Gigabyte P55 Gaming Laptop overheats from smoking too many cigarettes

  • This Gigabyte P55 Gaming laptop that came in the shop the other day was overheating the second you turn it on. After replacing the thermal paste and cleaning the nicotine pillow from the vent, it was still overheating, just not as fast. I realized I forgot to replace the silicone thermal pads on the MOSFET's.
This is why I don't completely assemble a laptop before testing it!
Video ends before the thermal pad replacement because the shop got too busy to record the rest of the repair. But I need views before I can monetize my shorts so here you go!

For everyone that's saying I didn't clean the intake, pause the video on 0:18 , then pause it on 4:57 . That's what a cleaned intake with nicotine and tar residue looks like on a severely smoke damaged computer. Here's a small clip showing that laptop vent being cleaned ua-cam.com/video/IrSJ46-d7wQ/v-deo.html . There's a longer version somewhere but I'm too lazy to search for it, so just use your eyes.
Besides that, I should have used PTM instead of Thermal Grizzly. Regardless, the temps were fine and the customer was happy enough to leave a good review a few months after this.

As someone that smoked for over 25 years (but not anymore) and around computers since the beginning of the PC era, you need to understand why this is happening. The problem is not smoke per ce but rather tar. Tar creates a thin layer on electronics and metal and it makes the surface sticky and dusk can now stick to it creating layers of dust stuck on by layers of tar. On top of that the metal fins on radiators are now insulated to the air and traces on the motherboard stop being conductive. Even alcohol bathing cannot completely remove the tar from it. Imagine what it does to our lungs...

I bought an EVOO LP6 gaming laptop in 2019. I've only ever repasted it once. Ive upgraded ram, storage, wifi card, and always used a filtered cooling pad. This has been one of my all time best purchases. Runs DCS and Apex like a champ to this day. Gaming laptops can be really solid if you take care of them.

depends. if tar has stuck for years, just rinsing won't do much, you need to scrub it like there is no tomorrow and some tar will still stay. maybe an ultrasonic cleaner will do better job but i don't have one to test. or maybe some other chemical will do the job.

I inspected it and found the thermal paste was almost gone n its just metal on metal. I touched the surface and it was somehow wet. I figured i didnt dry the die and heatsink core area enough. So disassembled everything, cleaned and dried it. Now it is 10-15 celsius lower.

The VRAM have something similar to K5 Pro Thermal Paste. This is a thicker paste that manufacturer's use instead of pads. I always replace with whatever the manufacturer had.
