    Mel stop putting full boxes on the floor! Keep them high, turn an empty one upside down a put them on that. So much easier to lift when they are higher and less strain on your back. Good work Mel!

    • @MrPaulMorris
      @MrPaulMorris Місяць тому +6

      Spot on! Ideally keep everything around waist height. As we can see when taking totes straight from the trolley to the car, a straight lift is far easier.

      I thought the same thing. Would have been tax deductible.
      Or else - have casters on the shelves, wrap the entire shelf up and roll to move.
      Anything to not have to manually remove those books! 😞

    Unless there is an overriding reason (like all the power plugs are along a single wall), I'm surprised you didn't flip the plan. To me it seems like putting the shelves along the other wall would leave you a nice wide aisle to come in with a car or forklift. Having a wide aisle the length of the room, straight in from the door, all the way to the back wall for moving stock would be a good route.
    The way your initial floor plan looks now, when you come into the room through the big door your access deep into the space will be blocked by the wide rows of shelves across so much of the room. I'd like to hear your reasons for laying it out the way you did.
    Personally, I'd have put the packing bench and photo area in the back corner (where you started with the storage shelves) beside the office and all the shelving arranged on the opposite wall from the one you selected, so it doesn't interfere with the access in from the front door.
    That way, you could back your car right up to the packing area to load the outgoing mail and unload the incoming new books for processing, even when it is raining. Co-locating all the admin parts of the biz near the office, so you can use the little office once it turns cold and you need heat. 😉

    When Maisy was moving the big cardboard boxes of mailers, and then at the end of the video when they were stacked behind you with the office roof in the background, I kept thinking the roof of the office would be a great place for those boxes to be stored. They would be out of the way and keep your floorspace open. I know you don't like going up, but vertical spaces like the roof would be great to utilize. Especially for things like lightweight mailers that you only need to access occasionally. I know this video was filmed a while ago, so I'll just have to keep watching to see how things turned out.
    The other thought I had while watching was - lift with your legs, not with your back. Ouch! Glad you didn't hurt yourselves. And props to Maisy for helping her mom out!

    I'm in the process of replacing my racking and although, as a former engineer, I know I should be bolting them together, tie wraps are so much easier and do the job well enough!
    I don't envy you the move; books in any quantity can be really back breaking. Along with two colleagues in my 'day job', I'm currently engaged in sorting, counting, boxing and palletising 400k unsold books for return to the publishers. We are currently averaging about 7k per person per shift.

    An expandable conveyor track would be worth every penny for your business - stretch it out from the car to where your shelf is and pull the book down into the conveyor and the rollers do the work bringing it to the car. I’m thinking I would also prefer to pile up a pallet jack if those tubs and walk it down rather than load/unload the car. Everyone has their own process- great job though. I was just remembering watching you ship from that storage unit. How far you’ve come!!!🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

    Maybe for one shelf you can have bins for each thing labeled for like each genre of cookbooks that you normally sell in bundles that way if they are all in general the same type they can just be all in one bin and when you get enough you can then photograph and list etc. I’m sure that would work for the romance or author books as well that you bundle. Just put the name on the outside of the bin and when you’re sorting just add it in there until you can bundle. I don’t know just some thoughts. Love your videos!

    • @backfromburnout
      @backfromburnout  Місяць тому +2

      Yes. I had them organised like that in the beginning but they got sloppy as the tubs were too small for what I needed. I will go back to that type of system as it makes it so much easier to bundle.

    Great work ladies, treat yourselves to a massage to help recuperation. Easy for us to sit here and comment but there was a lot of manual lifting going on here. Surprised you did not fill the crates stacked on a pallet and then use the forklift to move them over. Not that would be helpful now. But one thing I would have done prior to moving the books, I would have labeled the shelves in the new warehouse.
    And I would have bought a couple more carts and use them all the way from the car to the shelf. Too many steps from the car to the cart. Take the cart to the car Mel! And both of yall should share in lifting!!! I’ll stop there. I’m taking some ibuprofen and a shot of whiskey after I watch this video, watching you is making me MY back hurt. ❤ you Mel! That way you're not pushing yourself too hard. have a good restfull rest of your day. Karen from Arizona

    I'm stil watching, but I've been calling out to and you haven't turned around. LOL. Two things: I think you should have gone lengthwise with the shelves since your warehouse is longer than it is wider, and I wish you would have given yourself a trolley-wide space at the end of the row by the wall, so you could come out the other end, instead of having to go back down the same aisle. These things will come back to piss you off down the road and they don't have an easy fix. I think you're going to end up switching the shelves to the long way. I think you were thinking about keeping one side for your different stations (photography, packing, and so on), but you could have done it with the shelves the other way. If you find this setup really slows you down, you'll figure out a way to right it. Using software designed to design your space, would have been incredibly helpful. Wow, you asked him to caulk all the walls and you're one smart cookie!! I wish you continued success and happiness. ❤
