1)^32=1 (because -1^(2n)=1, where n is the natural number, obviously). So all answers of the set have to fullfill the requirement: x^64=1, where x is the answer.
      It is true, that situation creates 64 elements in theory, but it does not mean, that all of the 64 elements are elements with UNIQUE values (answers) for which equation x^64=1 is valid. Some of them can have the same value and thus overlap.
      I can think of x=1, x=-1 (since -1^(2n) is equivalent, when n=32), x =i, x = -i ( since (-i)^2 =i^2 anyway). That are only 4 answers. Maybe there are more, but definitely not 64.
