SQ321 incident: Aviation analyst explains turbulence scenarios

- One person has been confirmed dead and multiple others injured, after a Singapore Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Flight SQ321 was flying from London's Heathrow Airport to Singapore when it encountered severe turbulence and was diverted to the Thai capital. The Boeing plane was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew. Thai authorities are set to hold a presser to address the incident. Mr Alvin Lie, an independent aviation analyst, shared more about different turbulence scenarios.

These Pilots did an absolutely amazing job! And well to the Thai Authorities, who was clearly very awesome in dealing with this emergency. They clearly have great emergency procedures and discipline, as they were ready and able to deal with this once the plane landed. Condolences to the family of the departed passenger. RIP.
Clear air turbulence! Now that’s something for you to know. It’s more dangerous than experiencing actual air turbulence because you have no prior knowledge of it coming and are ill-prepared for it. When the pilot says to fasten your seatbelts, take it seriously and DO IT! I reckon it’s best to be fastened to your seat 💺 all the time until it’s really necessary to go to the toilet! And make sure to make it quick at the restroom and get back to your seat and get fastened! 😅

Singapore Airlines is known as the best airline but things can always happen with the fluctuations in the weather. The captain was very good at deciding to make an emergency landing in Thailand.. Seeing the good help of Thailand, I feel admired and everyone. Very country should do the same help when emergencies like this occur.

. it’s different than normal turbuluence caused by clouds which is visible in radar. this one wasnt visible at all so there was no warning.

Totally understandable. Average people will not know how "clear" air turbulence differ from normal turbulence or what does it mean by "clear" air. I dont even know there are different types of turbulence. I believe this is live and the newscaster wont be able to google what is "clear" air turbulence while in the interview.

My worst experience of turbulence was a sudden drop of about 2-3 seconds flying thru bad weather from Jakarta to Singapore. And the drops happen many times along the trip. Not too scary for myself having done airborne jumps but very frightening for average individuals and children on the flight. And that was when we are EXPECTING turbulence as the pilots had warned us we’re flying thru bad weather. But turbulence causing the aircraft to drop from average 30,000 ft to 6,000 ft is almost like doing skydiving, worst is not expecting it while flying in CLEAR WEATHER! Only difference is the pilots managed to keep the aircraft IN CONTROL and land safely. That in itself…my utmost respect to the pilots!!

I totally agree. I thought he gave an excellent analysis. Two key points he made supporting CAT is that pilots will avoid obvious CN clouds, especially near the tropical convergence zone, and secondly other planes would have been in the area, and no one was issuing warnings.

My uncle, who flew for SQ as a captain before he retired, says that turbulence is a fact of life when flying, It's no different than a boat at sea. One of his funnier stories was he was called to come see a passenger who asked him to make the plane stop shaking.
I flew to KL and onto HCMC & Jakarta for over 10 yrs. Very often experienced turbulance over the bay of bengal. One time in a thunder storm the plane actually got hit by lightening and diverted.

Most of the time, lightning strikes on airplanes don't matter as the plane is made with that in mind, the current will just travel on the plane's skin and goes "out the back".
They may have diverted due to large amount or size of the thunderstorm at or near the destination and thus, unable to land there even if they perform holding pattern to wait it out. Better to land somewhere safe than risk running low/out of fuel at destination.
Pilots did an amazing job, declaring emergency and immediately diverting to Bangkok. Condolences to the family of the deceased.

I once experienced turbulence with thunderstorm and heavy rains in the middle of the night when on my way to NY, the plane shakes rigorously a few times, I was so scared at that time and feeling very helpless. I closed my eyes and prayed and thought I shall accept what it come as I couldn’t escape anyway, putting my life to fate… fortunately , the turbulence stopped after a few minutes … that was my 23hrs flight in the air !
Senior Flight Commanders are saying this turbulence is a normal event. The descent was normal. What is at issue is the initial 'bump' and passengers not being secured.

i once flew with Malaysia Airline, around 2003, flight from Stockholm - NYC… half way thru, when everyone was sleeping (night flight), trhe plane was shaking, roller coaster rides (dropping 1-2000ft each time) for almost an hour..i was about to sleep, and in my mind was that we’re gonna crash at some point… i quickly set my seat from bed to sitting position and tightens my seatbelt… that was the scariest flight i ever flown in my life….😰😨… i cant imagined SIA dropped 6000ft into an air pocket…that is scary !!!!!

That stat is misleading....5 minutes is a long time in flight time and 6000ft isn't that much. Think about it. A plane rising to 20.0000 feet after take off within 2-3 minutes. That is normal descent speed.

When flying over Bay of Bengal …. I always Seat belt on all the way ….. turbulence in that area famous .

I was supposed to be onboard on this flight SQ321 back to Singapore but rescheduled to 22nd (same flight SQ321 ) instead because I’ve met an old friend and decided to extend for another day so that we could meet up for dinner, otherwise I could be one of the injured person. My condolences to the family of the deceased and at this difficult moment my thoughts are with them wholeheartedly & wishes those onboard who are injured a speedy recovery.

This sea region where it happened is like a Bermuda Triangle…turbulences regularly happens when flying through that area

So sad, my Mum takes this exact flight when she comes to KL to visit, that poor man was probably doing the same, heading to visit family with his wife, I can't imagine what she must be going through and the family. My thoughts are with them all and everyone affected, the skies are getting rougher, I've done been over this airspace quite a bit of late, and it always gets bad over the Bay of Bengal, guaranteed. Flying to BKK tomorrow and I must say, not looking forward to it. Absolutely heartbreaking 😢

Do not compromise safety when taking flight. As long as ur not going to toilet keep ur seatbelt on. Alot of pax dont care about this, tinkering their belongings, standing on the aisle , going to toilet frequently etc.
*Over 30 passengers injured is huge number and thats why seat belt is highly necessary during turbulence so need to find out hows the crew onboard adhere to this protocols during the incident*
Many of us fly SIA before. I am confident the crews did what they could to make sure passengers have their seat belts on. But they can't really force people without authority.
True, fasten seat belts at all times. But as the Clear Air Turbulence happened during lunch time when everybody is either eating, finishing lunch or going to the toilet, there is nothing to prevent them to cause injuries. By chance those seated with seats belts managed to escape and sustain less injuries than the rest... No fault of their own
Most times people ignore the crew when they tell them to put their belt on when seated I have seen people do that a lot of times in light turbulence, but this one was severe

Any flight crew never fail to warn about the known turbulance. As a passenger, I remain seated with buckle up all the time except using the lavatory.

It appears we know little in the ambundance of wide and varied Air turbulences.
We cannot therefore detect,prevent and act against them
Upper altitude winds at the time of the incident were light, less than 30 knots, with no jet stream in the area. The likely cause was an encounter with a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are common and were present in the area at the time of the incident. The flight can go from smooth to severe turbulence in an instant as the aircraft enters an isolated cumulonimbus. Onboard weather radar can display moisture in thunderstorms but occasionally it won’t display the upper parts of the storm where strong vertical winds are present without moisture.

If it's thunderstorm, either the weather forecast on route would have indicted or the weather radar on board would have shown.
The onboard radar don't just "see" a slice of what is ahead but a column of it, not to mention that the pilots can point it up or down to "see" more of it. With the colours, you kind of "cannot" miss it.
If the plane gets into the "upper parts of the storm", they would be in a sudden climb with the air coming up from below, instead of descending. Hot air rises and that is 1 of the 3 ingredients required for thunderstorm. The upper parts of the thunderstorm would likely contain more moisture as well, thus making it clearer for the radar, something like anvil cloud. Due to the temperature, the upper part of the cloud starts to spread.
@@user-yb1wt2mq8c Most of what you stated is correct. There were active SIGMETS for convective thunderstorms in that area at the time of the incident. There were no active SIGMETS for severe turbulence at the time of the incident. I fly Pacific routes regularly between Hawaii and Australia and occasionally in South East Asia. As a general rule you don’t encounter clear air turbulence in the equatorial regions, strong jet streams don’t exist there. Bottom line…on board weather radar is not perfect. We rely not only on the aircraft’s weather radar but on other sources of information including PIREPS ( weather reports from other pilots ), visual clues ( simply looking out the windshield ) or SIGMETS ( official weather warnings about inflight hazards ). Because there was a death and serious injuries this will be classified as an accident. I will be looking forward to the cause and contributing factors in the final report.
So why does this not happen more often ?
SIngarpore airlines top of the line qualty accross the board there some things that are simply unavoidable.
Thankfully most passengers are physically ok but feeling traumatised. Hope they will feel better soon. Condolences to the family of the gentleman who died. Wishing speedy recovery to those injured.

I hate it that people got hurt and one person was killed, but every passenger should be mandated to wear seatbelt during the flight, except to go to the restroom.
For long haul flights, it's good to take a little walk to stretch the legs as well. Turbulence don't happen 100% of the time and don't happen in the whole flight, so best advice would still be to have the seat belts ON when seated even if the seat belts lights are off. Go to the toilet, take a short walk, etc as necessary, when seated, seat belts on.
Had similar incidents happened in China 🇨🇳, no news!

That part of Andaman Sea @ parallel to Phuket & Langkawi is a hotspot for air turbulence especially for bigger aircraft, depending on the weather. Frequent flyers, experience pilot and cabin crew knows it. As precaution, better to fasten your seatbelt when flying over this area. It can happen anytime, to any aircraft.

7000 ft in 6 minutes is not a sudden drop. It appears to be a controlled descent of some nature, by the pilot or autopilot. Was there a loss of instrumentation being Boeing, since feed back is that the aircraft nosed up and down. Or did the pilots doze off and autopilot did the correction? Or did the pilots react with delay? Could be loss of instrumentation, 6 minutes is a long time!!! Plus food service was in progress.
well. it's was not clear air turbulence. Radar did show extreme weather at the time, but the pilots did not deviate their course, nor did they slow the airplane appropriately.

CAT Clear Air Turbulence Finally an expert it talking sense, at that FL there is no moisture, so no radar returns. The only possible warning is a sudden increase or drop in OAT Outside Air Temperature. FL = flight level = altitude above mean sea level. A global reference point all planes work to with high accuracy) In a seat? strap on....you are comfortable but your body is travelling at 300 Miles per hour!!!!
maybe add "FL, Flight Level" or use altitude/height instead since non aviation people might not understand what is flight level.

Unfortunately, I often can have a very good guesse after listening to welcoming announcements what our journey would like. I am sorry to say this, but some pilots from certain areas of the world fly much wilder than others

The use of cancer as an analogy for the clear air turbulence seems quite far fetched. Maybe less easily detectable natural disasters like earthquake, where severity and occurrence are unknown can be used instead to paint a better picture.
It's actually a little easier to detect earthquake, especially around those tectonic plates, "ring of fire", etc. Some have minor tremors in advance [sometimes weeks ahead] and seismic detectors in the area helps.

Not enough is understood about clear air turbulence, "CAT". Weather radar, including those onboard aircraft uses moisture to help with detection, which don't really help with CAT.
I want to know how high were they flying before they dropped to 6000 feat.
According to FR24 37000 feet, normal cruising altitude
I think the decline was by 6000ft not TO 6000 ft
