I just picked up an Acer Nitro 5 with an i7-11800h and the RTX 3050ti for juuuust under $1k. Most of the reviews concentrate on the fact that the 3050ti only has 4gb of memory, but nobody (except @hubwood) mention the fact that being able to run DLSS makes up for that shortcoming. I am running COD MW and Warzone at well over 110-120 FPS with DLSS on and high settings. While I monitor performance, I see that with DLSS, a lot of the workload is offloaded to the CPU, and with 8 cores 16 threads @ 4.60ghz, you wouldn't know your GPU is only 4gb. In turn, I am running Witcher 3 (a non DLSS game) at over 75 FPS on ultra and over 100 FPS on high. This little Nitro5 was purpose built with DLSS in mind for budget buyers. I can see the 3050ti being a problem with a low end 4 core CPU with low clock speed. But if paired with a beefy CPU to take up the slack via DLSS (such as my Nitro5), players will be thoroughly satisfied.

I just got a Zephyrus G14 for Black Friday with a 60W 3050. I have a giant backlog of games in my Steam and Epic library, I think the 3050 will be more than enough for me for some time. And for the future there will be DLSS to cover other wants and needs when it comes to gaming.
Offcourse I could have gotten a 3060 laptop for the same price, but I think a laptop is more than a GPU. Build quality, screen, ease of use, portability are all a factor in how usefull a laptop is for a user. You have to figure out where your needs lie and what specifically appeals to you.

I tested several power options, you have a lot of variety how you want to manage your system, I suggest looking into disabling Turbo on the processor it will enable the GPU to boost up to 75 watt in gaming giving a good 10-20% increase in fps in some games, with lower temps on the CPU. I ve been having a blast benchmarking and tweaking this laptop, it´s really a treat for everyone who is enthusiastic about tech.

I bought an Acer laptop with RTX 3050 Ti 2 months ago and so far it's been great. There's a lot of bashing towards this particular GPU, but I can't really see why. The 4 gigs of Vram don't seem to be an issue as I can easily run most games at 1080p/High settings with excellent frame rates.

    • @s2korpionic
      @s2korpionic 2 роки тому +16

It's the typical internet bandwagon. Some people can't comprehend gaming at high or medium settings (over ultra settings), so they balk at the idea of 4 GB vram being justified.

Hello! My legion 5 pro arrived recently and I've tested running games at 4k/120hz on our lg oled. The performance was really impressive. Sleeping dogs was running at 90-105 fps with AA turned off and mostly ultra settings. But I've noticed that the GPU temps reached 80°C and were between 73-80°C most of the time (the nvidia overlay showed that idk how accurate that is) and I haven't noticed any major hits in performance everything was smooth. I'm really worried if my laptop has taken some damage. I want to know your opinion on this.
Edit: specs, 5800h and rtx 3070.

    • @Hubwood

Good video, with some good solid points, and a practical mindset.
I've just been on the hunt for a cheap-midrange gaming and content-creation laptop, and I think my discoveries may actually be of help to people on a similar hunt. Quick disclosure I ended up with a locally discounted Lenovo Legion 5 5600H/3060, just under 800€ with a 25% VAT included.
HP doesn't seem to disclose how many watts they feed the GPUs, at all. Can't find it. Though I would strongly urge people to avoid HP laptops anyways, since I'm yet to experience the ball bearings in their cooling surviving the end of warranty. It's like the car where the engine explodes the day after the warranty runs out. I have a lot of people bringing me their computers for fixing - it's ALWAYS the ball bearings in HPs, and subsequent overheating.
MSI, atleast in the budget-mid range, are quite heavy handed with limiting both CPU and GPU wattage. I don't know about the their premium solutions, but in my price range not a single MSI laptop gave more than roughly half the possible max watts, to the components. And more often than not, they were slammed right to minimum watts.
Unlike HP, they do actually show this in the specs, so can hardly fault them. But buying a MSI laptop with (for instance) a RTX3060, expecting it to perform like, say a Lenovo Legion with the same, is setting yourself up for disappointment. From what several reviewers have stated, apparently their cooling just isn't up to the task, so they limit the performance to compensate.
I was looking a lot at the Asus TUF line. Almost went with a F15 FX506 with 11400H/3050 (160€ less than the Lenovo). They are feeding their CPUs full watts, but GPUs in most cases were getting just over half the possible - the one I almost bought was getting 60 watts from the 35-80 watt range.
From what I could find, their cooling is well up to the task, and performance seems above average relative to the specs. Overall they came across as having the edge on MSI, both on CPU watts and a number of secondary details.
However, a word of caution, which may or may not still be relevant. In the past, I've had serious trouble with Asus hardware having a very short period of driver support, and being locked to proprietary drivers, thus unable to run with for instance Intels own driver to the chipset, which was still being updated. As such it's been a long time since I dared buy Asus, so no idea if it's still an issue.
So far very happy with my Lenovo.

In my country, I found that ROG Flow x16 with 3050Ti and 3060 has around $190 difference in price. Both has 100W TDP with 2560x1600 display . I have used both laptops and built some PCs in my life. I'm 30 years old, I've been building PCs since 15 years old. I owned 4 laptops. One of them was a Asus rog strix lately. Here is my opinion:
Laptops only advantage that it's portable. Disadvantage that you get a mobile cpu and gpu. CPUs are always very bad in laptops in terms of performance(bottleneck) to the GPU. But a mobile GPU is way worse as well in a laptop. I saw people playing with 110-140 fps on a rtx 3060 laptop with Valorant on low settings 1080p. That is crazy. So bad performance. I got the same fps with my 7300hq 1060 6gb asus rog strix laptop.
PCs are going to be more powerful and for the same price of a laptop, you can buy a much better PC. Also there are tons of software issues with laptops. If you buy an asus rog strix, don't forget to copy/paste all the official drivers on the storage. For me, they did not state that. Yeah sure you can download softwares from asus website. But the problem was, there was softwares which you can't find them there and they are not going to give it to you unless you pay up. After a reinstall of Windows, I lost my ability to use my laptop since there was a missing driver to use my 1060 6gb on overboost (bummer). Laptops are generally running very very hot. Imagine that without my fans overboost on my gpu. Easy 90-95 celsius. (Yes I repasted it, I also repasted my laptop every 6 months). How I know this for certain? Many people claiming this on forums. After reinstall of Windows they lost the ability to overboost unless you saved those drivers BUT here is the cherry on top. Asus don't state this anywhere in the manual or anywhere else. So you end up with a thermal throttled unusable laptop unless you pay your extra 150-200 price which I mentioned before. I sold my laptop and I swore that I will never, ever use one my in my life.

The cpus in both laptops are pretty similar and won't make a difference.
I would probably go for the 3050 as it's newer, and offers dlss in many games. It will be slower in a handful of games that need more than the 4gb vram though. Which would be fixable by lowering the graphic settings.
