I sold my V60 and bought a V90 now with 30,000kms. Did the rear brakes and same procedure worked. ACC (cruise control) eats up rear brakes on newer Volvo’s. This trick will save you hundreds $$$ by doing it yourself.
2015 XC70. Your 9V battery trick ROCKS! Positive goes to the round end of the recepticle, neg. to the square end. Takes about 60 seconds to wind the piston all the way in. THANKS!
Thank you for this tip and video. I have just done the rear pads on my V70 only to find that a previous owner or garage had stripped one of the Torx bolts which hold the EPB motor in place so I couldn't remove it. This video was posted in the comments of the video I watched on how to wind the EPB back manually and while I didn't have a 9V battery to make it work, I did have a spare 12v leisure battery which worked perfectly in its place. This video should be considered gold to Volvo owners and in fact anyone who has the similar style of EPB
This is AMAZING! Thanks. 9 volt battery worked great and took all of 10 seconds. So glad I found this video and didn't disassemble the electric parking brake actuator like all the other videos tell you to do. Thanks again!
Thanks for this - I was about to throw in the towel when trying to figure out if I was going to do this job myself. Other videos mention computer, disassembly of the motor, etc. I followed yours and it worked perfectly! BTW, for anyone watching once you disconnect the motor you'll see two obvious legs to attach the battery to - it's not inserting into a black hole as it appeared here (that was just his camera perspective).
This video save my day🎉. Thank you so much. Just remind that dont forget to open the cap of brake fluid, then release the brake, otherwise piston cannot push back.
There are very few videos that show this 9V battery trick - brilliant! I was hesitant to disassemble the EPB motor, as it is sealed with a rubber ring gasket. If that is damaged or doesn't seal tight, the motor can be contaminated. With the 9V battery trick, retraction is simple, fast and assures that the motor's intact. Thank you!!!
The 9V battery did not work for me... used my lawnmower 12V battery and it worked! Need enough juice for the motor to turn on. Was glad it was not a burned out motor or something else. Brakes were SO easy once that motor is retracted. Thank you so much for the good advice.
Good video. I wasn't aware of the Electronic Parking Brake complication until I tried pushing back the caliper like I usually would and nothing happened! I found a power supply to an old toy that put out 7 volts and that also did the trick. FYI for other V60 owners. There is no wear indicator squeaker tab on your brake pads. And if you hear grinding, you're down to the metal and will need to change rotors as well. The inside pad seems to wear much faster than the outside pad and you can't visually inspect it very easily!
There is a systemic problem with the EPB -- some hold the pads tight so they wear out quicker (my daughter's 2014 S60) and some do not (my wife's 2014 XCX60). All I can say is, monitor your inside pads any way you can and can before they wear out and score the rotor! Or, in my daughter's case, we change every 40,000 miles or so.
Very helpful, thanks. Note that at least on some models you do NOT have to remove the entire caliper to replace the rotor. Just pull the two bolts holding the piston/pads and angle the rotor out.
Today, on my 2012 S60, passenger side EPB seized and won't release. Going to try this method tomorrow. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get my car mobile. You got a new subscriber, as this is one of the best videos for this I've seen. Not to even mention brilliant 9V idea.
I have a $5000 Snap-on scanner which has a computer based method of retracting the e-brake calipers. Your method is cheap, faster and foolproof. Thanks!
Ich habe die Bremsen an meinem V60 (Bj 2014) gewechselt und hab es mit dieser Methode probiert. Hat alles 1 A funktioniert.
It worked. Just wanted to add that the 9v battery positive (+) is on the side with two squared corners of the socket. Yu might need to use a C-clamp or a pusher to push the piston all the way in.
Well I tackled this job last night and the only snafu I ran into was a stuck wheel. I was rotating the tires at the same time and one of the front wheels was just stuck to the hub. Finally managed to free it and continue to the rear brake job. The brakes were very straight forward and the 9v battery trick worked like a charm!!!!! Thanks for showing this trick. Saved myself a small fortune by doing it on my own.
Thanks for the video. I will try this. I had my epb always retracting and does not engage. If I remove the epb motor and rotate the piston shaft, there was always 1 full turn to engage the rear brake. I will try to retract the piston all the way in the caliper this time.
Thanks so much - this worked perfectly on my 2015 Volvo XC70. I actually couldn't get enough power from a 9V battery. I used an old 12V, 1 amp power supply (old tablet charger). Once I ran the electric parking brake back all the way the piston pushed back very easily, just a little pressure from a C-clamp.

Oh I have been putting anti seize on the bolts for decades and using a torque wrench with no issues. the other method is the manual turning of the piston with an allen key or torex key. Take out the two bolts holding the cap on then remove the cap and TURN the piston Clock Wise with the allen key. Then again push the piston back in with a brake tool or pliers.
You may not know this, and/or may not even see this, but what's your thoughts on one of the epb retracting with a 9v and then the other not. I ended up having to use a 12v battery on one side. I'm wondering if that would be a tell tale sign that it's going bad.
great job. I wonder if the reason we are getting so many canadian volvo experts on YT is because everything is overpriced in Canada and we are forced to work on our (also overpriced) vehicles or go bankrupt due to the cost of service. ThroughtS?
Just did this on my 2011 XC70.. all went well until I got it all done and then got a 'Electronic Park Brake Service Required'. Only passenger side is working (can tell from listening whilst partner turns on and off)... Is there some way of forcing a recalibration? Should I clear the code using ODB Bluetooth and then disconnect epb once again, and wind it back to fully open and then try and calibrate again?
That’s never happened to me. I would try to clear the code and do it again. Try disconnecting the battery before you wind them back. However, due to the age of the car, if they are the original calipers, maybe there is some binding going on. Sliders well lubed? Check that the mechanical aspect is functioning perfectly. That could be the source of what you’ve experienced.
So I didn’t see this until after I had my brakes changed at a brake shop. They didn’t use the scan tool or battery tool. Is it too late to remove everything and use the battery trick?
I recommend the way. I did exactly the same in my s80 2010. There is only one detail. An error in the electric brake motors will appear in the computer. You can see the error only by connecting a computer
XC60 here - no error detected by the computer. I did play around with the parking brake though when first turning on (as displayed in the video) so maybe that pre-empted the computer's complaint.
Disconnected negative terminal. But if your car is off, there is no power going to that motor. It won’t mess anything up if you complete the repair and plug it back in before you turn the ignition on again to cycle the parking brake.
No. Once the connector is unplugged, it is disconnected from the vehicle’s electrical circuit. The 9v then connects to the caliper motor (not vehicle wiring)
What is the actual reason for why this fault happens? My rear is stuck on and don't want to be jacking the car up and doing this everytime.....so is it a recurring fault or what???
It doesn’t matter whether the car is in N or P. Just be safe and make sure the wheels that are touching the ground are blocked so the car doesn’t roll and fall on you.

I read that disconnecting the epb plug can cause the system to throw fault codes and lose it's air gap calibration. Has anyone had such issues after using this trick?
I’ve done it a few times and never experienced any issue. However, disconnecting the negative battery terminal before the job would add extra insurance if you’re worried about it.

Why not just release epb and then take positive from ur car battery and it will be released then just push piston?
thanks for the clip.

I would think so, if it has 2 connectors. If it’s more complicated with a 3rd or 4th wire, I wouldn’t do it.

So I didn’t see this until after I had my brakes changed at a brake shop. They didn’t use the scan tool or battery tool. Is it too late to remove everything and use the battery trick?
The battery trick is to retract the caliper piston to make room for the new brake pads. If you had your brakes changed, you should be all set.
after you retracted the piston, did you have to do it again or just pump the brakes to seat them?
Once retracted, it’s done. The parking brake used daily will automatically adjust as the pads wear.

hello, sorry but the motor attachment has 3 pins, on which of these you have to attach the battery. Thanks
Aurelio Chelu make sure you’re at the EPB motor and not the abs sensor. EPB motor only has two wires that I’ve ever seen.
@@prannermedia842 Ok. Thanks
I spose you could use an old cigarette lighter plug plugged in to the socket with a length of wire.
Then ignition would have to be on. That could pose a safety hazard. I would not recommend this, but it is a valid concept.
The car computer will think the EPB is still at the last position, will cause error and possible malfunction.
